Freddie, despite efforts on the part of the mother and an older brother to save the child's life. a Mrs. Somers. had gone to I nt-si-by grocery store leaving her six-your-old son Garry in the house with his younger brother. It is reported that kindling near the kitchen range became ignited and the six year old boy seeing the room filled with smoke. broke the window of the living-room and attempted to remove his two year old brother. Unable to do this he raced to the grocery store for his mother.

The alarm was turned in by Major Stanley of the Salvation Army. He immediately took Garry to the City Hospital where he was treated for glass cuts to his hands.

Jan. 10th. Two important changes were made. both of them concerned with the type of payments described as supplementary beneilts. Until Jan- uary lothsuppicmentary benefits were.paid at. the rate of soar, of regular benefits. Under the recent amendments. on and after Jan. loth. supplementary benefits will be paid at the same rate as regular benefits. It is phaclzed that the increase applies only as of the ef- fectivc date. and not for any days previous to January loth. It is not retroactive. The second amendment has ref- erenceto increasing the number of days. for which those who qualify for supplementary benefits only. will be paid. jnmln Perry and his son Claude Perry, went out. of control on the Montrose bridge. knocked over a telephone pole on the east side of the bridge and crashed throughthe .steel railings on the other side and came to rest. on its side near the center of the river in from four to five feet of water.

Fortunately for the occupants the truck, which was impaled on one of the two and a half inch railings. landed with the front wheels partly beneath the bridge and Mr. Rayner. who was en route from Halifax. was Able to jump on to the vehicle and kick out the driver's window and assist the trapped men to safety.

Keeping their hands above water with difficulty the occupants were uable to get the jammed door oi the truck open and were attempt- ing to kick out the window without success when their rescuer arrived. Although wet and cold the acci- dent victims were nono the worse for their experience. Attempts were being made yesterday to sal- vage the wrecked truck.
