In his role as ”George." Peter Shams was commended on the picture he had drawn of the bit- terness and weakness of character. so necessary to this vital part of the story. "She opened the play brilliantly," was the way the ad- judicator started his comments on the role of ”Katc." played by Marjorie Ranahan, and he coupled this praise with compliments to the other two sisters. Jane and Baby, as played by Eva MacMillan and Blanche MacAleer.

Speaking of the performance by Derrlll Mac-Gulgan in the title role. Mr. Wetmore told this actor that thE genuine, mixed-up feeling of rebellion was there, and that he had given an alert pcrlormaiice.

Aurther MacLean turned in a very fine performance as the Chairman of the Rural District Council, making full use of effec- tive entrances and attack. Playing a very small role, Edith Pryce built the part of Delta into one which drew very high praise from Mr. Wetmore. Although her first appearance. in the first act. was of only half a minute duration. the audience found itself under- standing her perfectly, and waiting for her reappearance in the third act.

Two roles which had been changed slightly from the descrip- tions given by the author in the script were those of "Hannah." played by Mary Mooueid, and "Donough Borsnan." by Lloyd Y-.-. Mr. Wetmore praised these for

Urges Revision of Women's Rights Laws In Quebec

QUEBEC (CPI-Lionel Ross (L- Moiitreal Voiduni said Wednesday in the legislative assembly provi- sions of the Quebec civil code dealing with women's rights should be scrapped and replaced by leg- islation in tune with modern times.

Speaking in the continuing throne speech debate, Mr. Ross urged the Quebec government. to set up a commission of experts to amend clauses of the Napoleonic civil code dealing with women's legal rights.

Members of the Quebec bar. of the chamber of notaries. and of the attorney-generals department were suggested as members of the proposed commission.

Existing provisions of the civil code on women go back to anti- quity, Mr. Ross said. and consti- tute an "abuse of force."

Legal authorities in France who drafted the Napoleonic code thou- ght men's supremacy over women was "natural law."

Mr. Ross said women's virtually non-existent juridical status was like "an lmpregnable citadel in Quebec" although the picture was progressing in other parts ef the world.

He asked the government to set up domestic relations courts and to consider the possibility of in- stituting maternity allowances.
