or _and‘ ware Must Become Re~Acquainted After Return

One of the tragedies of the war is the disappointment that so mam: husbands and wives have experienced in their reunion. Through all the long, bleak days of loneliness and anxiety while they were parted, being-beck together wasthe onethlng that they had look- ed forward to, that they‘ had dreamed about and prayed for. 1t was to have been the one perfect moment in their lives, when all the pent- up love and longing of their souls would burst their dams and f-lood their world with joy.

But in so many cases Jchnnyis return from the war hasn't been like that. After the first excitement of being ‘at houie again everything has fallen flat Nothing has been LlkC either the ,_ husband or the wife pictured it. ’ Theirs lws not been the reunion of lovers. It has been the meeting of strangers who are awkward and shy with each other and who feel that there is a wall between them that they do not know how to break down.

UNL‘KE'LETTERS THEY WROTE

Among all the pathetic letters that come to this column none are sadder than those written ‘by wives _ who are hurt and bewildered by the attitude of . _ their husbands since they came buck from’ overseas. They say that their husbands’ letters from Hie front were filled WM! WK)“ ' °‘ affections for them and the children and of longin8 to be beck home. and with plans for the many things they would do together when they returned. ' ' ‘

"But now." say thwe tearful wives, “that our husbands-have come back. they are restless and dissatisﬁed and irritable. Nothing we do seems to please them. The children's noise gets on their nerves. Our talk about domestic ‘affairs burs them. They wont take us out eny- where. They grouch over the high cost of livl11g. And they are no more like the gay, companionabie. understanding husbands who went to war than l! they were another race" of human beings."

And the husbands, on their part are just as much disillusioned 1n finding that their wives have changed from glamour girls into settled women, as the wives are in discovering that their Sunny Jirns have turned into grouches. And it ls all very pitJful but. inevitable, for none of us stay static. No man and woman who went through the war. either on the home front or the battle front, remain unchanged. Danger and death and work and worry took their toll of them and left their ineffaceable marks upon them. '

Perhaps the main reason why husbands and wives have found it hard m adjust themselves to each other after the war is because when they were separated each idealized the other and created a men and woman with virtues that are not of this world, and set them against a background of luxuries and beauty_ To every woman. her soldier hill- band was as handsome and gallant as any knight of old, and to every man his wife or the girl he left behind him was a combination of Miss America and a blue ribbon chef, am‘. his home a palace to dream about.

And when he came beck and found that Maria bed gotten fat. and Maria discovered that the war hadn't changed Johnny's looks or sweetened his disposition and that the little bungalow was st‘ll a little bungalow. why. they just couldn't-take 1c. ,

But happily. if human nature ls cantankerous, it is also ﬂexible. And if Johnny and Maria will only be patient with each other, instead Of 86mm! 8 divorce; they wfll adjust themselves to eech‘other's new Dersonalitles and looks, and learn ﬁoJike them, and believe that the old

bungalow is a mighty comfortable place to live in after all.
