Former leader In Fox industry Dies Al S'side

The sudden death occurred at his home on the Pope Road, summar- side on Wednesday evening of Mr. B. I. Rayner at the age of years. Although in failing health for some time. Mr. Rayner had been feeling fairly good all Wednesday afternoon until about eight o'clock when he retired saying that he felt very tired. He passed away quietlyyabout half past eight.

He was born at Greenmount, P. E. 1., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Silas Rayner of that place. During the years when the fox industry was booming in this Province he was one of the most prominent men in the business and he carried on extensive trading operations in all its phases. Dur- ing the early days he conducted his fox business at Alberton and later he moved to Summerside where he formed a fox company of which he was named president.

Several years ago he retired from active work and since lived at Pope Road where his death oc- curred on Wednesday.

He is survived by his wife and four sons and four do htts. The sons are Silas, Ralph and William in Alberton and B. I. Jr. in ySum- merside. The daughters are, Ethel, Mrs. James tGetson, Coleman: Emily, Mrs, Stanley Arthur, Alber- ton: Mary. Mrs. Cari Ychnke. Selma, N.S.; Lena. Mrs. Emmersen Phillips. Truru. N.S.

Three sisters and one brother also survlvc. They are. Emily. Mrs Ponicry, Worcester, Mass; Irene, Mrs. Herbert Flatts, Charlottetown: Amanda, Mrs. Alge Wells. Sum- merside, and E. H. Rayner in Mon- treal.

Four Youiifiilient in Summerside Police Court

Four young men appeared in Summerside police court yester- day morning charged with theft; and were remanded till Saturday, They had been arrested on Wed les- dny night after the discovery of a cariio of stolen merchandise to the rear of the P. E. I, Bag Co. Ltd, on Water street

The stage was most artistically decorated for the occasion and with splendid lighting effects presented a most charming pic- ture. Besides the graduates, seat- ed on the stage were the president of the board, Hon. Walter E. Darby, Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell, Hon. A, W. Maiheson, Dr. John MacNeill. Mayor Henry W. Wedge, Rev. W. B. Crowe. the superintendent. Mrs. Boehner and Mrs. Heath Strong of the Ladies' Aid Society. '

Mr. Darby in his report on the activities of the hospital during the past year paid high tribute to the work of the past-president, the late H. T. Holman. who had filled the office of chairman of the board for so many years. To Mr. Holman he gave credit for much of his training in the diff'.- cult. duties connected with the of- free.

”Our hospital,” he said, "is par- ticularly fortunate in having pro- fessional men of the highest calibre serving on in staff. Our medical. surgical. x-ray. anaesthetic and pathological services would do credit to any institution. The superintendent. teaching and nurs- ing staff have performed an ex- ceptionally fine job under congest- ed conditions. We appreciate the good work which they have done and take this opportunity to say so publicly." '

Mr. Darby outlined the enormous scope of work performed within the walls of the Prince County Hospital. a tremendous volume to be carried on in a small 15-hrd capacity hospital with only one operating and one delivery room.

He congratulated them on their prospects of serving the pub- lic in a new hospital with all its new and up-to-date equipment.

Very pleasing musical numbers were rendered by the Girls Chorus. a piano duet by Barbara Dalton and Ann Sutherland and a trio consisting of Mrs. Eric Sheen. Mrs. Clarence Mercer and Mrs. C. W. Kipfer. Mrs, Creelman MacArthur was accompanist.

Cape .Traverse Players Win Drama Festival

'tWhere The Fires Are Lighted." presented by the Y. P. U. of Cape Traverse and directed by David Murphy. won first place in the finals of the Prince County Drama Festival held in the High School auditorium at Summerside Tues- day evening.

Mr. A. K. Lord was adjudged the best actor of the evening with honors for the best female per- former going to Miss Iris Brennan for her part as Emma in the play "The Dummy". Mr. Lordfs per- formance was in the winning play.

There were three entries in the semi-finals. two presented by the Kinkora Sodaiity "Lonely Lady” and "The l)uiiimy".

Rev. J. S. Davies of Kensingion was the adjudicator of the plays and gave first place to the Cape Traverse entry with the Kinkora entry ”The Dummy" as runner- up. These two plays will there- fore go to Charlottetown for pre- sentation in the Provincial finals which are to be held in the Em- pire Theatre for three days, be- ginning on May 29th.

In summing up the evening's performances Rev. Mr. Davies said that three splendid plays had been given and all three were well chosen as drama festival material.

The first. "Lonely Lady", was in his opinion an excellent play. well chosen. but too heavy for the young cast which presented it.

”If you have young people in a group." he said. "then a young peoples play should be chosen as a vehicle for their efforts." In the present play he felt that the cast had got in a bit deep. for the play demanded intense dramatic action and it was perhaps some- what beyond the capabilities of the performers.

The winning play. in the adjudi- cator's opinion, was carried to success by the excellent portrayals of the two elder people. -The younger people in the cast did not seem to sense the importance of the scene. they were too casual. Rev. Mr. Davies gave very con- structive criticism on their fail- ure lo change their positions and pastures over long periods, I fault. which tended to lessen the pace of the drama. He mended high- ly the work of Mr. A. K. Lord as David, the father. whose perform- ance was. in his opinion, very nul-
