The December meeting of the wow Haven Women's Institute met at the home oi Mrs. Catherine Dccherty on Dec 3rd. Meeting op- mcdiwith the Institute "ode" and repeating the "Creed" in unison.

Roll call was responded with an exchange of Christmas gifts. Min- uteLwere read and approved. The yyguurer reported proceeds from Chicken supper amounted to $140.01 It was moved and seconded that all bills regarding supper be paid, there was a balance o; $00.01 after all bills were paid. It was decided to meet at the homes of Mrs. Hugh MacDonald and Mrs. Alton New- man's to quilt for the orphanages. flclrool committee reported that coal scuttle, broom and Christmas decorations needed for school. 1t was decided that each member buy 2 lbs. of sugar to make candy to sell at Christmas concert. It was moved and seconded that we buy apples to treat the patients at the Sanitarium and the school children at Christmas.

SOCIAL EVENING — An en- joyable evening was spent on Dec. 27th at the comfortable home of Mr. and Mrs. George Beer, King- ston. when members oi Queen Mary I. O. B. A. met to show their appreciation to Mr. Beer for so capabiy looking after their Lodii room attending to the fire and lamps. Mr. Davis Ward capably acted as chairman for the occasion and after making complimentary remarks, called on Mrs. Neil Camp- bell to read the addess. Mrs. Campbell expressed the feelings of all the members and gave their hcartiest thanks to Mr. Beflr- M"- Beer also has helped the Lodlfi out in many ways and is much appreciated. FUNERAL SERVICES — The funeral of William Lloyd. the in- fant son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Campbell, Spring Valley, was held from Keir Memorial Presbyterian Church an Sunday, Jan. 4th at 2.30 pm. New Discoveries At Atomic Plant

OTTAWA. Jan. 2 —(G.P) — The National Research Council said to- day that "hundreds" of new dis- coveries "muet be expected" to (Q1. low the use of radioactive mater» iais now being produced at the atomic energy development plant at Chalk River, Ont.

In a review of its 1947 activities, the council said that already prac- tical results have becn achieved in the use 0f radio-active materials.

For instance, Dr. J. W. '1‘. Spinks, now of the University of 5351mm“- wan and formerly on the" staff oi’ the atomic energy plant discover- ed that phos-phate fertilizer added to the soil at seeding accounted for 80 per cent of the phosphate taken up by wheat in plants in the early stages oi growth.

He showed that plants fertilized at. seeding take up a higher per cent of plant foods from surround- ing soil than unfertilized plants grown in the same soil.

The results were obtained by us- ing radioacflve phosphorus which served as a tracer and could be photographed merely by touching i-he plant with s. photographic plate. _

The council took over the Chalk River plant last February and now working in it are 1,000 skilled and many with world reputations workers. half oi them scientists in nuclear research. They are "Wvrkifls at top speed to produce radioactive materials for countless uses in medical and industrial re- search and in the search for the newer knowledge which is funda- mental to scientific progress," ssid the council. '

In reporting on its research in other fields, the Council disclosed. 1. A small, low-cost, ship-borne radar sac. has been designed ior use of merchant shipping.

2. Efforts are being made to find a more suitable lubricant for rsii- way-csr journal bearings.

3. A direct-reading electronic in- strument designed to locate hot joints on power lines has been given extensive field tests WhlCIi demonstrated its practical value. 4. A new type oi electron ac- celerator known as the microton, which will be suitable for basic re- search in nuclear physics, is under development.

5. Instruments now under devol- opment to make use of sound echoes ss s drill-hole eosploring device in‘ geophysical prospecting, appear promising and will be given full field trials.

6. A high-speed motion picture camera, capable of operating s.“ a rate of 200,000 frames e. sec- ond, has been designed and built and will permit the securing of details on industrial processes and operations that have heretofore been too fast for the human eye to sec and sitalyze.

7. Fermentation studies, which earlier produced butanedioi from low grade wheat and surplus crops for use as anti-freeze and ea a source material for numerous or-

Many friends and relatives of Mr. Claude Somers were shocked and deeply saddened on the night at November 13, i947, to learn his untimely passing at the P. E. I. Hospital, sa the result of a high- way accident.

The late Mr. Somers was forty" years of age, the son of Mr. and
