| had no other foundation than personal malice or prejudice were carried to the

Intelligence Department. Mr. Bester, a Justice ot the Peace and a great land owner, was anespecial object of trust. His case undoubtedly peculiar. One of his sonsis in the Boer ranks; another is in jail here asa spy, while he himself is in the neutral camp at Intombi. His over, is one of the few that have es- caped the ravages of the invaders. While the homesteads of loyal farmers have been looted and destroyed. Bester’s has been protected by a Red Cross flag. Under cover of night a small party went out to ascertain whether this was not an abuse of the Geneva Convention. The flag was found to bea sheet, and the cross a red flannel petticoat. There was no sign of the house having been occu- pied, except by the enemy’s pickets. The flag was accordingly sent to Gen- eral Joubert, with a note calling his attention to this deception.

Many natives have been taken into custody for communication with the enemy. Some are accused of signal- ling during the day the most likely place for a shell. Butthe favorite charge is the traditional one of signal- ling with lights. A careful watch was kept on several houses, the windows of which were strongly illuminated un- til the early hours of the morning. One building in particular was long suspect- ed. If stands on a hill overlcoking the plain toward Bulwara. and from a distance the signalling looked undoubt- edly real. For twu nights an officer had the house under observation, and was convinced that he was on the track of a traitor. Having called together his company he crept on hands and knees to the building, only to discover a half- even door, and that the dots and dashes of the signals were nothing more than interruptions of the light caused by the Kaffir women and chil - dren walking about the room.

Revelations of this kind only stimu- lated invention. Tke most amazing fictions passed from mouth to mouth until a general order was issued threat- ening with punishment the fabricators and publishers of rumors circulated to disturb the equanimity of the besieged garrison. Oneexample of credulity may suffice. Everybody must have noted the curious effect produced by the rising and setting ef stars—a strange flashing of light, dueto héat refraction. It is, perhaps, excusable that these momentary flashes should be mistaken for signals. But that Sirius —-the brightest star in th- firmament— should be reported as a Boer signal- ling balloon passes belief. Yet, night

A belated despatch from Mount Prospect, via Newcastle, dated Thurs- day, June 7, throws light on the armistice agreed upon between the British and Boers recently. It appears that General Buller met Gen. Chris- tian Botha on June 2.at O'Neill’s farm, between Umguela and Majuba, and summoned Botha to surrender. Gen- eral Botha said he was not empowered to accede to the demand. General 3uller replied : ‘Very well,’ and turned to go away, when General Botha press ed him to made a proposal. General Buller said he had no proposal to make, but pointed out that the Boers | were surrounded and referred to the 'uselessness of shedding unnecessary blood.

‘What do you want us to do?’ asked General Botha beseechingly.

‘Return to your farms, leave your big-guns, and await Lord Robert’s de- cision, replied General Buller.

The federal commandant said he would refer the question to the burgh- ers.

recently sur rendered to the British 1s situated 180 miles from Kimberley, 32 miles from 103 from nesburg; ithas an_ elevation of 4,600 feet. ‘The old village is situated on the right bank ofthe Schoonspruit, and ts connected by a bridge with the newtown. ‘The latter, dating frem 1888, owes its existence entirely to the discovery of gold, and has far surpass- ed the old village in size and impor- tance, at one time bidding fair to rival Johannesburg. Over-speculation and mismanagement, however, have sadly hampered the progress ofthe town. The completion of the railway con- necting Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom with Johannesburg will, howeevr, be of immense service. Already the gold mining industry shows evidence of in- creased vitality and there is every hope of a substantial improvement in the early future. Diamonds have been discovered in the neighborhood, small in size and green in color, but it does not follow that further researches should not frove more _ successful. Above all, coal has been found in large quantities, and of good quality, which means that low-grade ores formerly un- workable, may now be profitably brought to bank.
