5-3 In Semi-Finals Opener At Forum Last Night

Lead by the abarpshooting line of Bernard, Rodgers and Mahar. who accounted for four of the teams five goals, Saints outshot the Abbles 2-1 in the opening frame, broke even with one each in the second seuion and repeat- ed their first period performance in the closing frame for their two goal edge victory.

Playing really close hockey right fiom the opening of the first period. both teams came up with fast breaking attacks in the early part of the frame, but both goalies. Strain of Saints and Hooper of Abbies ame up with some smart saves to keep the scoring in check for the first eight minutes of play. Saints broke into the scoring at 8.06 when Bernard, Mahar and Rodgers teamed up on a slick passing attack from centre ice with the former doing the scoring hon- era. and it was not until the 14.54 mark that Perry got the equalizer for Abbies. Perry banged home a hard shot f.rom right in front of the net on Ralph Sheppard's pass from a faceoff to the left of the Saint: net. Saints took the lead again in the closing minutes of rte game when Rodgers set Mahar up on a smart two man attack from just outside the blueline in and end the scoring for the frame.

Playing fast breaking hockey again on very even terms with- out any further scoring past the midway mark in the second frame, Perry again came through to dead- lodc the score at 13.56 when he potted Stanley’: pass from a pres- sure attack around the net. But again the Saints came roaring back in the dying minute: of the period to go out in front again when Jerry McQuaid dented the twine: a-t 18.35 on a very neat passing play with Desltoslera and Dlcisaac around the net.

The big break came for Saints In the opening seconds 01 the third period while Abbles were short a man on a carryover penalty to Stewart who was banished for holding in the last minute at play in the second period. Jumping to the attack right from the faceoff, the Saints came up with two whirl- wind pauing attacks that netted them two goals in the first 29 leconds of play,‘co:ning seven seconds apart. Bernard got the first on a smart three man play from around centre ice. while Rodgers netted the other on a two- Ina nat/tack with Bernard that came right from the faceotf in on goal. Making the going really tough for Aibbtles, trailing 5-2, Saints con- tinued to press the attack up to its halfway mark before the Ab- hles pepped up again to start forcing .the issue into the saints’ and of the rink with Perry com- |_ng through with his third and final. goal of the game at 12.58. The Summerslde Crystals and O'Leary Maroon: fought to a 10- all draw in Crystal rink last night in fll exhibition tilt. Down 9 to 3 at the end of the second period. the visitors roared back with seven goal: in the final frame to knot the contest and skate off the ice with a well-earned draw. Flyers sure wrapped up their semi-final hoop playoffs in no un- certain terms against Charlotte- town Army cagcmen here on Sat- urday night when they walloped the locals by a 75-30 count to take the home'ahd home, total point series by a 130-51 margin and earn their way into the Island Physical Fitness Championship Basketball finals against Ray‘: Millionaires. They took the series opener over from Army 55-12 at the Summerside Station the previ- ous week.

The Flyers will'now meet the Ray‘: hoop aggregation, who elim- inated Saint Dunstan’: University hoopsters in their semi-final series. in-a best of three game series for the Island Basketball title. As the winners of the regular sche- dule, R.C.A.l‘. have the choice of the site for the opening game, and it is expected that the flrst game will be played this week at Summerslde on either Thursday or Friday night, although no de- finite date has been announced yet. If this be the case however. the second game will be played at the P.W.C. auditorium on Wed- nesday night of next week. if a third game is necessary to decide the cl‘ mpicnship, a coin will be tossed to decide which team gets the odd home ‘game;

As it regards the series itself, the competition should be of the keenest nature. as both squads have been playing really close bali all season and are right at the peak of their playing form. Although the R.C.A.F. team are looked upon as the favourites to take the series. it is by no means a cut and dried situation. as the Moneymen sport plenty of punch and power on their roster, and have the habit of coming through with powerful performances when least expected. such as in the case of their scmi-final series with Saints. In that particular in- stance, they went into the final game of the total point series trail- ing the SainLs by a five point mar- gin as the result of their 48-41 loss in the opening tilt, but when the smoke of battle had cleared. Ray's were sporting a 49-40 vic- tory to take the series by a four point edge.

They will be meeting the stiff- est opposition _thcy have encount- ered this season however, when they stack up against the Airmen, who are a really solid. smart passing band of cagcmen, but despite what the final outcome will be, hoop fans at both Charlottetown and Summerslde can plan on seeing some really top-notch competition before the series. is‘ decided.

Turning to sporting competition outside the Province. that doesn't lurk color for Island fans due to the number of fonner island ath- letes taking part, it looks very much like it is going to be the Halifax Saint Mary's hockeyists that will be the team to meet the Cape Breton winners for the Maritime Senior Hockey title.
