A Trip to the Queen City.

I left Charlottetown on Saturday, the 7th via Point du Chene and Moncton, lying over at Campbelton on Sunday where we attended a large and very inter- meeting of the Railway Gospel Meeting. Passing through Montreal and (Juebec, we reached Toronco on,W ednesday morning. The National Division opened hat 10 o'clock, about 150 delegates being present from P, E. Island on the east, Winnipeg on the west, and Tennessee on the south. The weather was beautiful. A grand reception was given to the visiting delegates by Mayor Clarke and E. King Dodds, on behalf of the city. Every dele- gate was presented witha beautiful badge, which was worn on the street. I was taken by one fellow for an Orangeman. Next day being the 12th the city appeared to be com-

Adjutant-General Powell says the turn out of corps for the annual drill this year has proved successful, and the results of the practice gained in the departments of transport and subsistence are very satisfac- tory. The various organizations in the different districts have assembled at and moved off from their company and battal-
lion headquarters and returned to them with a regular ty and freedom from casual- ties which can only be reasonably expected from corps having more than twelve days’ training biennially. Indeed, considering how difficult it is to maintain efficiently
those rural corps which are only pern.itted to drill for pay each alternate year, the re- sults, he says, are astonishing.
—At the Department of Agriculture it has been ascertained that the number of Icelandic settlers in the Northwest is about 8,000, or a tenth of tae population of Ice- land. The population of Gimli, the first Icelandic settlement, is rapidly increasing, and settlements are being opened up along the west shore of Lake Winnipeg. Large numbers of Mormons are coming by way of Fort McLeod to the s« ttlement in the Athabaska District. In regard to the Scotch crofters, they have adapted themselves t« their surroundings in Manitoba, and the cheering reports they have sent out will, it is believed in the department, have the effect of causing an emigration of settlers from the North of Scotland.
—Maine is coming to the front as a divorce state. With a popuiation about half that of Quebec, during 1887 its courts granted no less than 512 legal separations of man and wife, but 69 of which were on what is recognized as Scriptural ground. Desertion, cruelty, intoxication and failure to support, made up the majority of the causes alleged. This is not a happy state of affairs, and in- dicates a disregard for the sacredness of the marriage tie that has worked and will work serious evil to the country. In 382 cases the woman was the complainant, and it is somewhat of a reflection on the administration of the prohibitory law that in 77 instances intoxication (habitual, it is presumed), should be the reason alleged.
— We are in receipt of a sample copy of the Progress of St. John, N. B.—an ex- cellent sample it is, at once lively and first- class. Among the articles is one on educa- tionists, including Dr. Anderson and Mr. Montgomery. Of Dr. Anderson it says:
‘* Dr. Anderson has done much to arouse interest in the public schools of the Province, and his influence and devotion has been felt, and is being made apparent in the schools of Prince Edward Island Students from his classes generally gain high honors throughout the Maritime Provinces, and two of his pupils have won successively the Gilchrist scholar- ship. In December last, his former students tendered him a banquet to signalize the com- pletion of a quarter century's educational work on the Island, accompanying it by an address and a handsome present. Just pre- vious to that he had been invited to become one of the editors of the Educational Review. He is at present the President of the Prince Edward Island Teachers’ Convention.”
Of Mr. Montgomery it says :—
‘*Mr. Montgomery, in his administration of the Island school laws, has introduced many effective changes, quietly and gradually, but persistently. To him is due the credit of putting into harmonious and successful work- ing order the legislative enactments of 1877. To do so more thoroughly, he recommended the amalgamation of the provincial college and Norma! School, and outlined a bill for the legislature for that purpose, which became law in 1579. The efiect of this change has been to secure better academic training for teachers, and to concentrate the teaching force of both institutions. Mr. Montgomery alzo made the securing of high school privi- seges a matter of general competition amongst the school sections on such a basis as to re- move jealousy and promote healthful rivalry. He also tro iuced and succeeded in carrying out a unif wm system of provincial examina- tions, of two grades—the junior examination admitting pupils to the junior department of the Normal Schoo!, and the senior admitting to the intermediate departments. In conclu. sion, it may be stated that Mr. Montgomery was largely instrumental in organizing a Pro-

perhaps, nota new one. A prominent M. L. C. from Cardigan appeared early on the ground, and did a flourishing business in the distribution of circulars containing the report of a very celebrated speech delivered by the hon. gentleman himself in the Legislative Council! last session, on Recipro- city with the United States. It was re- ceived by the young crowd with evident
amusement. The hon gentleman was well pleased—and if the great speech was not
read—the loss was not too great, consider- ing the number of other great ‘attractions. This passed off very orderly, very friendly
-one of those gatherings which shows that the time is fast approaching when the lion

Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court.
Daniel Steele, larceny from the store of W. F. Carter, Upper Queen Street. In this case it appears that shortly before vo’clock last Steele entered

the store through the rear entrance, and going behind the counter pulied out the
eash drawer and took therefrom $10, re- turning the same way he had entered. At the time of the theft Mr. Carter was standing in the front door watching what was going on upun the street, one of the clerks wis sitting behind the counter, and another, who was coming intothe shop through the rear hall, saw the thief rushing out with his booty.
Officers Cameron and Bradley arrested Steele at Dawson’s corner afew minutes after the robbery, and they state that although he had evidently been drinking he was well able to walk and had his senses about him. They searched him and found two &5 notes and some cents in his pocket. Steele said, in defence, that he was intoxi- cated yesterday evening, and he sup- posed he must have entered the store and taken the money when he did not realize what he was doing. A sentence of four months’ imprisonment was imposed.
Daniel Steele, larceny from the store of John Darrach, Richmond Street. In this case it appears that yesterday evening, be- tween six and seven o'clock, while the family were at tea, Steele entered the shop and tock some thirty or forty cents from the cash drawer. Mr. Darrach came in before Steele had time to leave with his booty, and by way of excuse Steele asked him for some tobacco. Mr. Darrach did not like the looks of Steele and examined the cash drawer to see if any money had been taken therefrom, and discovering
his loss at once accused Steele of the theft. On Steele being searched the miss- ing money was found in his pockets.
Macdonald. Mr. Dariach, after he had got his money, eject- ed Steele from the store.
Steele had the same excuse in this case as in the previous one. He was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment.

BRILLIANT BANQUET IN CAPITAL--OUR PROGRESS

The twenty first anniversary of the Can- adian Confederation was celebrated at Lon- don on the 12th instant, by a grand banquet. There was a brilliant company, including Sanford Fleming, Sir Adam Wilson, Pre- mier Mowat, Baron Knutsford, Lord Lans- downe, Sir Charles Tupper, Mr. Dalton McCarthy, M. P., Mr. A. F. Mclntyre, Mr. Donald Macmaster, and Mayor Me- Leod Stewart of Ottawa presided,
After the Queen and the Prince and and Princess of Wales had been proposed by the chairman, the toast ‘ Our Mother Country” was proposed by Mr. Dalton Me- Carthy who said that Canada wanted Im- perial Federation. Lord Knutsford, Col- onial Secretary, in replying, testified to the deep and keen interest felt by the Govern- ment respecting the welfare and progress of the Dominion. Regarding Imperial Federation he said that he was quite sure of one thing, that any such proposal must come from the colonies and not from Eng- land, which would give it the utmost attention.
Replying te the toast, ‘* Our Governor- General,” Lord Lansdowne expressed his immense pleasure at finding a Canadian oasis in the London wilderness and the old faces of Canadian friends. He dwelt on the absolute single-heartedness and patriot- ism of the politicians of Canada, however differing in their opinions. The discussion how to reform the present constitution of Canada would do no harm but good if it were properly conducted.
Responding to the toast of the Dominion, proposed by Mr. Macmaster, Sir Charles Tupper sketched the birth and growth of Canada from a small isolation of afew an- tagonistic provinces ; how twenty-five years ago, when leader of the Government of Nova Scotia, he had addressed himself to the confederation of the Maritime Pro- vinces ; how the larger question of the genera! confederation grew from the small- er; how with the assistance of both great parties the Canadian constitution was formed, which iion. Mr. Mowat would probably frankly admit to be worthy of praise, though twenty-one years’ experience doubtless showed some reforms were pos- sibly needed. Sir Charles Tupper hailed Imperial Federation with every satisfac- tion, because the project was promoted by patriotic motives and a desire to draw closer the silken bonds uniting the cvlonies and the motherland. Finally hecontrasted the financial position of the Dominion to- day with 1866, when he had difficulty in obtaining £400,000 for a railway from Truro to Pictou.
Hon. Mr. Mowat, responding to the same toast, said Sir Charles Tupper was a giant of party politics in Canada. He hoped, therefore, he would remain in his present post always, where he discharged his duties in a manner above criticism, ac- tuated by pure regard to the welfare of the Dominion. He eulogized Lord Kuutsford’s earnest attention and keen interest to the concerns of the colonies. The constitution of the Dominion was certainly not perfect, though in whatever direction reform was necessary it must be to strengthen rathfer than weaken the bonds uniting the colonies and the motherland.
Boston Markets.
The official market report of the Boston Chamber of Commerce, July 12, gives the following quotations :—
Eaas.—Receipts for the week 27 boxes, 111 bbls., 14,989 cases ; last week 42 boxes, 22 bbis., 8,862 cases. There was a very good demand early in the weeks, and prices were still further advanced. For the past day or two Eastern extras have been sell- ing at 184 to 19c; P. E. Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick at 184 to 18¢; Michigan extras at 18 to 18$c, and other western at 17$ to 18c as to quality. At the advanced prices trade is not quite so active ,asit has been, but the market closes with a steady tone.
Porators.—-There has been an active markec the past week and since Monday prices have taken a sharp upward turn. Tuesday the best rose and hebrons sold at $3.00 to $3.25, but yesterday were scarce at $4.00. The market closes very firm at quotations,
Fisu.—Receipts of codfish continue light and prices have further advanced. Mackerel are in steady demand with prices well sustained.
