HAVEN

On Wednesday evening, April 1i, a number of the residents of New I-Isven gathered st. the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Newman. This gathering was sponsored by the Women's Institute, and the guest of honor was "Donna. Mae Dob- bin," s charming little girl just seven weeks old. who through very tragic circumstance! lost her mother and twin brother. She is now being cared for by Mrs. Star. ley Newman.

"Donna Mac" was dressed in a pale pink crocheted dress, a gill. from s close girl friend of her de- ceased mother, with s. pink ab: white Jacket and bootees to match. which were hand knit and given t: her by Mrs. James Coles of Char- lottetown. _

During the course of the eve- ning Messrs. Melvin and Roland Hyde with their guitar and violin delighted those present with mus- ic, consisting oi woltzes and old time songs and tunes. 'I‘hey were accompanied on the plsno by Mrs. Newman. A feature attraction of the evening was a dance, the "Charleston" very ably done by Mrs. Richard MscPhce.

Later on in the evening. Mrs. MacDonald, president oi the In~ stituts took up s collection which amounted to $13.00 and was prc lented to Mrs. Newman for "Dou ns Mac" to be used for food and clothes, etc. "Dona Mae" very sweetly displayed her “tbenk-you" with hcrvchsrsuing mcnusr. and sweet Mpressions ss she was pass- ed from one lady to another.

At s late hour s delicious lunch was served by the ladies present, after which all departed to their respective homes alter wishing Mrs. Newman every success in looking sim- her small charge.

The ladies oi "New I-Isven Insti- tute" are to be congratulated on this vtry kind gesture. and they never miss a chance to help s charitable cause. Wherever there is an appeal for help, the "New l-Ia- ven institute!" -namo is always

SLEEP

With their usual poetic insight the Cvredis thought 0f and pictur- ed sleep and death as twins, it is true that they look alike. rhe ides has passed over into the word “cemetery? where we bury our dead. and which sleeping place. '

Is it not. true that we actually practice dying every time we go to sleep? Nature scenic to be habituat- lng us to the mood of unconscious- ness. We take some risk every time we go to sleep. Poets have pan] their respects in sleep in some of our finest verse. Take Young who gave us that very long poem. "Night Thoughts." He begins thus -"’_I‘lred nature's sweet restorer, balmvsleep." Then on towards the end, 1n the ninth night we have:

"Sleep! dewey wand

Has stroked my drooping ltfl, and promises

My long arrear of rest, the downy God

W111 pay ere long and bless me with repose,

Haste, haste. sweet stranger, flour the peasant’: cot,

The ship-boy's hammock. or soldier's straw.

whence sorrow never chased thee

Oi course we would expect. Shakespeare who deals with all conceivable human situations to mention sleep. He does only to mention one instance, that in Mac- ‘Jeih:

Macbeth does murder sleep, ‘inno- cent sleep.

Sleep that knits up the ravelled sleeve of care,

The death of each day's life, sore labourers bath.

Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course,

Julius Caesar where little Lucius, before the battle of Philippl, falls asleep over his musical instrument, and Brutus hesitates to waken him.

Then an anonymous poem be- gins thus: in Wllllsm ‘Knlghtu anthology: .

"Let us give thanks for two things sleep and death- Sleep who takes little children to his arms, And blesses them, and gives them ' to ‘the day’ ' ’ With rosy cheeks . . . Who comes more slowly in the sf- "ter years."

These are but a few quotations to show how poetry deals with sleep.

I have heard lectures on dreams. but like Omar Khayam cums sway by the same door through which I went in. Hear himself:

Leigh Hunt has an essay on dreams. The angel o! death visited the ‘home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stevenson on Sunday morning. March 14th. and claimed for its own their little daughter, Wanda. Jeanette, at the tender age of twenty months- Wanda was a bright, lovable child, and’ to be ‘taken away so suddenly, was a 1 great shock to her parents. There | are left to mourn, besides her pa:- ents. one sister, Irene.

The funeral service was held from her late residence on Tucs- day. March 14th, at two o'clock. and was conducted by Rev. W. B. iivfacPhail of the Pleasant Valley ‘United Church. Mr. MacPhall ,spoke very encouraging and sym- pathetic words, taking for his text- "Sufle: the Little Children to Come Uinto Me." Hymns sung were: When l-Ie Oometh to Make up His Jemls; Jesus Loves Me; |rtnd Safe 1n the Arms of Jesus- Tho pallbearers were: William |Ca.rr, Randolph Nicholson, Vernon Somcrs and Gordon Stevenson. 1n- terment was in the Fredericton cemetery.

During World War 1 he was un-- Uuslly active in war work. He exsnunsd draftees, solicited in thrse Red Cross drives and fig- ured in Liberty boon and War Sav- ings Stamp drives. In addition he did much routine work. giving medical examinations and atten- tentlon for the Red Cross.

After his graduation from the University of Minnesota medical school in 1807. he worked for six years at 6t. Peter Hospital for the Insane, St. Peter, Mirfimbr. Nich- olson was called several times in testify as to the sanity of persons on irisl in ‘Seattle courts.
