FUNERAL YESTERDAY-The fun- eral of the late Ernest E. Parkman was held under I. O. O. F. auspices from his late residence, Parkdale a/partments, yesterday after noon at 3.30 o'clock. Service at the house at 3 o'clock was conducted by Rev. Dr. Ramsay, assisted by Rev. J. M, MacLeod, who also conducted ser- vice at the grave. The pail bearers were: Messrs Blois Andrew, mnest seller, Michael Campbell, Robt. N. lviacNeill, Edgar Heart: and David Bethune. Tile late _M.r. Parkman learn ed the carpenter trade with the firm oi Parkman 8s Crabbe, and after serv" ing his apprenticeship removed to Boston where he remained for a, short time. On his return he was emplwed on the erection of Falconwood In- iinnary, after which he entered bus- iness with his father. Among his contracts were the plant oi Bruce Stewart do Co., the Rena McLean Hospital and several dwellings in the city. Among these Ere the Ritz apartments on Upper Prince Street, the Rochford on Pownal St. and the Parkdale, where he residtfl. Although in failing health for some time. Mr. Parkman was taken ser- iously ill about three weeks ago, and gradually growing weaker passed away. i-le ia survived by his wife and by his daughter, Mrs. Eva Fisher, Halifax. and his father Mr. Edward C. Parkman.

The death occurred in this city yesterday morning at 1.30 oi/ John S. Pierce, a prominent young busin- essman after a lingering illness. The late Mr. Pierce was a Director and Vice President of the well known firm of Prowse Bros Ltd, which he entered as a boy and by his courteous and obliging disposition and strict at- ‘ " to businaa- won a_ place Hmong the loading business men oi the community. .

Born at Brackley Point sold, a m of the Jute Mir. and Mm. William Pierce, the deceased after receiving his education at the local achooi spent a short time on the farm beforg removing to tho city, where he. en- tered the amploy of Prowse Bloc,

' He remained in the capacity of salesman with the firm for fifteen years, when he with others organized the Charlottetown Selling Agencies, and whom he “presented as traveller for ten years, when he again became Biiwiflied With Prowse Bros in 1925.

After the death of the late Mr. LE. Prowse the firm was re-orgauized in 1920 when Mr. Pierce was appointed to the responsible positions of Direc- tor and Vice ‘Hesident. which office he filled with satisfaction to the staff and customers.

Oi a cheerful and jovial dLsposi- tion Mr. Pierce was an excellent sales man and had the happy facility of remembering the names of the num- erous customers with whom became in contact. . . . _ A. There is indeed a real ieelin, of humiliation in my heart as I compare my weaknesses with the strength and learning of these pastors from whose hands the Crosier oi this diocese was passed to mine. I coma here toiove you, to accept your joys and sorrows and to do my best among you as the chief pastor of your souls. He considered that in view of this fact the liquor could not be said to be the property or Gliiiihi. and that the Crown had failed to make out their case. The trial Jildke stated that he did not regard the matter in this way. The Prohibition Act would have no beflrihs as applied to the criminal law. That was used in regard to the Prohibition Act only,

Lawyer Leaves Court Boom

Mr. Johnston then opened the case for the defense. In laying tho ca” before the Jury. he stated that it rested on identification. The Court objected to some oi his remarks on the ground that he was reviewing the ‘evidence oi the Crown witn¢gg_ Mr. Johnston then left the court room saying he refused to go on with the case. -

Mr. L. G. Lewis, the other lawyer for the defense continued with the case and called his first witness, George Gallant, to go up on the stand.

Witness testified that on the night of April 8th he was in the house of James Grady. listening w the radio‘ between 7 p. m. and 9 p. m. and Roy was with him. They went down town later and returned about 10.30 p. m.

Cross-examined by Mr, Mccuuum, witness said he did not know why Placide Gallant had brought this in- formation azelnlt him. Asked by the Court what he had to say about the incident that Placide Gallant had told of the hold-up on the night of April 8th, he replied that he knew nothing about it.

"Yes." ,

Roy Grady, the next witness, test. ified that he had not known Piacide Gallant until he saw him in the Court Room at the preliminary hear- ing. He had not been on that road that winter. His evidence in regard to his whereabouts on April 8th tal- lied with those of previous witness.

Cross-examined by Mr. McCaliun-l, he denied making a certain state- ment. which Mr. McCalluln read from the evidence which witness had given in the Prohibition Court before Mr. Tweedy. v

We are gathered here this BIt8f-' noon for the purpose of formally opening the Provincial sanatorium; but first, I think, you will be inter- ested in a brief outline of the pro- ceedings which led to the building and equipping of this institution.

On, March, 21st, 192B, at 1 p. m. a special meeting of the Provincial Executive of the Women's institutes was ‘held forthe discussion oi the provision of a Sanatol-ium in Prince Edward Island. It was decided to wait upon the Government to ask their oo-operation. A resolution was drawn up and was sympathetically met with by the Government. Cir- cular letters were sent out to iii branch institutes by the Executive
