We regret to learn that the Rev. J. W. Gidfrey has been compelled to give up work for a time owing to ill health brought on from over work. Mr. Godfrey is one of the curates at the principal ¢burch in Sterling, Scotland, which is the centre of many spiritual agencies. At Christmas Mr.Godfrey was takepseriously i} and confined to bed for rix weeks. When he became strong e.ovgh te go about he was ord-red to the South of France. On his way his companion, ® young gentlemen who eccompanied him, was taken ill at Paris with scarlet fever when Mr. Godfrey.

SOUSA AND His FAN}.

The concert in the Fxhibition building last evening by Sousa and his band attract- ed about twelve hand» d people to tha! elace. That is abont this number a‘ttend- ed the concert. The crowd which lined the road adjoining the building must have numbered several hundred more. ‘The greater portion of those present were of course from Charlottetown, but tue at- tendance from other sections of tie pro- vince was very good indeed, They came by train, carriage and wheel, and all were delighted with what they saw and heard

Mr. Sousa played an excellent pro- gramme. In the yarious numbers the time was splendid and the instrumentation al! that the mo-t captions criuc would desire. Indeed the whole band seemed: like one vase. meehne guided by the leader’s baton. Every number was rapturousty encored, in some instances two and three times. Sousa was very kind in permitting encores,and generally'p'ayed some fam liar air. Severalof the selections rendered were compositions of the great leader himself. Perhaps the most taking of these was the grand religious fantasia, “Songs of Graceand Glory,” which included the familiar aire Rock of Ages and Nearer My God to Tnee. Indeed inany of the, audience speak of this asthe gem ef the evening. The closing selection by the band wae a potpourri of English, Scotch and Trish are, ending with the Natioual Autheon.

Scu-a is certainly a great leader, and his band is worthy of him. His soloists, to, are good. The soprano, Mrs. Northrop, bas a@ voice of uncommon beauty and purity, and an appearance that is capti- vating. Her rendition of “Se Saran Rose’ last evening was excellent, and in response to a rapturoua encore she rendered “Comin’ Thro’ the Eye” mort charmingly. Miss Martina Johnston, the violin soloi-t, in her selection gave the most unbounded satisfaction. Her tone was sweet and true throughout, and ehe well cezerved the heariy recall. Herr Franz Hell played one

of Nessler’s compositions on the flagel- horn, and played i with a taste and ex- | pres-ion that called forth the applause of his delighted auditors. Heal-o had to respond to an encore. Mr, Arthur Pryor, the trombone soloist, also played . exquis- itely, and was encored.

During the evening Mr. Pyke, who is managing Sousa’s provincial tour, directed the baud whilst hie Jubilee ode was rev- dered. This composition of Mr. Pyke’s is # gem in its way, and was excellent:y rendered by the band. Mr. Pyke, it may be stated, is a Haligonian, and a clever one at that. A copy ef his com- position has been forwarded to Her Majesty the Queen through Sir Charles Tupper.

The iwo hours occupied in the rendition of the programme passed all too quickly. The gentleman who brought Sousa and hie band 10 Charlottetown deserves the thanks of every Jover of music for affurd- ing ail a chance to hear one of the finest aggregations of the kind befure the people tuday. Itisa pity, however, that our people did pot appreciate the enterprise in, a more substantial manner. There were many vacant chairs, aod from a fioancial standpoint the project must have been « faiiure. ,
