The manner in which Pope, the great Eng- lish poet, was rserved by the uncommon sagacity of his cg is truly remarkable. This animal, which was called Marquis, could not agree with a favourite servant of this illus- trious writer ; he constantly growled when near him, and would even show his teeth when this servant approached. Although the English poet was singularly attatched to‘this dog, (which was a spaniel of the largest species), yet on account of extreme neatness which he pushed almost to excess, he would never allow him to remain in his chamber. Nevertheless, in spite of the most 'tive orders, the spaniel would fre- quent y sneak towards evening into the a t, of his master, and would not be driven from it without the greatest diliiculty.
