Horse Sueps.—East of St. Columba’s Church grounds, East Point, have recently been erected a long shed containing twenty- five apartments, five feet broad and ten feet jong, each, intended for shelter for the horses while the parishioners are attending charch. As many more will be eompleted text summer. Each apartment ia properly enclosed and under lock and key Father Yiclatyre is the prime mover in the matter and deserves credit for the underteking.

The Cabinet shuffle is much discussed. The Journal (Independent) coupliments the Grovernpment on the accession of Mr. Patter son, and expresses the opinion that next to
Meredith and McCarthy, he is the strongest available man in Ontario. With the Govern ment officials he is extremely popular. Patterson was sworn in as Secretary of State apd Hon. Mr. Bowell as Minister of Militia, yesterday. Chapleau will be sworn in as Minister of Customs to-day, at Montreal.
Caron has accepted the portfolio of post- master-general and will probably be sworn in to-day.

high official of Morvcco, is forcibly detain- ed by the French at Algeria.
The sheriff is accused of using his religious influence to animate the tribes against French rule, and much excitement is caused.
Brussets, Jan. 24.—A portion of the residence of the Duke of Arenburg in
this city was burned this morning. The Ds imoces Loved assillo ef Osroy Dulmon,
and her young children barely escaped with their lives. The palace isa very old one and many historical associations cling about it. The room known as Count Eg- mont’s cabinet, which for 325 years had re- mained exactly as left by that unfortunate prince at the time of his arreat in 1576, was destroyed, together with most of its valu able treasures. A number of historical pictures of great worth were either des- troy ed or badly damaged.
Reara, Jan. 23.—Superintendent Jar- vis, in the Herchmer inquiry, charged Davin with having aitempted to bribe him by offering to get Commissioner Herchmer removed and give him the position of as- sistant commissioner, if he would work against Tweed, Divin's opponent, which he refused todo, He admitted having asked and got from the commissioner a writing in which that officer said he was against Davin because of the latter’s attack on the force. This writing he obtained in consequence of 4 statement made on behalf of or by Mr. Davin, that the commissioner supported him. Witness said that on the eve of the election Davin was drunk at Maple Creek
Loxp \N, Jan. 23.—On enqxiring into the reai causes of Lord Salisbury’s action, pvints were elicited which indicate that the retention of Sir R D. Morier as ambaasador at St. Petersburg is due to the fact that the government is co-operating with the German and Italian Governments in trying to persuade the Czar to abandon French alliance and join the European pact, leav- ing France isolated, Sir R, D. Morier, who is persona grata at the Russian court, being much hked by the Ozar, is using his influence to arrange a conference between the emperors of Russia and Germany, at which it is hoped the old harmony of re- lations may be re-established.
