siccacinipliciainadh OUR WATER SYSTEM. Sir,—Your correspondent, Mr. L. P. Tanton, by his flippant style of dealing with the subject, seems to know all about water. Kindly permit me to ask him what is meant by the following sentences, tiken from hia letter of the 23rd inst.:

“Take for illustration two lengths of pipe one perfectly sound, and the other thickly perforated with smal! holes over its entire length. Place both pipes on a level with each other, one end of each pipe closed up and the other end of each attached to a reservoir. In the sound pipe you will find the pressure the same at both ends and onal! sides. In the perforated pipe the further you get away from the re- servoir the weaker the pressure. The question then is whether or not the larger number of taps in use along the line of transit accompanied by the retarding influence of turns in the pipes and the resistance of friction is not calculated to send this theory of ‘equal pressure’ to school for a second term.”

I was going to say that Mr. Tanton was

“all at sea,” had it not been for the fact that he tells us—quite deliberately too— that he has some knowledge of the subject under consideration, If Tl understand the matter aright, the proposed pipe line on the Malpeque Road is to be placed there to complete the circuit. When it is laid there will be «a complete single pipe- line from the reservoir along the Mount Edward and St. Peter’s roads to the city, and back again via the Malpeque road to the reservoir, after connecting with the pumps at the pump- ing station. Ifthis be so, then Mr. Tan- ton’s theory about “perforated pipe” and “perfectly sound pipe” and the placing of them “on a level with each other” is ufter nonsense, as the perforations and taps do not apply, there being no second line with which to make the comparison, vut only one continous Circuit, The laying of the additional pipes to complete the system costs money, and if it can be demonstrated that our water sys- tem in its present condition is sufficiently safe, it is folly to think of laying down the Malpeque Road portion. I am not in a position to say whether or not it is so; but this [am prepared to say that, with the Malpeque Road line completed, we will have two lines, instead of one—as at pre- sent — to supply the city for all purposes; and also have two pipe lines to supply the reservoir. For instance, should a break take place on the direct line between the pumping station and the reservoir, the city could be supplied and the reservoir kept full, at the same time, by the direct line via. Malpeque Road. Or if a break should occur on the Mt. Edward line the city could be eupplied either from the reservoir or from the pumping station, direct, as completely as if no break had occurred. Or if a break should occur at College hill, for instance, water takers on the Malpeque Road’ Gould “still be supplied via. Mt. Edward and St. Peter’s Roads through the city back te College hill. The advantage to be gained by this additional iine is self- evident, and it does not require a know- ledge of the science which treats of fluids or any other science to understand this. A little hydrostatics mixed with common sense is good indeed, but hydrostatics without common sense is useless.

Peter Mitchell, Mr. Richard White, Lieut.-Colonel Hughes, Messrs. Henry Dalby, E. N. St Jean, Q.C.,J. P. B. Casgrain, J.M. Fortier, Geo. W. Stephens, jr., D. Z. Bessette, A. Terroux, S.S. Silverman, ex-Ald. Dufresne, Ald. Préfontaine, Hon. A. Archambault, M.L.C., etc. After the visit of inspection to the cellars had been paid and the different arrangements for bottling, etc., highly com. mented¢ upon, toasts were in order, A beautiful speech was uttered by the Lieu tenant-Governor, who wished the Company euccess in their great enterprise.
