Svecessrut Fisnermen.—The people of | Shelburne CountyyNova Scotia, should | be an exceptionally happy lot. It is | estimated thatthe catch of herring in the county this fall bas been between 30,000 and 40,000 barrels. About seventy five per cent of the catch has been sold at prices ranging from $3.40 to $3.25 per barrel. The balance of the fish have been kept for lobeter bait. It will be seen that the big run means a big pile of money in the pockets ot fishermen. At North East Harbor alone it is said the catch was over 8000 barrels.
Cuitp Cookin to Deatu.—There was a shocking accident at Montague, near Dartmouth, Saturday morning, which re - sulted in the ‘leath of a young child of Daniel Edwards of that place. The cradle in which the child was sleeping had been placed too near a stove on which was a large pot of builing water. In re- moving tbe pot from the stove it slipped and upset, spilling the boiling water over the child. When its clothes was removed ite skin came with them and its agony was terrible. It tingered through the day and died towards evening.

He Was Well Thought of and Respected by All Who Knew Him.
Mr. Silas Barnard died of old age at tie of his son, Mr. J. S. Barnard, at Merriam Junction, Wednesday, December Ist, soon after noon, eged 81 years, 3 months and | dav. He bad been gradual. ly failing during the past summer, but his last illness was only of about five weeks’
| duration, the last two weeks of which be
was confined to bis bed. The funeral uok place from the house at 1.30 o clock the following Sunday, and was largely at
tended. Past Grand Ma-ter H. R. Denny, of St. Paul, assisted by the members of
Carver Lodge No. lll, A. F. @A. M., conducted the beautiful and imposing burial service of the Masovic fraternity at the _— grave.
The remains were laid tenderly to rest in the Carver cemeiery at a beautiful spot ove:looking the valley of the Minuesota river chosen by himself as his last resting place.
The deceased was born in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island,and when a young man he learned the carpenter business with his father. In 1837 he went to New Bed- ford, Mass., and embarked in the whaling business, After remaining in it for several years, he returned to the Isiand and fol- lowed the business of centracting and building on his own account. For several years he was superintendent of public works of that province. In 1865 he immigrated to Minnesota and settled in Mankato where he continued business as a con- tractor and builder. In 1875 he removed to Waseca where he lived about two years, after which he went to California. Subsequently he spent four years with his eon, Henry, iu Central America. In October ] 892 he came to Merriam Junction t> make his home with his son, Mr. J. S. Barnard, with whom be lived until be died.{ In early years he was &@ prominent andj active member of the Masonic fraternity being a past master of St. John’s Lodge.,! .*.P. The following relatives from Minne- apolis were in attendance at the fun-ra’: His youngest brother Mr. John F. Barnard, his nephews Frederick, Harry and Arthur Barnard, and his daughter, Mre. Anoie K. Darby, of Owatonna. The deceased was a good citizen, a good neighbcrand a man who was well thonght of and respec'ed by his associates.—Peoples Press, Owaton na, Minn., Dec 10.
