FURTHER EVIDENCE TAKEN-—-THE PRISONERS WAKE STATEMENTS——BOTH SENT UP FOR TRIAL IN THE SUPREME COURT,

Tue enguiry into the charge of barglary

preferred against William Hill and Francis Fleming, was resumed this forenoon. There was 4 large number of spectators present,

Tos. A. Ropp was the first witness ex- amined. He said he was the son of Mr. lohp Rodd, of Milton. He remembered Tuesday, the 10th of July, He saw four strange persons in their hay loft that morn- ing—three men and a boy. About fifteen minutes after he saw them, two of the four came into the house and asked for break- fast. All four came down from the lott previous to this, and stood at the stable door little while. He was in the room while the two were eating their breakfast. One of the men had his hand in a sling. He gaic he got it scalded with hot lard. He hat a brown moustache, but otherwise clean shaven face. Noticed nothing peculiar about the other man. The two prisoners are the persons who had breakfast at our place. Did not notice that one of them was lame. John Moreside came into the house while the men were at breakfast. The men told my mother they were going to Georgetown, but were on the wrong road :

Jane BULLMAN was next sworn. She said she lived at New Glasgow, and was at home on Wednesday,fthe Ilth July. Two strange men called at her place on the after- noon of that day. They asked for some- thing to eat. long distance, and were on their way to Summerside. One of the men had one foot cut off ; the other wore a brown mous- tache, but"no other whiskers. The prisoners in the dock are the men who were at our place. The men went toward New Glas- gow Bridge after leaving our place. Wit- ness helped get some bread and milk for the two men.

Joseru Pingo said he was a tailor by trade, and lived and worked ou the Rustico Road, some two miles from McKay's shop. He remembered Tuesday, the 10th. He was at Peter Martin's shop, where he worked, on that day. Martin and his wife were away, and witness had charge of the shop. About teatime two men came into the shop and asked for a fig of tobacco. They got the tobacco, tendering 25 cents in payment. Witness could not change the money, and the men, after taking a bite off the fig, returned it. One of the men had a club foot. The other man wore a mous- tache, but do not know that he had any whiskers. Witness identified Hill as the man who had the club foot ; but could not swear that Fleming was the man who was with him. To the best of his belief, how- ever, he was the man.

Frep JORDAN was next called. Heis a son of the man who keeps the cemetery in the Royalty. On Sunday the 8th July he siw three men anda boy in the railway station there. They were sitting down reading. Witness sat in the stationa while and then went home. At dinner time he went down to the station again and on his way wet two of the men going up to the house. In the station he saw the other man aud the boy. He then returned to the house and saw the other two men at dinner. After dinner he again went down to the station and saw the man and boy going along the track. The other two men re- sumed their reading after dinner. After a while the man and boy returned to the station and witness left all four there to- gether. In the evening witness again re- turned to the station aud saw one of the men bandaging up hisarm. One of the men had his foot cut cff at the instep. Francis Fleming is the man who had his arm bandaged up; Hill is the man who had his foot cut off; John Flemimg (the boy) is the one who went along the track with the other man. The fourth man was a good deal darker than the others, and had a lightmoustache. He wore a round felt hat. Fleming wore a hard hat.

Henry C. Jorpows said he was keeper of the Cemetery in the Royaity and the father of the last witness. He was positive it was on the 8th of July (Sunday) that his son was down to the station. His testimony corroborated that of the previous witness.

This was all the evidence the court deemed it necessary to receive, and His Honor intimated his intention of sending the men up for trial in the Supreme Court. The prisoner Hill then rose and asked per- mission tu make astatement. His request was complied with and he spoke as foliows: The fourth man referred to in the evidence was the man with whom I went to Rustico, and not the prisoner Fleming. Although this man was somewhat darker than Flem- ing he resembled him very much. Both of us had met Fleming on several previous occasions. I think it was on the morning of Tuesday that we separated from Flem- ing and went to Rustico. Fleming told us that he was going to Souris. I came back on Thursday, aud on the next day (Friday) met Fleming. He told me that he had been up to Mount Stewart, and said that it was no use of his going any further, as he did n»t vet the information he want- ed about his brother. We were together off aud on from that time till we were arrested.

Francis Fleming then made a statement. He said:—-On the Saturday before Sunday, the 8th, I met this man’Hill and the other man. On Sunday we were in the Cemetery Station. On Monday we went over the road where the waterworks are being built. We intended sleeping that night in an old barn off the road, but did not do so because it was too open. Instead we went to the barn where the boy (Rodd) says he saw us next morning, and stopped there all night. Hill and I had breakfast there. I asked the lady of the house if the road went to Georgetown. I was told that it did not. I then returned back, coming as far as the station. Then I seperated from Hill and the other man, they saying they were going some place to see about fishing. 1 came down to the Junction then and went to- wards Mount Stewart in company with the boy. That night I stopped at the house of the man I suppose is named Fitzpatrick. The previous statement I made is all right.

His Honor then ordered that the two men—Hill and Fleming—be remanded to jail to stand trial in the Supreme Court, and that the boy, John Fleming, be also held as a material witness.

al argued against the Fshery Treaty. Senator Stewart suggested that there should be honorable negotiations opened between the United States, Great Britain and Canada, to blot out all wrongs or Imaginary wrongs, suffered or supposed to have been suffered on both sides and the foundation of a union of the great Eng- lish speaking race. England should name a sum to be paid for the Canadas, and the Dominion should make conditions of union. The United States should respond in a spirit of concession and generosity. If no treaty could be made on these terms, all negot iations should cease until it was time for reflection and consideration and jor all existing irritation to pass away.

News Notes From Ottawa. Orrawa, July 23.

A special cabie says that the prizes won by the Canadian team at Wimbledon aggre- gate three hundred and twenty three pounds, being a larger amount than last year.

Two hundred and fifty more Icelanders are expected at Quebec to-day, bound for the Northwest.

Mrs. Donaldson, widow of the late Major Donaldson, while walking along the Egde Cliff at the of Parks Street to-day tripped and fell over it. The Cliff is 75 feet high and the lady was instantly killed.

To-day the Liberals of Halton nominated John Haldie to contest the riding for the Commons.

The Skeena River Troubles.

Orrawa, July 23.

The Government has not received any further news from British Columbia re- garding the trouble with the Indians on

the Skeena River. It is scarcely likely that any news will be received for a day or two, as it must go from Essington to Vic- toria before it can be telegraphed here. Essington is two or three days’ steam from Victoria, and no steamer was expected down before H. M. 8S. Caroline’s return.

At Dalhousie.

The Governor General and party arrived here this afternoon from the Cascapedia, and after waiting for a few hours at the Inch Arran House, left by special train for Quebec.

Sir John A. Macdonald will leave here to-morrow to visit Sir George Stephen at St. Octave.

Disastrous Fires. STockHoLm, July 23.

_ Disastrous fires in the timber regions of Northern Sweden have destroyed the town of Sundesvall and two neighboring villages. The loss is estimated at $9,000,000.

EvEenssure, Wt., July 23. The coal mining town of Rosdin, 28 miles from here, was burned yesterday. The eatire population of 1500 is Nothing was saved. About 250 houses were burned and nothing is left but the Coal Company’s office and depot. Loss,

Carro, July 23.

A despatch from Wady Halfa says that three boats loaded with native fugitives, who left that place during the attack of dervishes onthe 20th inst., sunk in the river and 150 persons were drowned.

Personal. A letter received by a Minister of the Crown in Ottawa from Sir John Macdonald, intimates that the Premier's health is good, and that he is enjoying his well-earned holi- day. The honorary degree of Master of Arts has been conferred by Dartmouth College upon Mr. Stephen O'Meara, the news editor of the Boston Journal. Mr. O'Meara has also been chosen Treasurer of the New England Asso- ciation.

Mr. Sidney Rauschenberg, of New York, who is connected with one of the New York hospitals, was in the city last week, and this morning leaves for P. E. Island. Mr. R. is travelling through the province gathering in- formation for a series of articles he is to write on the climate, etc., for some southern papers. St. John Telegraph.

Dr. Anderson, of Prince of Wales College, who was at the teachers’ convention, re- mained in St. John over Sunday. He informs the Sun that during a residence of 35 years in Prince Edward Island he has only been ill once. Dr. Anderson is not unwilling to give the climate of the little province due credit for its share in this result, but claims some- thing for the sturdy constitution which he brought from Aberdeenshire.—St. John Sun.

Mrs. Bessie Starr Keefer was born in the Annapolis Valley, in sight of Blomidon, spent her chlJdhood in Yarmouth, N. 8., graduated with honor in the Liberal Arts Course of the Wesleyan College, Hamilton, Ontario, 1876, and in the same year was mar- sled to the Rev. B. & Keefer, of the Niagara Methodist Conference. She has filled with great distinction respon- sible positions in the Ontario W. C. xsi Her latest triumph, which may be classed as brilliant, was won during the International Council of Women in Washington, where, amid the delegates of the various nations, she was readily accorded a first place, both in committee and on the platform.

(Methodist), was presented with several addresses and testimonials of the most flattering nature. The membersof the session of the Presbyterian Church, on behalf of the congregation in their letter, attested to Mr. Chappelle’s ‘‘ broad and liberal views

on all religious questions,” while the address |

of the Literary and Scientific Society, headed by Capt. Joseph Read said ‘‘ our object in the address is to encourage you to maintain that spirit of charity and fair play—that broad and generous treatment of the feelings and sentiments of others, with whose opinions you did not agree, that kind and pleasant look, as well as word and deed which made your pre- sence a happy influence for good.” The rev. gentleman left for his new field of labor on Thursday last at Campbelton, N. B., followed by the well wishes of all our people.
