The Belted Kingfisher is a typical breeding bird on the Island. Its raucous call can often be heard near streams, ponds, and coastal areas where it is hunting for small fish. When you see it fly off with a fish rather than back to its perch, you can sometimes track its flight to the exposed bank in which it has excavated its nesting burrow. A small number of these kingfishers overwinter on the Island using small open streams, open estuaries, causeways, and other areas where fast water, springs, or turbulence keeps the water open and they can catch food.
