SKIN CANCER EASILY RECOGNIZED

It is not hsrd to understand why cancer of the stomach may be present without the patient know- ing it. If the patient does fee. an occasional ache or his appetite be- gins to fail, he usually does not consult his doctor: and even if he does consult his~doctor, he makes light of his symptoms and the doctor may not suspect cancer. However, nowQhat all cancer or- ganlzatlons are telling us how suc- cessfully early cancer can be treat- ed, the earliest sign of cancer of the stomach — lack of appetite. loss of weight - should make pa- tient and physician suspect can- cer in a patient of middle age. While patient and physician can be excused for not recognizing stomach cancer, there ls really no excuse why skin cancer should go untreated until serious damage, if not death, occurs.

In a special article on cutan- eous Qskln) cancer in the "Journal of the American Medical Associa- tion," sponsored by the Association and the American Cancer Society, Dr_ Henry E. Michelson, Minneap- olis, states that as a large percen- tage of cutaneous cancers occur on the exposed parts of the body there should be little difficulty in recognlging them. "The ease with which specimens for microscopic study can be obtained makes was! nosis easy.

Despite the fact that slclii cancer can be so easily recognized, thou- sands of skin cancers are missed because the simple microscopl test is not made. Delay in not recogniz- ing and treating early skin cancer allows the "innocent" growth to reach the stage where operation or other treatment will not. be of any help.

Another point is that even if a growth has been present for years. when we reach a. certain age it may develop into cancer. ‘One should never merely watch a tiny growth because it is small and not causing any trouble. BOSTON BROWN BREAD

In a good-sized mixing bowl. measure 2 c. sour milk or butter- milk snd 3-4 c. dark molasses. Dis- solve and add 1 tbsp. baking soda in l tbsp. warm water and add. Then beat in 1 c. coarse whole- Whflt flour. 1 c. coarse rys meal. 2 c. cornmeal and l tsp. salt, m. vide into S oiled pint-sized cans or moulds. Cover closely and steam l 1-2 hours. To do this, put several folds of nqvspaper in a large deep kettle and stand the brown bread molds on it. Add boiling water to 2-3 the depth of the molds. Put on s. lid and boil steadily the re- quired time. If necessary to add more water, it should be boiling not cold, for cold water would stop the steaming for a few minutes, and cause the brown bread to fall and become heavy. The newspaper is used in the kettle to raise the cans from the bottom so the boll- ing water can circulate underneath and steam the bread evenly.
