One of the great mineral wonders of Mexico, and perhaps of the world, is the Iron Mountain in the immediate vicinity of Durango, in the State of Durango. The Iron Mouutain is nearly two miles in length, and one mile wide, avd about 700 feet high. Above the survace un- covered and in sight, it shows about 200,000,000 tons of pure ore, Teady to be shovelled or rolled. without amy cost of mining, into the furnaces ereeted at its base. Much of this ore ranges from seventy to ninety per cent, and some is carried directly to the forge. It works very kindly, and easily assumes the form of steel. There is every reason to be- lieve ores of such rare superiority, when subject to all modern improvements in iron making. will produce iron and steel unsurpassed auywhere in the world,either in Sweden, or Biscay in Spain, or Eng- laud er the United States.
The examination of the Davies School took place on the 28th and 29th ult. In the forenoon of the first day the classes in the sixth grade and the princi- pal’s department were examined. In the afternoon of the same day the exam- inations were held in the forth and fifth grades. On the following day the lower graces were examived. The examina- tions throughout were very satisfactory. The trustees, on this occasion, were con- spicuos by their absence, only one being present on the first day and none the last. This shows a lack of interest on their part, and is very discouraging to the teachers who iabored so diligently during the term just ended. Even the secre- tary, who was always very punctual on previous occasions, was attending to his other duties. We cannor understand how he can make the necessary reports to the Superintendent ‘of Education un- less he’draws on his imagination, which would not be prudent when the reputa- tion of others is involved. The parents who have the welfare of their children at heart sliould at least have attended.— Progress,
The “* Domestic Menthly ” for July, just out, is attracting attention not oniy to its wood cuts and its novelties of fashion, but to its delineation of certain styles of dress which, according to fashionable usuage, are designed for special occasions only. What well-in- formed ladies wear at the watering places morning, noon, and night, what they travel in, how they dress to play at arehery and lawn-tennis parties, «nd in what material and shape their bathing suits appear—all these specialties are noted. Decided novelties are introduced in the Roman apron dress, and in the new modes of trimming summer toilettes. The articles on Jewelry, fans, gloves, and parasols mention the latest changes in these auxiliaries of dress, Small boys have a chapter entirely to themselves this mouth in the ** Domestic Monthly,” and what they may wear is well joined on to what they must not go. without. The closing article on art-wo r mid- summer will give vacationists fresh hints concerning something todo when they are doing nothing. It will be observed that Kate Greenaway and Mother Hub- bard fancies have given a decided color- ing to the general fashions for little folk, recently set forth in this excellent maga- zine.
The Literary Department contains two stories, by Esther Searle Kenneth and Mary E. Moffat, a paper on “ American Women as Skilled Workers,” by Ellen E. Dickeuson, Floricultural Notes by John Thorpe, wioner of several first prizes at the June Exhibition in New York, a London letter from a special correspondent, giving the latest gossip from the great English metropolis. Un- der “ Fact, Rumor, and Comment” will be found a full account of Messrs. Gil- bert and Sullivan’s new play, ‘* Pa- tience,” which will be one of the early forthcoming theatrical sensations on this side of the water. Mrs. Henry Ward Beecher’s Household Departmert will be found eminently practicai and timely.
