On Saturday February 7th, the Imlach-Olmstead crew out- played the Detroit Red Wings by a wide margin to vacate the cellar of the National Hockey League. The Leafs played like real champions that night and certainly gave their supporters new hopes as far as the. playoffs are concerned. But the very next night they go into Chicago and perform like a bunch of in- experienced youngsters and fall victims to Rudy Pilous and his — Black Hawks 7-2. ‘

THE PERFORMANCE was hard ‘to figure out {n the light ot Leafs’ play the -night before, -but-the—cold--hard—facts . were_; had crushed the Toronto outfit by a five-goal margin.

This past Saturday those Maple Leafs were about as Hot an ‘outfit as you have seen all season. They broke loose frém those

of ease. Indeed, it was only stellar netminding by Glenn Hall that prevented the Hawks from absorbing a much worse lacing than they did. The Leafs won 5-1 but Hall stopped! several that had goal labelled all over them.

nigh{s earlier in Chicago, with ‘the Hawks running wild on the visiting Leafs. This time however the whole situation was | chanced and after that opening period, the Hawks didn't belong | on the same ice surface. i

Leafs supporters had their hopes raised once more. They were acain out of the cellar and all that was needed to stay out was fo beat the Red Wings in Detroit on Sunday night. i

It didn’t look like anv great problem to accomplish this feat. After all eight days before, the Toronto club had made the Red Wings look like a gang ef schoolboys. After that display against Chicago the night before, it was hardly passible that Leafs would let the like of the Detroiters humble them.
