As to the origin of the fire Mr. Kennedy says that he accidentally overturned a large burning kerosene oil lamp upen some excelsior in a closet at the rear of his shop. He endeavored to first extinguish ~ the flames, bot being unable to do so, he at once gave the alarm.

A Second Fire.

At nine o’clock this morning the stable of Mr. Charles Harvey, proprietor of the North American Hotel, was discovered on (tice. This was evidently the work of an jincendiary. Silsby Engine was then dis- jabled by leaking |tubes, and Rollo was brought into action, and obtained a supply of water from Quirk’s pump. The fire spread rapidly to the carriage factory in |the rear of Mr. John Scott’s, oceupied by |Messrs. McAleer & Carroll, and from ‘thence to the North American Hotel. | Notwithstanding the gallant work of the | firemen all the buildings above nained were | destroyed, together with a number of Stables, ete, in the rear of the houses

The property destroyed is estimated roughly, to be worth $200,000, and it is said to be insured for about half that amount. The men worked like trojans and did wonders under the circumstances. At first the fire attracted llittle notice, but the flames soon gained ‘such headway, in consequence of the short water supply, that the fine building was | almost completely destroyed. Only the ‘walls and the principal vaults remain. Assistant Collector Bremner placed all the Custom House papers in the proper vault, where they still remain.

Newson and Fraser & Reddin removed their stocks, lor the greater portion of them. The Patriot beaved little but paper, and much of that was afterwards removed from the square in a damaged state, as the flakes of fire attack- ed it, and the furniture of Mr. Newson, ‘which occupied a good portion of the square about and near the Colonial Build- ing. Mr. Kennedy lost everything, with trifling exception ; Mr. Nelmes’ and Mr. Haszard’s stock suffered severely; Mr. Taylor, we believe, saved the greater por- tion of his stock; Messrs. W. & A. Brown saved considerable, and Mr. C. B. Warren, who occupied ‘‘ Stamper’s Cormr, re- \ moved his stoek of boots and shoes, but as we have shown, the building was not de stroyed. a

The death of Mr. Joseph Weeks, one of Charlottetown’s oldest and most res- pected citizens, occurred this morning He was at work carrying water to extinguish the fire which threatened the house of his neighbor, and while thus employed he
