There is one tribute that I would like to pay to the boys cf the school and l think that my doing so is not out oi place on thiioccasion. Since I be- came a teacher ln Queen Square School I hays had frequently to de- plore the lack of application or enthu- siasm in the class. but it has been compensated for by a wonderful gene- rosity and a spirit of unselflshness on the part of the boys that have often elicited my admiration and surprise. After all these are the things that count for most in life. and as the boys

leave the school and enter upon tlteir_

various pursuits. l seem to remember them not so much for what they have been as students as for what they have been as boys.

The organization of thrift.club in the school was one of the happiest in_ novations during the, year and al- though the scheme is still in its incep- .tlon the results already obtained are remarkable. The scheme is one where‘ by the child is encouraged to save by depositing with the teacher whatever proportion oi his earning he desires. The sum oi all money collected ill the class is deposited in the bank at the end oi each week, and when the child has two dollars to his credit he receiv- es a private account and is encouraged to deposit independently. Although the boys have been saving only three months, they have s. credit in the Pro- vincial Bank of over three hundred and fifty dollars, and fifty-eight el- _ready have personal accounts. The practical lesson this scheme teaches in the virtue of thrift, and the advantages accruing to the ‘boy from the conduct- lng of hie small financial transactions should not be overlooked. The musical education of the school was under the capable direction u! Miss Bessie Blanchard, and much pro grrss was made in singing during the school year. The boys who have shown a talent in instrumental music have becll encouraged to continue their studies along this line. l sincer- aly hope that during the coming year new talent will be brouull-l- Olll and developed at the hands oi capable teachers.

During the year Mr. Cass and Miss McCoilrt resigned from the staff 0f the school and three new teachers. Miss Francis, Mr. McKinnon and Mr. Morrissey were added. In the Bl)- pointment oi these teachers the School Board has used excellent judgment. They are all experienced and of the first class and have proven thcmselvee good dlsciplinsrians and skiliul in the art of teaching.

In the passing of the School Year. we have come to the time to pause, 1o back over the past, note ' what ad anoes have been made, what mis- takes have occurred; also to look in- to the future, and, profittlng by the experience of the past, plan for im-

The increased school accommoda- tion provided last year, has made it possible to remove the class that was formerly taught in the casement to an above ground class room. We were able also to remove the classes that we're formerly on the third floor to the second. These changes have been to the physical advantage of the pu. pils affected By the removal of the classes it was possible to enlarge the assembly hall. This hall, well lighted as it is. makes it possible for the school to hold public functions much more conveniently than formerly. In addition there is a rest-room for the teachers, a Principal's office, two other offices and a library, all of which we were without before. In view of the great advantage this in- creased accommodation will be io the pupils both physically and in- tellectually, I feel quite sure that no reasonable person will object to the cosh

Tllc enrollment for this year has been five hundred. an incrcnae over last year's of seventy-eight. To meet this additional enrollment an addi- tional teacher has been appointed. lt is necessary in the best interests of the pupils to have still another tea- cher, We have the room and furni- ture, the only additional cost to the city would be a.teacher‘s supple- ment. All leading educutioltnlists agree that thirty-five should be the maximum number of pupils to be in- structed by onc teacher, some state that twenty-five should be the num. ber. It has been the rather pleasant duty of the teachers oi the school to foster from year to year an interest among the boys in athletics. Almost every class has had its teams in the various branches of sport and competition has kept alive an enthusiasm that has induced a greater loyalty to the school and a keener interest in all its en- deavors.

The interscholastic field day, held inSeptember revealed remarkable boy athletes in both schools. in fnct the performance of Fred McCarey on that occasion. who entered in nine events and won first place ill all-of them, has possibly never been equalled M i"! Interscholastic meet in the DPOVlIIOQ-

When l consider Mr. Chairman, the grave responsibilities of the teacher and ths increasing magnitude of the work in the school. I feel very sens- ibly the need of the generous moral support of the public. That we have this-I do not doubt. That it should continue is very desirable. that, work- ing together we may build up in our city agrsster efficiency in the schools. a more intense interest in education, and a nicer conception among our boys of the high ideals of true citizenship.

In Drawing. Miss Watson and Miss Yeo have done work for us outside their own classes as well as in them. Good work is done in this subject by the individual teachers in their sev- eral classes.

Two years ago. the ‘Red Cross Nurses and City Doctors made a medical inspection of the school. A second inspection has been made by the Red Cross, assisted by the Doc- tors. Considerable improvement was noted in thls--292 defects noted then have been corrected since. The necessity for a. continuance of this work is shown by the fact that in the second inspection the following physical defects have been found, viz: 87.1 per cent defects. other than teeth; 8 per cent defective in teeth only; 95.1 per cent defective in all. Now that this work has been begun, and the necessity for its continu- ance demonstrated, I earnestly hope that those whose duty it may be, whether lSchool Board, City Council. or Prollnciai Government, will not permit it to be discontinued. May I appeal to every parent, and every one interested in the children of tllc city, to use their utmost endeavors to see that this work is carried on.

A few health clubs were organized in the school a year ago. These have been added to during the past year. Now, such a club is organized in all the Grades above two_ The aim has been to interest the pupils not only, in the observance oi health laws themselves, but to have them inter. ested in the general health of the communi p, The small fee of twenty- five cent ‘paid by each member is devoted to procure necessary help for children in the community. A number of young persons needing glasses had them provided ollt of this fund. In the Clubs, regular meetings are held, conducted by tllc officers of the Club under the supervision of thevteacher. The members nrc thus taught how to conduct a meeting. a valuable part of their education. Miss Brown of Toronto, the Director of Junior Red Cross work for the Dom. inion. visited tllc Clubs of tllc school, saw them in session, and conlpli- mcnted them highly on lilo lfficicncy of their work. There arc enrolled in the Junior Red Cross Clubs of tllc scllool 169 members.

I desire here to bear testimony to thc excellency of tllc work done by Miss MacMalion anti llcr associate nurses They have not stopped when tllc mcdicnl examination was lundc. but have visited the homes of pupils found ailing and advised the parents. Pupils are also encouraged to go to tllc Itcd Cross Rooms for advice and consultation. During the winter months. a series of health talks were given by thc nurses at thc Rod Cross Rooms. Many of the pupils of the school attended them. As an aid in

the physical education of thc pupils,‘

I would suggest that tllc basement rooms in tllc old building be fitted up as a gymnasium. supplied with some simple apparatus. The cost would not bc very great.

Believing that habits formed in youth will influence all the after life, the teachers have encouraged the pupils to takc advantage of the offer mnde to them by MrJTowrlss, Manager of the Union Bunk of Cun- udn, viz: That he would open indi- vidual accounts in the Savings Bunk Department for contributors of one cent and upwards. The teachers do not handle any of this moncy_ The pupil takes his or her deposit tothe hank, makes tho deposit and receives a depositors pass book. There are at present, 165 depositors from the school. many of whom are making weekly deposits, others adding to their deposits at irregular intervals.

A concert was given by the pupils during the winter at which upwards of one hundred and twcnty dollars was realized. We had also an illus- trated - lecture from Mr. Smith. Chairman of the School Board, silh- jcct-"Cllarlottctown. One Hundred Years ago." Mr. James Paton dc- llvercd a very interesting lecture, tie. scriptivc of his recent European tour. This series of evening meetings was concluded by a literary evening. when Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Island Authorees, and her works were considered. Hon F. J. Nash gave a biographical sketch of the au- thoress and criticism of her works. This was followed by readings and songs from her work _ he financial returns from these evenings was not great, but the pleasure and bcnciit were.

A very pleasant function of thc year was a re-union of former pu- pils. This was organized and carried out by pupils of Grade Ton_

The Royal Edward Chapter of the Independent Order of the King's Daughters. presented the school with a set of eighteen pictures, on condi- tion that we frame them, which has been done out of the proceeds of the entertainments referred to. These pictures have been hllng on the walls of this llall, in the corridors, also in the class rooms. Besides these. we have received three framed pictures from the Canadian Pacific Railway.

The pupils of Grades seven, eight and nine, have again had the advan- tage of being able to attend the Household,“ ‘ Course given by the Department of Agriculture. No branch of instruction is of greater benefit to a girl than this. I sincere- ly hope that nothing will occur to deprive- our girls in the near or far off future of the advantages of this

study.

Dr_ Alexander Ross, anxious to have increased attention given to reading in the schools, secured a fund for prizes to he given for this subject.
