At the Chicago International Hay and Grain show the grand championship for oats went to a yauug Western Ontario farmer named Gordon McArthur. The variety of oats which won him the mythical crown among com- petitors from all over North merica originated at the Central Experimental arm, Ottawa, and its worth was first proven there.

For years the Central Farm scientists worked to perfect a variety of oats resistant to rust. They thought they had the problem lick- ed, only to find that varieties of rust could multiply more quickly than niw resistant var- ieties of oats. Finally a variety was discovered which appeared to fill the bill, resistant to both stem and leaf rust. It was called Beaver and was released in small quantities only two years ago. The very next year a sample of this var- iety was shown at the Ottawa Valley _Seed Fair and won the championship for Thomas Barton, a brother of the Deputy Minister of Agricul- ture. It was a sample of this Beaver variety that took the judge's eye at Chicago and brought another grain crown to Canada. ’

Working quietly, and often without receiv- ing their share of the praise which goes to win- ners of big international shows such as that at Chicago, Dominion Experimental Farm plant scientists have done much to enrich the Domin- ion. Canada has won the wheat crown at Chi- cago 28 out of the 3i years the show has been held, and every winning variety originated on Dominion Experimental Farms. The some has been true of other grain awards which have came to this country. _

their question in the report issued the other day by Mr. Arthur MacNamara, Deputy Min- ister of Labor at Ottawa. Mr. MacNamara was detailing the time lost from strikes in Can-_ ada in‘the ten months ending October 3i.

The total loss for the ten months amount- ed to 4,462,730 man days and touched such in- dustries as rubber, steel, metals, automobiles, electrical supplies and lumber. Altogether, I33,- 3I7 workers were involved.

The numerous strikes of I946 may have solved some problems of wage levels. They have raised many more problems than they have solved—prob|ems of scarcities, problems of price levels, problems of inflation.

' The worker, who, by means of a strike, re- duces the supply of the commodity he produces and so contributes to increasing the selling price of it, loses even though he may gain a sub- stantial wage increase. lt has been demonstrat- ed rrrany times that in on inflationary race wages must always lag behind prices.

An Alarming Exodus

The problem of migration of a great, many young Canadians to the United States is more and more becoming one of growing concern to many persons in the Dominion who hold a deep and abiding interest for the future of their country. The latest among outstanding citizens to voice deprecation of the continuing exodus of our youth is Dr/Sidney Smith, brilliant presi- dent of Toronto University, and a native of the Maritimes.

Dr. Smith was addressing the delegates to the conference of Canadian Agencies Serving Youth the former Canadian Youth Commission, in Ottawa the other day and he spoke plainly on the problem, declaring "it would suggest that in the post-war period Canada already has failed to make her young people feel they be- long here." There is indeed a grave cause for concern in this southward trek and still the Dominion authorities in Ottawa do not seem to be perturbed about it, despite the fact that the press and interested’ public opinion across the country have for some time been deploring this continuing exodus and particularly of so many of our youthful citizens as well as numerous young men with professions.

The situation with regard to Spain is some- what complicated. Canada is not prepared to support at this time outside intervention in Spain "which might impede European recovery or revive in Spain the horrors and sufferings of civil war," Mr. Dana L. Wilgress, member of the Canadian delegation told the United Nations General Assembly. Speakin during a United Nations debate an Spain, lvtr. Wilgress said Canada "abhors" the record and present pol- icies of the Franco dictatorship in Spain. The Dominion "earnestly hopes that t_he Spanish people may be able to rid themselves of Franco by peaceful means and establish a democratic, responsible and enlightened administration." Mr. Wilgress, Canadian Ambassador to Russia, added that Canada "wholeheartedly" supported the second part of a United States resolution call- ing upon Franco to surrender his powers to a broadly-based provisional government.

Not only has the width of new cars been in- creased to more than six feet but the overall length has similarly increased and some of the smaller models are now longer than what was formerly regarded‘ as a "big" car. Tliis in- crease in size not only affects garage oper- ators, but street parking space as well. Not only will fewer cars be able to park along the length of the street, but the increased width of two lanes of parked cars will further reduce centre clearance for moving traffic. The New York Times recently cited the great improve- ment in that city since the institution of the city's curb parking ban and added: "When the flood of new automobiles at last reaches [the public we. will have an impossible situation.
