In last week's notes we mention- ed that 25,000 silver fox pelts would be offered at. Denver, Colorado, by the New York Auction Company last week. The figures were incor- rect in the fur trade publication from which we obtained the item- they should have read 2.500. Well. a- bout 70 per cent of them changed hands. The collection was mostly full silvers and while there was some resistance ho the price asked for the best quality goods, the ranges below that grade sold well. Arthur C. Prentiss. Manager of the Denver branch. could give no price comparison with previous sales held tn New York. but. he said the col- iectlon was entirely new and mark- eted earller than other places be- cause furs in the Rocky Mountain region prime up early.

Among the interested onlookers at the auction were some 150 breed- ers from the various sections of Colorado and nearby states who had fox pelts consigned to the auction. Very few of them had ever witness- ed a fur auction before and its var- ious ramifications were most- inter- esting to them. They found it also on enjoyable interlude from the anxious work of getting their foxes ready for peltlng and the on-comtng breeding season.

George H. Mayers of Lampson, Farser dc Huth, Inc., and Albert Tanner, a fur dealer. were judges at the 4th annual exhibition of the Eastern Ontario Fur Breeders’ As- sociation at Smith's Falls. Mr. Mayer's judged silver and platinum fox and mink and Mr. Tanner nut- rla. One of the interesting features in connection with the exhibition was the fiushion show put on by R. J. Devlin Company. Limited. Ontar- io retail furrlers. ‘The garments were enthielv of Canadian raised furs.

An alarming number of distemper and other contagious fox diseases is being reported from many sec- tions of the United States. In order to sell a pelt or iur of any kind in Quebec, one has to 121k‘: out a permit and now the government of Quebec has passed an order-ln-councll asking the Do- minion government through the Governor-General-in-Councll to de- clare the federal law forbidding the export of furs fiorn one province to another without a provincial per- mit, effective immediately 1n the Province of Quebec. By doing this Quebec avails itself of the proviso of the law that it may be de- clared ln force on request of one .. nine provinces.

The above is rather disconcerting news and as we interpret it would mean that pelts shipped to the province of Quebec from here would be Subject. to tax similar to the pro- cessing tax which must be paid on each silver fox pelt sent for tan- ning in Quebec. For Lnstance if you want to get a pelt mode up the fur- rler here sends it to Quebec to be tanned, which costs $1.00. Then if the pelt is valued at $30. the Que- bec government collects $3.60, and. added to that would of course be the express charges and cost of sending the money back to Mon- treal. Ranchers are starting to pelt. They have been getting pretty itchy the past week and the few cold days have set them going. In our Company ranch we have token off some pelts which are mostly prime on the skin side. We find the color ls generally good but that the pelts are a bit feathery. and believe it Wflllld be well if others having the same difficulty would hold pelting off for a week or two weeks or more of cold weather. Most of our adults —which were fed very lightly -aro late in furring up, are holding their color well and there should be some fairly good pelts among them ii- round the 15th of December. The foxes we pelted were durks, med. iums and ones having a tendency to be sour or off-color and some naturally short-furred stuff that we, fltllred would not improve,
