THE GUERNSEY COW AS ADAIRY COW.

di: is notmy purposete compare the Guerosey cow with that of any other breed of cattle. Each breed has ite champions. Some men will makea success of handling one reed of cattle, while they would make yaost Jamentable failures with any other.

My purpose is to place before you 2 few of tbe many good sterling qualities of the Guernsey cow as a pure bred, and as a

grade. Asa pure bred, she represents so

muny dollars and ceots to any man who has any to dispose of. There is at present a demanddar in excess of the supply. The ‘Herd Register” says: while the number of herds of Guernseys in the United States is constantly increasing, stil! there will not be enough registered cattle in a centurr ¢o supply the dairyman’s demand tor cows” hie demand is brought about by dairy-~ men demanding a strictly dairy cow, and a dairy bred one as well.

Whe Guernsey cow bas been bred for centuries strictly for dairy purposes. In the year 1789 the legislature of the Island of Guernsey passed an act prohibiting the importation of any kiad of jive cattle to the Island. This Jaw has been strictly en- forced up to the present date. No live cow heifer, calf, bull, or ox, has been allowed to land on toe Island since thatact was cng Thies ensures the purity of the

eed, and has iutensified the blood of the Guernsey so much, that the Guernsey hull used uponjcows of any other breed stamps his progeny, in every instance,with the color and dairy charagteristics of the Guernsey breed. The prevailing color of the Guerneey is deep rich orange with some white.

The Guernsey cow, in form, is a rangy, deep animal with plenty of udder develop ment,

The Guernsey cow has a well-~sbaped udder extending well up forward and is brought up weil behind with good-sized well placed teats.

The Guernsey cow is strictly a dairy animal and has the true wedge-like dairy form. She is well-developed through the heart aud with well-sprung _ ribs gives plenty of room for vigorous vital organs.

Her milk veins are long, large, and toriuous.

Her skin is thin with a delicate mellow texture and of a deep golden color.

She is of good size, ranging in weight from 800 to 1000. Mature bulls weighing from 1000 to 1800 lbs.

The Guernsey cow is gentle, contented and not easily disturbed.

She is a healthy animal, long-lived and a good milker at ar advanced age.

‘Ibe Guernseya have strong coastitutions, with the ability to digest liberal rations. Wherever introduced the Guernsey is re- eognized as a healthy, strong, vigorous cow, able to assimilate large quantities of focd into rich milk of the deepest golden hae.

She isa persistent milker. The con- tiauity of her yield and her long useful- ness are two of her most valuable traits. This is most dasirable in a dairy cow.

The Guernesy cow givee the richest eolored milk of that of any other breed of eattle. A Mr. Ledyard says the milk of one Guernsey mixed with that of fifteen grade Shortherns gave a fine tinge of color to the united products. This is also very desirable in dairy cows. The milk and butter of the Guernsey retains ita color long inio the winter whiie tbat of most other breeds usually loses its color within one month after they ceare to have grass feed. ‘The deep golden yellow color ofthe Guernsey milk and butter cannot he equalled by any other breed.

The Guernsey cow matures early, many heifers dropping their calves at 18 and 20 months old. The Guernsey cow is a heavy milker, some of them giving over 12,000 Ibs per year.

The Gueensey cow’s special place in the dairy world is for the production of choice butter, and the richest colored milk and creaw, aod ov these lines the. Guerrsey is equalled by few and excelled by none.

Owing to the prepotency of the Guern-

| sey bull he is able, when used on cows of | other breeds, to transmit to his progeny | the good dairy @x4 itis of the Guernsey. Lhe Hon. Lewis F. Allen. of Buffalo, N | Y., editor of the Shorthorn Herd Book, ‘writes as follows after six years’ ex ' perience :

“My own experieace thus far ia the use of grade Guernsey cows, sired ky Guern- sey bulle on high grade shorthora cattle, is altogether eatisfactary. My first grade Guernser heifers were cul ved in 1882, and continuously on in eveoy succeeding year until now. Sol have et present several three-quarter bred in milk. Altogether J have some 100 head. Seventy are from , Guerneey sires, thoroughbred bulls Fifty regular milch cows are now used in my butter dairy. The Guerusey heifers asually bring their first calves at from 20 to 26 months old, and of ali those there have been but two or three accidental failures to prove first-class milkers, giving within a month or two after drop- ping their first calves, 24 to 40 pounds of rich milk per day. All of them have large, eqnare, udders, sizeable teats, and are easy and gen‘le milkers ”

Mr. Morrison, of Atkinson, reports that in 1893 his herdof 40 grade Guernsey cows made 12,009 Ibe, butter, with no grain feed in summer, and only 20 tons of bran in winter. This isan average of 200 lbs of butter per cow.

Mr. Houston, of Ranney, one of the beet known dairymen in Wisconsin, writes :

“I am a thorough convert to the Guern- seycows. Andwhy? They aredocile, large in frame, have plenty of muscle and bone, bave the looks of a farmer’s cow, have good sized teats, color their product better than any other breed, their calves are large, andtak’ngall in all, they a:e the most desirable asa family or dairy cow—the cow which always finds a ready sale at remunerative prices,”

Mr. Houston bred the cow “Houston” that leads the herd at the Minnesota Ex- perimental Station. This cow was nine years old in 1892, and her record at the station for the eubsequent years is as follows :

Tn 1892 she gave 5936 Ibs of milk which made 358 Ibs of butter.

In 1893 she gave 6976 Ibs. of mi made 428 lbs. of butter.

In 1894 she gave 5952 ibs. of milk which made 356 lbs of butter.

In 1895 she yave 67/00 Ibs, which made 404 lbs. of butter.

In 1896 she guve 8897 lbs. of milk which made 512 Ibs, of butter.

Another one half bred gurnsey cow, “Ramona,” owned by the Penuyslvania Experimental Station, has proved herself a most persistent milker. giving from No- vemler, 1895 to November 1896, or ve- tween calves 10,351 of milk which made 5274 Ibs of batter. This record was made without any foreing, her feed being the ordinary ration of the herd. She is a half biood guerneey.

At the Bay State Fair, held at Worces- ter, Mass, in 1896, the grade Gurnsey cow, Gurnsey Maid, won sweeptakes in the in the butter test. She made in one day on the fair grounds 2 lbs.50z. of butter from 37 to 13} 02 of milk. The third prize was also won by a guernsey grade. She gave 41 lbs. 9} oz. of milk which 1 ib 14 0z. of butter. The second prize was also won by a pure bred gurnsey cow. Eight Jerseys and Holsteins uleo competed

The herd of twenty grade Guernseys owned by Mr. Heller, Calumetville, Wis.,

roduced during the year an average per cow of 7120 Ibe. milk which made 3313 ibs. butter.

Many other cases could be cited but this is sufficient to illustrate what the grade Guerney cao do at the pail. So farasl have been abieto learn the Guersey bul! produces good results whens crossed with the Jersey Ayreshire, Shorthorn and native cow.

I have had twin heifers out of grade Ayrsbires and got by a pure Guernsey bull that gave me 14

lbs each of butter per week with second calf. I had one half-bred Guernsey, whose dam was “Just Cow” also with her; second calf, on winter feed which gave me 15 lbs 84 ozs. of butter in7 days.

I have been breeding grade Guerneeys since 1886 and in all that time I have never had a heifer who, when she came in milk, did not surpass her dam in yield, both of milk and butter. I have always found them to be good large roomy catile, able to take their place with any other breed in roughing it and producing a large

highly coloured mess of milk on ordinary every day feed. They are not daioty feeders. They are

ever ready to take anything you give them, but at the same time are very res— pensive to ood feed,returniog value in the pail for value fed them.

I have never been able to breed enouga grade guernsey cows to meet the market demand. They are good lookers, quiet, contented, good feeders,respond readily to

with well placed good sized ‘eats, are easily milked and in my opinion, and the opinion of all others who have handled them, are, without doubt, the best dairy or family cow in existence today.

It is pretended by the. Government orgas that the United States military expedition into the Yukon district is not really a qilitary expedition after all. This is all wery well, asa defence for Mr. Sifton’s action in agreeing to facilitate the affair. Bet it ia utterly uotrue. The expediticn is conducted by tha Wastingion War Department. Senator Templeman, the new acquisition tothe Upper House, is equally emphatic. e ays, ip the Victoria Times, that the ru- mors of starvation at Dawson are false, and asks what there really is behind this expedition. “Is it the intention of the American Government to force this reliet expedition into the Klondike for the pur- poxe planting a stake that shall never be pulled up, just as Ru-sia acquires territory she covets under plausible pretexits of temporary occupation, but where forever Russian garrisons remair? We do not say tbat the United States has this end iv view; although, considering the lengths to which her Goverhmezt is now going, what may we not infe:?” ‘Is avy madness too great for this phenomenon among modern Government:?” Mr. Tempioman adds that the whole thing {8 a@ @+wsright in- sult to Canada, a gross and unwarrantable insult, which only a Government devoid of diplomatic kncw'edge and utterly reck- leas of consequences could dream of per- petrating.” The expedition, the Senator concludes, shculd be stopped at the fron tier, the military disarmed, and the sup plies charged duty to the full limit of the tariff. “That might serve to teach the American Government that its insolence it not appreciated north of the line.”

This is pretty strong ianguage. We be- lieve, however, that the position is sound. Canada is large enovgli and stroug enougn to attend to her own business, and certaiu- ly she ought not to permit foreign troops to enter and to occupy any portion of her territory.

An ex!raordinary case is reported from the Buffalo State Hospital. Three years and two months ago William Gipp, then 20 years of age shot and killed bis mother and dangerously wounded his father. Some days later ths young man was found by the police wandering around in an appareotiy demented condition. He was taken to police headquarters and there fe}] into silence. Not recovering, he was taken to the State Hospital, where he has since remained ina etate of coms. Food was supplied to him by the hospital attendants. Saturday morning Gipparose from his bed and walked asross the room and asked in a dazed manner where he was, od asked what had happened. He is improving rapidly and the physicians ia the hospital say he will undoubtedly recover. The case is looked upon as a wonderful one.
