The Modern Babylon, and the

Sabbath.

The growth of London in all directions, continues marvellous. A number of towns have sprung up within the iast three or four Not long ago North End Fulham | wasa rural district of fields and market | gardens. Tho Underground Railway open- | ed a new live to Hammersmith, with a station at the north end, and to-day the surrounding area is covered\with streets of well-built houses at high rents. Similarly, at the other end ot London, increased facilities of locomotion by railway or tram ear have led to the erection of many hun- dreds of houes in South Bermondsey or Rotterhithe. The same progress goes on steadily at Edmonton, on the north, and at Sydenham, on the south of London. Talk- ing of the po} ulace, the London correspon- dent of the Montreal Witness makes some interesting statements. They are not very dry, and the digesting of them will do noharm. They relate to the question of the moral and religious instruction of the people. Whilea iresh Toronto, or some 80,000 souls, are being added to the city every year, their is no adequate increase being made in church accommodation. Dr. Kennedy spoke on a recent Sabbath, of visiting new districts at the east end of from 500 to 1,000 houses, where not one, place of worship is being erected, or is known to be intended. Soit comes to pass that the necessary provision for fifty-eight per cent. of the pepulation is by no means to be found. It does not exceed thirty-two per cent. Even this is not the worst, for a very large proportion of this accommoda- tion is in places where it is not accessible to the masses. Consequentiy a large portion of these seats. are never filled. Some of them are in city churches, where the local- ity is deserted on Sundays. Others belong to denominations which are locally weak, or which are unduly crowding one another. Meanwhile the masses of, the people seem more and more to be deserting the churches. In Walworth in a little district ef 2,600 souls, an enquirer found only 100 attending public wosship ; 40 of these being communicants. Putting it at the very low- est, and allowing that nearly half a given population cannot attend public worship, there remains about a million persons in ‘“smaller London” who might attend, but do not.

WHERE ARE THEY ?

If your readers could traverse London with me, says the Witness correspondent the answer would soon be found. Come first into Houndsditch ; where the ‘‘ dogs of Jews,” asour fathers uncharitably termed them, have resided from time immemorial, and where they still most do congregate. On Sunday they are especially in force in the great marts for second hand clothes, and all through the hours of the forenoon thousand of the lower working class crowd to them to iaake cheap purchases of cast- off garments. Coats costing from half a crown each, or trousers for a shilling a pair, may be purchased in Houndsdich, and a melancholy array of dilapidated women haggle for a sixpenny petticoat or a vamped-up pair of gaiter-boots. Many hundreds of the men of the lower ranks of laborers gather at the bird-fan- cier’s shops in Shoreditch and Bethnal Green, where they discourse together learn- edly and lovingly of piping bulfinches or pouter pigeons. Many of these rough naturalists spend a large portion of their earnings on these feathered pets. Could you go to their homes, you would find them sjualid and bare, with slatternly wife and sharp, hungry-looking children passing the Sabbath in idle gossip.or rough play. The afternoon conres, and another class, a little higher than these, will be found streaming along the hizhways and roads leading eut oftown. East, west, north and south they wend their way to grassy hill and breezy common. In the town itself myriads crowd the parks, many solacing conscience it may be, by standing for ten minutes to listen to the wayside preacher, who full of zeal— if not of kaowledge—draws a crowd around him by the loudness of his tones and the extravagance of his gestures. And here and there amongst the out-door stream, the travelling photographer, sets up his camera and his darx tent, ready to ‘‘take’ a pair of cockney sweathearts for threepence. The more fashionable streets have their crowds of saunterers, and Oxford street, Regent street and Piceadiliy are occupied by jostling crowds, while the

which London afford, are availed of by multitudes. When night comes on the great worshipping crowd of modern Baby- fon is seen at its worst. Then comes forth the army that has been lazily sleeping away the effects of last night’s debauch ; and once more the tavern and the gin palace are thronged ; aud—literally—a roaring trade. One need not ask ‘‘ Where do the non- church-goers spend their Sunday ?” One's ohly marvel is ‘‘ Where co the church- goers come from?’ Yet if you turn out of the stream into very many of the churches, chapels or halls of service yeu will find them. crowded to overflowing. Hundreds were unable to get in at Mr. Spurgeon’s last Sunday. It mast not be forgotten that the long list of Sabbath-

T this most festive season, {4 when every one is engaged in trying to please, when stores are ransacked for their prettiest treasures and their cheapest stock, in order to make Christ- mas as joyous as in Olden Times, we are offering our quota to this end. Our Christmas Cards are of the most varied character, and indicate, by the way in which they go off, that the 25th will soon be here. —

We take this opportunity to place other goods of a more use- ful and not less pleasing nature, before our friends. Our reduc- tions in Mantle Cloths, Dress Materials, Fur Goods, &c., must be very opportune when “ every- body is presenting everybody else” with something—a sacque, a dress,.or a muff. We have on hand a large and very attractive stock which will, we have no doubt, meet the requirements and the approbation of the Christmas loving public.

The good cheer which Christ- mas is said to bring is not to be found in the dregs of the wassail bowl, or in a pint of brandy punch, but in the good warm clothing which a benevo- lent public are bestowing on.the poor. It is in trying to please others we enjoy the greatest pleasure, and any one engaged in the work of “ giving to the poor” or to their own people, cannot do better than give a call at 83, where, in so large a stock, every one must find the very article they require, and that at a very low price.

Gentlemen will find it the best economy to come to us for Overcoats and Ulsters, of which we have a few left. In our at- tempt to place a good Overcoat ata small price, we have suc- ceeded--every article sold having given complete satisfaction. We have just got in new Linders and Drawers at prices to suit the times.

A Cabul despatch states that Daoad Shah, who wes the Commander-in-Chief of the Afghan army, and who was sent by the Ameer to quiet the revolt during the mas sacre of the British at the Embassy, has been arrested.

The ‘* Times’” Cabul despatch, dated the 15th, says the most difficult position of the enemy was gallantly carried yesterday. A later one states that our troops lost a position they had taken.

Gen Tytler attacked and captured Zaura, which was stored with grain of allof the Zailukht tribe. The enemy left a large number of dead on the field. The British loss was four wounded.

The Vicervy of India telegraphs to-day : —‘* Cominunications with Gen. Roberts are interruptea.” Daoud Shah, formerly com- mander of the Afyhan army, has been pro- fessing te co-operate with the British since the occupation of Cabul, and his arrest in- dicates-recent treachery or the discovery of pertidy in the slaughter of the British Em- bassy at Cabul,

Tue Ottawa Herald says that it is the in- tention of the Government, some years hence, if not earlier, to erect a large and handsome building in the city for the Geological Muse- um. In the meantime it is necessary that ac- commedation should be previded for it, and hence the purchase, or intended purchase of the Clarendon Hotel. The opening of the Museum will add some forty families to the population, which must be regarded as an item of importance.
