A Well Grounded Fear. # Some of the Oppositionists have been ex- pressing their fear lest an increase of sub- sidy, after the census of 1891 has been taken, will improve the finances of the McLeod Administration. Of course it will ; —and the Government, by ¢ mtinuing the practice of a rigorous economy, will be in a position to give the country the full benefit of the additiona! subsidy that will be ob- tuined. The people may rest assured that Mr. McLeod and_ his associates will take advantage not only of an increase of snb- sidy, but of every other incident and cir- cumstance, to strengthen the financial position of the Province. ‘

A Good Sign.

Tue Patriot is becoming more and more pleasing to the Liberal Conservatives. It is evident that the resu'ts of the discussion and the canvass point to the defeat of the Oppositiva’s's and to a great triumph for the McLeod Administration. For the

An Opportunity to Right a Wrong.

Newspaper correspondents and others have inferred from the Patriot’s articles that the Hon. Donald Eerguson was him- self guilty of the Land Office embezzle- ments. In point of fact a despatch to that effect was actually telegraphed to all the deading newspapers uf this continent. The farmers of the Third District of Queen’s County wil, on the 30th inst., have an op- portunity to prove their resentment on ac- count of this foul wrong and injury done to one of their number—an op- portunity of which they will be glad to take advantage. The honest men of Covehead, Little York and Traca- die, of Mount Stewart, Fort Augustus and Scuthport, will not permit the stigma of a crime, of which they know that hewas not the perpetrator, to rest upou Mr. Fer- guson. They. will show to the world that they have firm faith inthe honesty and integrity of a f+liow-countryman who has been most foully maligned.

Keep it Before the People.

Keep it before the people—That the Sulli- van Administration, by reducing the rate of expenditures, saved to the taxpayers a million of dollars in tea years.

Keep it before the people—That the Mc- Leod Administration will msintain the same scale of economy, and save every dollar of the public money that can be saved.

Keep it before the people—That the Sulli- van Administration collected debts due the Province to the amount of nearly $80,000 —which, if they had not done so, must have come vut of the pockets of the tax- payers.

Keep it before the people—That the Mc- Leod Administration, also, promise to ‘*vigorously press to a settlementour claims against the Dominion Government.”

Keep it before the people—That the Sulli- van Administration ubtained from Ottawa, in spite of the scoffs of the Opposition, an annual grant of $20,000 a year—equal to a capital sum of $500,000. Keep it before the people—That the capital of the Province at Ottawa is larger now than it was ten years ago—though not one cent has been taken from the tax-payers in the past six years. : Keep it before the people—That, notwith- standing this fact, the Sullivan Adminis tration expended more money upon educa- tion, upun roads, upon bridges, upon ex- hibitions, upon the encouragement of agri- culture—than any of their predecessors.

Keep it before the people—That it is’ the policy of the McLeod Administration to continue in the same course and to ‘‘go one better” in respect to our farming in- terests, s

Keep it before the peiple—That nothing— absolutely nothing—has been opposed to this excellent policy of the McLeod admin- istration.

The Penny Readings.

Ir was like ‘*oldtimes” in St. Peter’s Schcolroom last evening—th ugh some of the forms of other evenings were absent, some voices silent. The audience was large, Rev. T H. Hunt presiding, and the entertainment altogether epjvyable. Miss Barratt and Messrs. H. A. fanton and F. P, Carvell sang solos tu the piano aecom- paniment of Mr. L. W. Watson; and Messrs. Tanton, Carye!l, Earle and Foster gave a quartette in which there was excel- ient harmony. The readings by Rev. James Simpson, Ilon. T. B. Haviland and Mr. W A. O. Morson were all entertain- ing. Mr. Vinnicombe’s violin solos were, as ever, hizh'y appreciated ; and the cornet scl» by Mr G. I. Foster was we'll dune, as also the corner duet by Messrs Foster and Hines. The pianoduet by Messrs. Earle and Watson were yery delightful, the pian» kindly loaned for the oceasion by, the Mossrs. Miller Bros. being a very fine one, and the pi- nists masters of thé instrument. MeLean Still Missing.

NO CLUE TO HIS WHEREABOUTS.

Evidence at the Investigation.

Tur investigation into the sudden and mysterious disappearance of Artemas Mc- L-an was. continued at Summerside on Monday evening. Below is the evidence taken :-- ‘

JossrH Reap (sworn).—l knew McLean. J was. in Novonan’s on Saturday night. I went*in at the back door and out the front. Dave Lefurgey, Will.ams, F. Kelly, R. W. Sharp, and others, were there. It was about 5 30 p. m. McLean was not there. No one was under the. influence of liquor except Williams.

Wit.1am Stewart (sworn). —I am in the employ of D.. Stewart. Art McLean was in the same employ up to Saturday, lith inst. I saw him about 7 p-gn in the cut- ting room. He was suber then. I paid him four dollirs. I have not seen him since. Il heard he was missing about 10 o’cluck on Monday morning. His wife told me he had not been home since Satur- day evening, She said, he gave her two dollars. She wondered if he had been on aspree. She said he had been away one night before. I went to Noonan’s after that between 10 and 11 a. m., and saw Jerry Noonan. He told me MeLeau had been there on Saturday,evening, and left about 12 o’clock. He did not thiuk there was anyone with him. He said he was pretty drunk I neversaw McLean drunk, but heard he did drink.

Wu. Noonan (sworn).—I live at my father’s, on Water Street. I knew Mec- Lean. I did not see him on Saturday, 11th. I was in the house that evening.. I went to bed at 9 o’clock. I was in the hall, kit- chen and barroom, but not in Jerry’s shop. Sherry came to my room about 11 o'clock. He said, ‘‘ Are youasleep?” Isaid, ‘‘No.” He said, ‘‘ There is a man in the yard lying drunk ; what shall I do with him?’ I told him to put him in ‘the stable and call the old man. I don’t know if he called the old man. I don’t know anything more about the man. [ heard‘nothing more tili Sun- day morning. I heard a team come in the yard about daylight. I heard no_nvise. I sleep in the room over Jerry’s shop. I saw Sherry next morning in the kitchen. Iasked him about the queer fellow. He said he put him to bed and he got up and went to Nancy’s room. I then commenced tv joke Nancy about the fellow getting into her room. She said he got his fingers jammed in the door. She said McLean wanted to go home. She dia not say what my father said to him. Sherry said the last time he saw him was half-way between the steps and the stable, He said he must be pretty sensible when he came back part of the way with the dog. He futher said he was not angry with him. Katie did not tell me anything about it, or any of the children. I left the dog in the stable about 8 o% 1 ck on Saturday evening. -1 locked the stable and put the key in the porch Mother told me that after father went dowa tothe nursery he came right beck, and that the children were crying. Il heard no deg barking in the house on Saturday night. If Gardiner’s dog had

4 barked 1 think I would have heard him.

Katie Noonan, (sworn)—I remember the night the man came to the nursery. It was Saturday before last. Three other children sleep in the same room I was asleep when the man came in. There was uo light. Nancy sleeps in the next room

off the nursery. I was sleeping in the nur- sery when 1 awoke. I saw.the man at Nancy’s door pushing against it. I then

went up and told my father. He came down. The man was still at the door. Father said to him, ** You arg annoying the house all night.” He said that he was not the man, and then went out of the nursery. Nancy said he was pushing the door, and she jammed his fingers a little. Lhe next morning | heard them say that the man’s name was McLean. My father brought a light down. JI remember the man had all his clothes on except his boots. Sherry toek him down stairs. I beard a noise in the house. The noise was in the room off the nursery next to Nancy’s. After McLean went out I went to sleep. I talked ¢0 my father about it since. I forget what he told’ me.’ 1 think he talked to me about the man, but can’t remember what ne said. Mrs. McDonald told me what to say. Iwas not awake when he told Nancy not to jam his fingers. He had something dark on his feet, not his stockings. I did not see my father put a hand un him. J heard father tell Sherry io put him out.

The Cape Breton Railway.

A correspondent writes under recent date : The steam shovel is for loading bal- Jast, and, in order to keep the bank from freezing, it would be necessary to work it night and day, but, though they had the men here for that purpose, they abandon- ed the project, and decided instead to work as long as possible the way they had been doing. But when they open in the spring L expect it will be day and night work, for there is a great deal of work still to be done. There is about twenty- two miles ballasted the first lift, which leaves twenty-three still to lift. Be- sides, it has to receive a second lift equal to the first, which will make eighteen in- ches of bajlast. ‘he bailast is good, and that will makea splendid road bed. IL might say just here that there is no slight- ing of any part of the work. The sleepers are a great many of then. of cedar, but those furnished in the country are of juni- per, or hemlock. The cattle guards are walled with cedar, and ‘fencing posts are the same, madeafter the fashionof the snow fence posts, only the lower sill extends the same distance on both sides of the fence. The fencing material is either of woven wire, or barbed with one batten on top.

The work of completing the buildings at Point Tupper is progressing, notwithstand- img the rough weather, and wil] sogn be completed outside. The buildings are on the shore with piles driven to the depth of about twenty feet, then there is the free- stone for about five feet. The pits fur the engines are of freestone also, the walls of brick, the roof of felt, with covering of pitch or gravel. Right up from those buildings there is a cutting twenty-three feet deep, wide enough for the main line and two sidings. Then right at the upper end of this cutting is the ‘marine slip, own- ed by a company in Halifax. About’ haif’a mile from this is what 1s Galied the head of the harbor. Here a bridge on the maiao road crosses the river to Port Hawkesbury, Point Tupper and Hiwkesbury being op- posite, it being but a few minutes row ina boat, but to walk around across the bridge itis two miles. We follow up the Tupper side of the river, and just befure we come to the main road crossing there is a cutting in the solid rock I think at least thirty feet deep, but very short, for the next four miles itis up quite a grade, lined with rocky barrelis of ‘smal freestone. At the top of the ‘grade,’ * whit is called Mines Crossing, two miles from which is Barba Cove coal mines. Though not in operation at present, they seem to think there is plenty of coal here. There is some talk of starring to work there, but it will takea great deal of talk to take much coal out ; but, notwithstand- ing, there is quite a village here.

The next station is McIntyre’s Lake, be- tween which the road is pretty level. Here there is situated to our Jeft & mosp beauti- ful lake, on three sides lined with bustes; the other has a beautiful sand beach. They say here is splendid fishing, and, strange to say, that in this 1.ke there are oysters. In a cutting near by, some fifteen feet deep, they dug up oyster shells. By what science can we get deep en ugh to ascertain how they came there. This lake is situated on the top of a hill, from which we have to descend three miles of ‘thé heaviest grade on the road, at a place called-River Inhab- itants, which we cross by an overhead steel bridge. Down this river is an interval of about one mile wide, which 1 have no doubt would be fine farming land were it worked; but instead of working it, if you look up you will see the farmers living on the hillside, which looks too barren to grow much.

The next thipg worthy of note is the two steel trestle bridges, thé first called Dulan’s Bridge, 65 feet by about 350, on which is quite asharp curve. The other ig called McDonald’s Bridge, which is 86 by 930 feet, from which we have‘a view of the sur- rounding country. Just down this gorge is West Bay Chapel, on the side of a sequestered-iooking hill. We are now with- in half a mile of West Bay siding, and the top of the grade-from River Inhabitants, One half mie trom ‘herg ‘lies ‘ihe ballast pit, the centre ef action when the men are all at work, close beside which runs a beau- ufal stream cf water, from which the en- gines are supplied. They have purchased fourteen acres of this hill for a ballast pit, which will last our day out, as it is of great depth. One mile and a half from this, as we yeurney on, we reach the highest point on thé ©. B. Railway, and a P. EB, Islander had the honoriof bemg thé first man that ever turned an engine over ‘it.
