As far as the Tunnel scheme is concern- ed, the Dominion Government has demon- strated to the satisfaction of every right- thinking person that they were perfectly gincere in the matter. But if the Grits would only reflect, they would surely blush at the very meniion of the word “Tuanel,”

In the first place, Mr. Davies. tried to put a damper on it by ridiculing the scheme on the floor of the House of Com- mons.

“What was his object in doing so?” some measks, In our opinion—and every man is entitled to his opinion—-he was actuated by selfish motives. He was well aware that, should the tunnel be constructed, the intelligent electors of this Province would naturally support the party conferring such a boon upon them. In that case our moderna Demosthenes would be deprived of the long cherished hope of attaining to a seat in the Canadian Cabinet.

The brilliant light of that guiding star which inspired him on many a_ public platform and illuminated his pathway while humbly pursuing his way in the “cold shades of opposition” would be ex- tinguished forever. Again, when the vet- eran champion of the tunnel question—our present Lieutenant-Governor—patriotically resigned his seat in the Senate to contest Prince County for the House of Commons in order that he might. be in a better posi- tion to forward his favorite project, instea of electing him by acclamation, as should certainly have been done, all the Grit for- ces were raised to oppose him, an { unfor tunately for the Province he was defeate l.

Sir,—The correspondence and talk re- garding the split in the grit camp and the scalping of the Hon. David Laird by the grand sachem and chiefs of the grit party, is all very interesting from a social point of view; but from a political standpoint I think there is too much notice taken of it. The Hon. David Laird and friends will all fall into line and support Mr. Davies and his chiefs when the time comes, and Mr. Davies and his friends know this and are not in the least disturbed over Mr. Laird’s kicking. A real grit isa grit wherever you

find him. He is not accustomed to think for himself, buat is content to do his master’s bidding, and there is

no fear of any one of them being out of line when the day of election comes. The convention next Monday will nominate Mr. Davies, and he will accept it, and make a speech in which he will tell the faithful that there is no row, and never was, and the Patriot will publish this, and every Grit that reads it will believe it, and put the whole thing down to a Tory lie. They are used to being deceived, and don’t mind it in the least. They have had so much deception practised on them that they can easily stand it once more. Free Taixxer.

TERRIBLE FAMILY TRAGEDY.

A Brother Kills His Sister While Quarrelling.

Monrreat, March 6.

Yesterday morning the police discovered another frightful tragedy that had taken place at Outremout, four miles from this city. A young man named David Edwards, aged 25 years, who has been of unsound mind for years past, had a dispute with his sister Annie, aged 16, and seizing @ hatomer felled her tothe ground. Her skull was broken and she had only time to cry out “I am killed,” and expired.
