A survey of the world movement for the past 20 years would make not only interesting but very en- couraging leading.

In Japan under an abstaining emperor the movement has been constantly gathering momentum. From 1922 to 1931 the population increased by 15 per cent but the production of liquor decreased by 29 per cent and consumption by 39 per cent 118 villages are completely dry. There are 00 temperance or- ganizations in Japanese Universi- ties. Baron Wakatsuki, the premier says Prohibition will revive the nation.

In Russia the government looks upon beverage alcohol as an enemy of the nation. It has the most scien- tific plan of ‘dealing with the prob- lem. The young people are taught not to drink, millions are pleged not to smoke or drink. It is a social shame to come under the influence of drink. Through the press, the picture shows, the schools, and by every possible advertising medium Russia is endesvoring to produce a nation free from Drink. It is a question whether a lot of propa- ganda against Russia. is not pro- moted by the Liquor Interests.

During the Spring of 1934 a great conference was held in Paris. France, under the patronage of’ the president oi the Republic. Twenty- two governments were officially represented. In Germany millions 0i’ the youth are pledged not to drink. Hitler is a declared enemy oi beverage alco- hol, and the drink bill, through education and economic pressure had been rapidly falling. For ex-_- ample, the output oi the Berlin breweries in 1930-31 was 134,000,003 gals: 1931-32, 84,000,000 gals. In 1932-33, 76,000,000 gals, a reduction of 58,000,000 gallons in 3 years in an ever increasing population.

In ustria, during the 5 years precee ing 1934, the consumption of beer declined from '18 litres per head to 34, and of spirits from 2 tol. In pure alcohol from 6.1 litres per head in 1939 to 3.8 in 1934.

In Great Britain the drink bill 10 years ago was £315,00o.00). Last year it had dropped to 92241300000. The drink bill oi Northern Ireland in 10 years dropped from £7,001,000 annually to £3,000,000.

In Canada, possibly for economic reasons, during the past four years, sale and consumption of liquor rapidly clecerased. '

In British Columbia the drink bill in 11929-30 was $19,533,617; 1930- 31, $17,754,055; 1931-32, $15,364,055; 1932-33, $11,537,489. We were mov- ing even under Government Control along with the World movement in the direction of decreased sale and consumption. -

Then something happened. The world witnessed one of the greatest high powered offensives in history. Money was lavishly spent to create in the public mind a new attitude toward drink. This was notoriously so in the United States. Prohibition was made the scape goat oi the world wide depression. The monied

A special study oi the drying and canning oi potatoes is to be made by the Commttee, a comprehensive study of which is being undertaken by the Fruit Products Research Committee oi the Central Experi- mental Farm.

A special bulletin on the Feeding Value oi Potatoes is to be prepared by the Committee, and a. study of the Economics of Potato Farming in New Brunswick is to be under- taken by Dr. J. F. Booth, Commissi- oner, Eoonomids Branch, Dominion Department of Akriculture, in c0- operation with the Provincial Gov- ernment and the Dominion Ex- perimental Famis officers in Ot- tawa and in Fredericton. If circum- stanim permit, the survey may be extended to other parts of the Maritirnes. At the same time, the information obtained in the Bt..lohn Valley would be applicable, in con- siderable measure, to the other potato growing sections of Nova Sootia and Prince Edward Island. The Committee is to inquire into the usefuliness of employing po- tatoes for ensilage. Dr. E. S. Archi- bald, Director, Dominion Experi- mental Farms, has arranged with Dr. E. S. Hopkns to include with the silage experiments this year the enslling of potatoes alone and mixed with other crops, and the Division of Animal Husbandry has been requested to keep closely in touch with these experiments and to observe, through actual feeding trials the results in compo/risen with cooked and raw potatom, which will be available to the PO- tato Research Committee.

POOR CANADA!

Canada is complaining of hard times, and why should not this country be short oi cash for necessi- ties? The liquor bill is enormous, the fee to get into the show is enormous, the'cost of crime with its tobacco-pampered jail inmates, is enormous.

On March 39, s. staff correspon- dent of leading papers informed the public that the consumption oi cigarettes during 1034, according to excise returns, was 4,822,400,065, an increase of approximately 13 pm‘ cent. over the consumption of i933. The number cf cigars consumed in 1934 amounted to 119,671,000 In increase oi nearly 5 per cent. over that of the previous year. . It is not to be wondered st when there are these increases in the consumption of cigarettes, cigen and smoking tobacco that there has been a decrease of $0.000 pounds in the use of chewing tobacco, but es it is. 4, 170.000‘ pounds was disposed of in this repulsive habit.

W. 0. Douglas, Manager oi Bird's Hill I'm Farm. Winnipeg. which is owned by the Hudsons Bay com- pany, paid us a brief visit, leaving on return Wednesday morning. He reports an average o1 four to the pair from his Silver Foxes, with good increases from mink and a litter from the fisher. The ranch is a very modern one, the pens are 8x24, partly covered but with sand and earth flooring. There being no lungwcrm 0r hookworm in Manitoba or the West it is not necessary-to use board floors.

How long thLs will keep up we wonder. The writer remembers on returning from the war there were no evidences of these diseases on Prince Edward Island and ranches such as Bovyers, Seal River, Gen- eral Fur Fanns and dozens oi‘ others visited, had splendid turn-outs of large. beautifully furred clear col- ored foxes the fall or 1919. As a matter of fact I have never seen better fox pups than that fall.

It was only s few years after that the ravages oi hookworm became noticeable and Dr. J. A. Allen was brought in and an experimental for station established. Then began the dosing with carbontetrachloride and later on tetrachlorethylene. These remedies although effective for hookworm were not of much account against lungworm and that disease gained headway with start- llns rapidity and would likely have meant the almost extinction of the fox industry here but for the 51-11- liant think-piece with which ma- m Humphrey of Kensington is equipped.

We believe that the honor oi in- venting the covered pen, with board 11001’. and use of sheds was first thought out by Mr. Humphrey. Others were quick to recognize the benefits of the new ideas and t0- day very few fox farmers in this Province raise pups on the ground.

The conditions which caused the change here will no doubt extend to the West in due time, as it is Just as reasonable for hookworm to gain a foothold in the West as it is in this very northerly clime which is so far from its natural habitat- the South.

The climate, however, seems to be unfavorable for the development 0f limzwonn: in fact foxes suffer- ing with mild degrees oi that trouble that have been exported to the West have recovered. In being free from such s. scourge the West has truly a very great advantage over the Maritime Provinces.

Then there is the cheap feed which is procured at such centre; as Winnipeg, Edmonton. Calgary and any of the larger Western cities. We went over feed prices for the val‘- ious meats, bread and other cereals, and Mr. Douglas's costs were less than half. Labor is also very plenti- ful and wages are not nearly as hish as paid by ranches in the vic- inity of Charlottetown and the hours of labor put in are mum longer.

We asked Mr. Douglas to what he ascribed his high average oi iour for every pair kept and he said he believed it was because he fed a great many rabbits. They could be purchased at a. cost of l 1-4 cent a pound. We mentionedthe possib- ility of disease from that’ source. "I took that up with Dr. J. A. Allen," he Said. “and he was positive that after the rabbits had been frozen for three days there was no danger Oi’ tuilerumla either for fox. or human. "I know dozens of ranchers that have fed big quantities of rab- bits and their men handled them freely without gloves and no fox or man suffered any ill effects."

Bird's Hill Ranch is famous for the quality of mink they are breed- ing there. The parent stock was obtained at the Hudson Bay Com- pany's posts in Labrador, trappFd by the Indians in the darkest woods of that region. Some of the best prices obtained for mink were the progeny of Bird's Hill stock, and lust falL every trio. and even extra, males. offered for sale, were quick-l 1y grabbed up. "Just before I came,‘ away," said Mr. Douglas. "we had a cable from Iceland asking for quotations on our mink."

Discussing the question of feed with Mr. Douglas, the writer found

Alternating with the ground feeds it is the usual policyto feed some chunks of melt or pieces of rabbit. The frozen rabbit with the skin of! is out into three parts. heads and shoulders will form one feed, the middle portion another feed and hind portion the third feed, and it is arranged so that all the foxes eventually get the whole portion of rabbit therefore receiving the bene- fit from all the glands.

Mr. Douglas's wealth of exper- ience us a representative or the Hudson's Bay Company made him an interesting talker and the writer without efiort on our part. travel- led through Quebec, Ontario and the West. It was interesting to get his description of Bill Ruthvens feed factory. Bill is the manager and chief owner 0i’ the Ruthven- Brett Fox Company, Alliston, On- tario. He mixes up the feed for nearly all the fox ranchers in his vicnlty. It is despatched on trucks in large, galvanized iron cans and all the rancher has to cio is to feed it according to instructions. Bill does the worrying as to the right formula and from what we can learn it is a splendid system for everybody and no one wants to change who has once tried it.

The O. W. Thompson ranches at Kitchener and vicinity where hund- reds of pairs are kept, prepare the feed in the same way at n. central “kitchen" and despatch it by trucks in oak barrels to their affil- iated ranches. who knows but that in a year or two the ranchers in and around Charlottetown and other parts of the Island will fol- low the same plan? All that is wanted ls a man of genius to put it into operation and ranchers with sufllcient confidence in him to sup- port the scheme.
