He was born Nov. 25, 1881, at Sotto 11 Monte, in the province of Bergamo. a centre studded with churches 30 miles northeast of Milan.
WAS FARMING FAMILY
His was a family of modest farmers.
Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was 11 when he entered the diocese seminary at Bergaimc. Twelve years later, Aug. 10, 1904, he was ordained a priest in Rome's Santa Maria in Monte Church.
He celebrated his first mass over what is regarded as the tomb of St. Peter.
The qualifications of the young priest were immediately obvious to his bishop, Msgr. Radini-Te- deschi of B-ergamo, and Father Roncall-i became the personal secretary of the prelate in 1905. He held this post until the bishop died in 1914. i
It gave the future pope an early knowledge of the administrative structure of the Roman Catholic Church. It also gave him a chance to gain experience as a teacher, at the Bengamo Semin- ary, in ecclesiastlc history. JOINED ARMY
The first World War interrupted his ecclesiastical career briefly. He first served as a sergeant in
Mr. Cle-I fell on rocks and after regaining consciousness shook himself and
the medical corps of the Italian army. By the time tht war ended
he was an army chaplain.
The war over, Father Roncalli returned to his province of Ber- gamo for a three—year term as a lecturer on theology and church history. ‘
In 1921 he undertook the first of Vatican assignments which were to bring him praise from three popes. v
Pope Benedict XI summoned Father Rioncalli to Rome and gave him the job of reorganizing the Congregation for the Propa- gation of the Faith — the con- gregation that directs the world- wide missionary activities of the Roman Catholic Church.
A year later Pius XI succeeded Benedict and sent him travelling to many foreign centres during the next four years.
CHANGES JOBS
In 1925, when he was named a -
bishop, he entered the Vatican diplomatic service.
His first assignment was as visitatore apostolic to Bulgaria. Five years later he was made first apostolic delegate to Bul- garia.
In 1934 he was transferred to Turkey as apostolic vicar and delegate. At the same time he was made delegate to Greece.
He remained in the Balkans an- other 10 years, through the first years of the Second World War.
In 1944 he was nar’ned papal nuncio to liberated Paris.
The prelate remained in Paris eight years, until Pope Pius XII showed his recognition for his nuncio‘s diplomatic work by mak- ing him a cardinal. V
The undaunted patrons of the arts who last night braved the inclemency of the continuing bad weather and betook them- selves to Queen Charlotte High School auditorium to attend the second consecutive performance here by the Earle Grey players, were rewarded richly for their efforts. ' The Toronto Company‘s pro- duction of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy “King Lear" was sup- erb in every particular. In the title role Mr. Grey performed brilliantly, portraying vividly each of the aging monarchs many moods —— his pride. his anger, his gentleness. his mad- ness. and his remorse. Excellent performances were also turned in by each of the chief supporting players: .Tan Kemp in the role of the aging Earl of Gloucester; Douglas Kerr in the role of the devoted Duke of Kent; John Douglas Campbell as the vacillating Duke of Albany; Robert Walker as the wicked Duke of Cornwall; God- frey Jackman as the equally wicked Edmund, Gloucesters illegitimate sbn; Roger Fleming as Edgar, Gloucester’s heir; Peter Sturgess as the Court Jes- t ; and Mary Godwin, Liane (grim and Helene Gilbert as the King’s three daughters, the cal- lous and contemptuous Goneril and Regan. and the gentle Cur- dclia.

Right Rev. W. W. Davis. co- adjuator Bishop of Nova Scotia arrived on the Island Monday to make his first official visit to several of the Anglican churches.
Bishop Davis was conducting a mission in Springhill at the time of the recent mine dsaster and before comng to the Island. visited the 18 Anglican Church family homes there suffering bereavement.
The Island visitations opened at St. John's Church, Milton last night where the service was con- ducted by the Rector Rev. A. E. Piercey with Bishop Davis de- livering the sermon. There was a large attendance.
The rite of Confirmation will be administered to a class of young people prepared by the Rector Rev. M. .l. Finlay at St. James’ Church Port Hill on Thursday morning.

Grand Knight, Wilfred Driscoli, reported that he had been in contact with fellow members of the Order in Springhill on the morning after the “bump” was first experienced, and offered the acid of Ch’town members. He was happy to report that several doc- en members had already contact- ed him offering suggestions and assistance.
A general discussion took place as to the best means of con-tribut- ing aid. It was generally agreed that the members as individuals and as a group should contribute to the relief fund. as well as of- fering additional prayers. and en- rolling deceased members in con- fratern-ities among other sugges— tions.
It was also planned to have a delegation of members attend the Memorial Service in Springhill next month.
Anglican Bishop Davis Visits Island Parishes
