Hotel Accommodation.

‘The tide of summer travel has set in, and many of our visitors from across the border, as wel! as the health seekera of our own Province, are wending their way to that lovely spot, Prince Edward Island.”

So far, however—we regret to say it— the “tile” has not been strong this Indeed, it has not been so strong as in some former years. It is but a very low neap tide, and brings very little wealth with it. “Slack times in the States” is one of the causes. But the chief cause undoubtedly is the want of first-class accommodation. The tide of travel is branching off to the West and East of the Island. Tourists are going to points in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia— because they cannot have here the conveniences to which they are accustomed at home. Our hotel keepers do as wellas they can. But they lack capital, aud the community hasn’t the public spirit to combine and provide the means required to erect and start a first class ‘o, though nature has

Blake and Brown.

Tue Patriot quotes the Halifax Chronicle's justification of Mr. Blake for negociating with one “J. E. Brown,” for a supply of information about the North- west—said, *‘information”’ to be obtained by Brown as a surveyor in the employ ot the Government. We fear that no explanation that either Mr. Blake or bis organs can make will satisfy the public that the Leader of the Opposition has not been guilty of a mean act and a very gross impropriety. The letters prove, say the Toronto Mail, that Mr. Blake “is capable of enjoying, using, profiting by dirty work, and that he is not above taking personal part in it, if no *confi- dential friend” is at hand to aid him in the operation. To encourage a man to take service in the Government surveys and then give Mr. Blake the benefit of ail the information aad communications the spy might get-—was that honorable couduct ? Suppose we sent a reporter (it would be, we think, impossible to find one to do it) intoS. H. Blake’s office to spend a few months there as a clerk and get all the party secrets—would the public call that hon- orable conduct? Suppose we got a re- porter to go to the Globe (no reporter would doit, we are sure) and collect for us all the information that he could get from his chiefs in the office? Would the public consider that honorable con-

duct? No, the public would say it was scandalous, indecent, indefensible; and

the man who would be guilty of it would forfeit the countenance and friendly hand of every man who had a particle of | self- respect in his composition.” = dito!

Industrial Education at Home

SOMETHING like a new departure in education, or perhaps we should say an experiment, has been successfully tried at Salem, Mass., this season. An _ exhibi- tion of about 150 articles made by the pupils of the Bowditch Grammar School, was an ayreeable‘surprise to every ove of the many who attended. All the articles were made at home by the children of the school, without any hope of reward or idea that the articles would be publicly exhibited. The only assistance which the pupils received was in the way of suggestions from teachers avd _ parents. The first movement was made about five months ago. ‘ome idea of what has been manufactured, may be gathered from the mention of a few sample articles : waste baskets,mats,a full dress, tidies, aprons, scarfs, pillow-cases, darn- ing, quilts, button-holes, sofa-pillows,

paintings etc., from the girls. The boys made engines, chairs, cabinets, bird- houses, boxes, drawings, boots and

o"% curried leather, besides many things. The girlsalso exhibited some excellent specimens of plain and fancy cooking, and the loaves of beautiful, and delicious bread, made by the little girls would do credit to the best house- keeders. Ove loaf especially took a prize. Perhaps nothing in the exhibi- tion showed more skill than the large side of leather which one little fellow tanned, curried and finished with his own hands. It is said that industrial work will be taken up in several other of the schools of Salem another season. This is what may be called real practi- cal education. As a rule, education on this Continent has had a tendency to make pupils dissatisfied with industrial occupations. This fact has been receiv- ing much attention amongst the thought- ful in the United States, and the ex- periment we here chronicle is one of the outcomes of the discussion which has taken place on the subject. The experi- ment, it appears to us, has one import- aot feature. It will havea tendency to develop and make known the natura! bent of young people for an occupation. Many wistakes are made‘ by parents and others in choosing for young folks occupations in life for which they are utterly disqualified. They often make & poor parson of one who would have made an excellent blacksmith, or a brief-

We, the undersigned citizens of Char- lottetown, have learnt with much regret of your removal from the oflice of Consul of the United States of America for Prince Edward Island.

During a sojourn amongst us of nearly two years, we have had many opportunities of appreciating your courteous performance of the various duties pertaining to your position, and your manly integrity of character has deservedly earned for you universal respect and esteem.

Socially, asa gentleman of culture and / ability, you have at all times thrown your influence quietly, thongh none ‘the less effectively, toward the assistance of many of the philanthropic and charitable efforts of our citizens, and asa favored guest in our private homes, left many a pleasant remembrance.of your agreeable and enter- taining compavicnship.

Your admirable and well-chosen speeches in public were always worthy of the occa- sion and of your office, and as a representa- tive here of the American people, your judicious conduct has added to that friendly teeling which it was your evident desire should exist between Canada and the neighboring Republic.

Wi-h renewed expressions of regret and esteem, we beg to wish you a kindly fare- well, andto Mrs. Worden you will please convey our regret that the exigencies of the service to which you belong deprive us of the society of a lady whose many good qualities have endeared her to all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance.

I cannot undertake to thank you in suitable language for this expression of your appreciation and esteem, and for the very kind and flattering terms in which you refer to Mrs. Worden and myself.

It may have been your misfortune at sometime to say good-bye to those for whom you cared, and if so you have ex- perienced the difficulty 1 find in giving utterance to words to express myself in fitting phrase. They rise to the lips but the tongue cannot form them.

For the terms of approbation in which you refer to my conduct of the Consular Office. accept my thanks. I can say with all sincerity that I have discharged those,dutirs according to my instructions, and im- partially ‘towards all. If I have done well, I have but done what I ought.

Ona number of occasions, it has been my good fortune to meet you at public entertainments and banquets. At those times my heart has been made to beat with a quicker pulse whilé listening to the encomiums paseed by your several speakers upon my country, her institutions, and her progress; and I have often thought that could the great majority of my people know of the warmth of feeling that is growing steadily for them, how rapidly would the obstacles to a more perfect commercial understanding, and to a reciprocity of interests, dissolve and become a memory and a wonder to the coming generation. The Protectionists should all be made Consuis and sent to Canada.

It is nearly two years since first Mrs. Wor- den and myself came to the shores of this beautifal Island, and I well remember as I sailed up the Stgaits from Pictou, one per- fect summer’s day, how vivid was the im- pression made on my mind by the ever- changing but continuous loveliness of the scenery; and neither of us have found eceasion to change the impressions first formed of the quiet beauty of Island shores and landscapes.

A farther charm was woven about us in our associations and intercourse with you, end I cannot help thinking what a for- tunate man my successor is to have his Consular lot cast in such pleasant places.

Had we had the desire to resist these spells, we still would have found ourselves more aud more entangled in the web of courtesy, kindness and hospitality that has continued to this time. Probably it is well that we should bid ycu good bye now while the power of self-will is left us. But wo will still carry away a lengthening chain which can ouly bo unbound when we at some future time—if Fate is kind to us— return, picking up the links and drawing ourselves nearer to the hos- pital shores of Prince Edward [sland. To slightly change the wording of an old stanza though,—

Theze eyes may miss thee many a yea,

But unforgetten every charm,

Though lost to sight to mem’ry dear,

Let me once more renew Mrs. Worden’s thanks. and add to them my own for your very flattering and kind words of farewell, and in bidding you good-bye, wish most heartily that prosperity and good fortune may @tend you and yours.

Swithin desired that he might be buried 1u the churchyard, and was so. A/fter- wards, however, when he was cancnized, some monks determited ta remove his remains to the chancel of the Minster, and appointed the 15th of July for the proceed- ing, but it rained so violently on that day, and for forty days after,that the design was regarded as heretical and blasphemous, and abandoned ; but, instead, a chapel was erected over his grave, at which many miracles are said to have been wrought.

A pleasant conceit is still noted in some part of England when it rainson the 15th of July, which supposes thas the good Bishop is ‘* christening the apples.”

aud running before a gale. We watched her until she got abreast of us, when they took in the foresail. Jusi and they went over. Mr. Smith (fo.ewau), the alarm to his fishermen, who imme- diately manned two boats and started for the wreck. On account of the strong wind blowing at the time they were unable ‘o raise a sail, and were forced, with great difficulty and danger, to row their boats against a heavy sea. The cool bravery and heroic courage displayed by those fishermen —Hubert, Thistle and Rogers, of George- town, and the other boat’s crew of Buc- touche—will léng be remembered by the people of West Cape. They reached the wreck just in time to save the lives of three fishermen belonging to Tignish (all that

shore, where they were kindly cared for.

The Liverpool quotation advanced to 403 64 on Thursday, but dropped to 40s yesterday.

Eces—Tho market continues dull and prices are weak. Eastern extras ore quoted at 14} to 15c, but only strictly fresh, which are scarce, will command this range. Very few sales of Northern or Provincial can be made at over 133+ per dozen. Western move slowly at 12 and 12}c per dozen, P. EK. Island at 13$¢ Fisu.—The receipts of mackerel for the week et Boston have been 2,866 bbls, in- elnding 319 bbls from foreign and 2,547 bbis, from domestic ports and fleet. Total mackerel lended by New England fleet up to date, 32,723 bbls against 50,032 bbls same time last year. The market has been quiet, but rec ipts are light and pricea are maintained. Sales of shere mackerel in fare lots at $4 to $4.25 for plain, and $4 50 to $3 75 per bbl for rimmed. A lot of 300 bols irspected so'd at $4.25 for medium Old Mack- erel are not as firm, and some lots could be bonght et $3.25 per bbl.
