Combien faut-il donc que nous soyons petits, pour croi- re, malgré tout, que la terre est immense, ou ce quiest plus ri- dicule, que nous sommes im- menses sur la terre ! Tout de même, quels efforts chez les p'us petits d'entre nous, pour ressembler aux plus grands ! quels tourments chez les grands, pour empêcher les petits de se grandir ! Ceux-ci veulent amé. liorer leur sang par des allian- es en haut lieu ; ceux-là, et comme de raison, les rois avant tous les autres, affectent de prévenir la dégénérescence du leur, en ne le mariant qu'à un sang de même nature, c’est-à- dire royal autant que possible. Partout, toujours, du travail, de la peine, pour paraitre plus que ce qu'on est. Afin de péremptoi- rement démontrer la supériorité d'une origine, Ja transcendance d'une noblesse, dans les hautes cours, comme dans les basses, on prend des allures olympien- nes, on met en œuvre la magie d'un plumage brillanté, on fait …...la roue, quoi !

L'homme se targue d'avoir vu le jour sous des lam- bris dorés, d'avoir eu pour té- moins de son baptème à grands frais préparé, tout ce que le mi- rage d’une grande fortune peut attirer de courtisans ; Jésus re- fuse jusqu’à i'honneur de naître dans une maison ; à lasoie et l'or, il préfère la paille d’une é- table abandonnée. La présence officieuse des grands semble moins lui plaire que celle du bœuf et de l'âne refugiées là, contre les froids d'hiver, et pour se réchauffer, il ss contente de demander à ces paisibles ani- maux l'aumône de leur haleine.

À notre nature, il répugne de s’humilier seus la domination d'autrui ; à Jésus, il sera doux de vivre trente ans sous Ja tu- telle d’un modeste charpentier. Nous fuyons le profane vulgai- re ; il le recherche ; il trouvera ses délices dans la compagnie de tout ce qu'il y a d'ignorants de pauvres et d'infirmes. Quel- ques pêcheurs seront ses dis: ples ; les petits enfants du peu: ple, ses meilleurs amis. Made- leine elle-même, Madeleine la pêcheresse, ne sera pas rejetée. Parce qu'elle a tout simplement aimé, cette femme plus que per- due, Jui, le Maitre, il va l'ac- cueillir et lui pardonner, au giand scandale de ses fidèles, comme de raison.

Encore aujourd’hui, si Jésus revenait sur la terre, je ne dis

pas pour convertir des infidèles, mais simplement pour remettre

à l’ordre et forcer à la vraie pratique de sa loi ceux qui se vantent d’être siens, je doute fort qu'il n'eût à subir, de la main même de ces derniers, un second supplice, tant il déran- gerait les petits bonheurs et les petites affaires d’une infinité d’entre eux ! WILFRID LAROSE

The leading number, “The Desired of All Nations,” by A. F. X. Emmett, is an exquisite essay on the Holy Night, illus- trated by page reprodu:tions of the works of famous artists.

Herbert M. Sylvester contri- butes, “A Morsel in Season” a composite picture oi Christmas tide and its influence on rich and poor, ‘each heart making its own music.”

Other distinctively Christmas features are, ‘The Maestro’s Gift at Navidad,” by Mary F. Nixon ; “Christmas Day,” by Rev. D A. Hanley ; Christmas poems, by Julia Teresa Butler, Gertrade Menard and William Hopkins.

There are five short stories ali treating of the great feast. Katharise Tynan Hinkson tells an 1rish ghost story *s only she can tell it, and makes the spirit “walk” on Christmas Eve. John Austin Schetty contribu‘es a fanciful sketch entitled “John Duncan's Clock,’ which ticks out a practical lesson en goodwill to men. “On Christmas Night,” by Annie G. Murray, is a touch- ing reverie recaliing scenes in a lonely woman’s life. “The Pos- tage Stamp Peopie,” by Claude M. Girardeau is a story out of the ordinary.

Readers of Denahoe’s who de- rived such pleasure from read- ing an Easter sketch by Susan L. Emery, will turn eageriy to the compauion story in the De- cember number, “The Christmas Vision of the Assistant Organ- ist a beautiful spiritual con- ception of the invisible hosts as- sembling within the church to pay homage on Holy Night.

A paper to which much :in- terest attaches is ‘“‘O’Connell and Derrynane,” by James T. O’- Brien. 1t is superbly illustrated from photographs taken by Je- remiah Curtin, translator of ‘Quo Vadis,” who presented them to Donahoes with the message, ‘‘ltook them myself, and the taking was a labor of love en my part.”

Subjects of religious, political and national importance are treated in “Costly 1ndifference” by Rev. J. T. Roche ; ‘The Fashoda Questioa ;” “Our Duty to th: Philippines ;” and the Recent New York Election.”

Under ‘Men and Things,” the editor, Henry Austin Adams, M À., makes pertinent comment on various topics.

The cover is an original de- sigu by a New York artist, and is thoroughly in keeping with the christmas season.
