At the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, a serics of experiments with kites as a means of lifting weights are being made. Dadyeon, and are said to rise with the least breeze and float horizontally with considerable buoyancy. Models only, are being tried.

The plateau of pamir, or the Roof of the World, as it is called, in Central Asia, has recently been explored by a Russian geologist named Mu-chketow, who reports that the Bolor Tagh, or Cloud Mountains, which Dumboldt supposed to be in that region have no realexistence. Several colossal moun- tain chain converge there in such a way as to creato the impression that thore ix a vast central group. but this impression is pronounced incorrect.

There will be a solar eclipse on July 19, 1879, which will be almost, but not quite, total. seen at Aden, in Arabia, just after mid- day, the sun's light will be visible as a very thin rind around the darkened moon. Ninety-seven one-huandredths of the sun’s diwmeter will be eclipsed. An effort may be made to observe the intra Mercurial planet on this occas- ion, but the greater darkness of ¢om- plete obscuration is probably necessary to make this search successful.
