Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not. but thafs no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders that are unseen and un- seeable in the \\'Ol‘ld.

You tear apart the baby-‘s rattle and see what makes the noise in- side but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this, world there ll nothing else real and abiding. _

No Santa Claus! Thank God, he lives and lives forever. A thous- and years from now, Virginia, nay ten times ten thousand years from now_ he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Certain legends have grown in time which, while not strictly based on truth, nevertheless nevi this truth about them; it please, people to connect closely the beauty and sweetness o: the Nativity with tzhe sweetness and beauty or W‘ life.

The slork is the bird of good luck in the minds of the farmers of Palestine, even today. It brings the springrtime, they say; and their word for this bird ls "Abu Saad" WITICIT means "the father of goodness" because storks devour such quantities of locusts and thu] save food for the peasants in that land.

Another legend associated t-hl rooster with Christ's birth. It be- came a belief that this bird. which‘ crows in the early morning, once a year crew all night through; so that Shakespeare put into his play, "Hamlet," the lines;

Some say, that ever ‘gainst that season comes

So hallowed and so gracious Ls the time.

The rooster, along with the rav~ en and the rook, enters into aa- other curious fable from the long ago; and in this, ihree iour-Icliled animals have their share with th! three birds. It dates from the fourtu century, or even earlier. Some- where in England this quaint Old legend is pictured out in n wall- paintlng.
