The Dominion Fur Auction at Winnipeg last week had the larg- est offering of miiskrats placed on any sale this year and they drew higher prices than the better iliialli-Y floods of the previous sales held by this company, 200,000 better quality sold five to ten per- cent above the April sale while the Chekner uuality sections were slightly easier. Heavies sold from -1-00 to 54.15: semi-hcavies 33.00 to 03.25; lights 32.55 to 82.80; me. dium and small si.ao to 2,10, Ranch mink. of which 4,000 was Olfefcd With 05?? sold at prices of 10 to 15 per cent higher than the April sole. Ordinary males aver- aged from 27 to 328.50; ordinary fcmales 317 to 518.50. Only a small percentage of the 80,000 squirrels changed hands. Better quality clean Alberta's sold up to 90 cents. Manitoba's sold from 70 to 80 cents, off-grades from 50 to 62 cenls....We had no idea that the western trappers bagged so many of the active little squirrels as this sale showed.
At Lampson's sale of muskrat held last week, 3051; of the over 300,000 was sold with s top of 54.60 for New York Spring-Win- tor. Black miiskrat had a top of 33.90. Muskrat, as will be seen. is in very active demand all over, bringing excellent prices. At Lnmpson's mink sale the follow- ing day an especially fine collec- tion of the Great Lakes Mink As- sociation skins brought better than s28 over-all average, the best record of the season. Top prices were not in the best of the season but selling was marked by con- sistently strong prices. Only in scnttcrcd instances did males fail to bring 530 while females under sill were few and far between.

The amendment also provides that the quota will start on July 1st of each year and the 596 limitation would be based upon domestic production of mink. muskrat and silver fox furs and skins in the twelve months immediately preceding the start of the quota. period. ,.
The above act. is an extremely drastic one if It passes the House of Representatives and goes into effect. It would mean that if the production of mink in the United States was 2.000.000 in 1950. only 500.000 would be allowed to be imported into the United States and if the production of silver fox and mutations there was 50.- 000 only 12,500 would be permit- ted to be imported. While the shot is supposed to be aimed at Russia it would hit Norway, Swe- den, Denmark snd Canada, be- cause Russia does not export any quantity of mink or fox skins. while the other countries men- tioned. particularly Norway, ex- port B. great many blue fox skins and a great many mink skins.

DOOM Annual Pastures and boiling Crops The f. showers and driz-
zle that have been a. feature of our April weather in 1951. have given many of us the impression that the lack of moisture in our soils, as mentioned in "Newsy Notes" of April 1th. was being made up. The records show only 2.61 inches in the first 24 days: this is less than average and will! not do much to overcome the 13 inch deficiency from September 1st, 1950 to March 91st, 1951. This would indicate that annual pas- tures and soiling crops are likely to prove of great value during the summer and autumn of this year. These crops always give large re- turns for the amount of time and labour expended on them. Green feed is always greatly relished by cattle, sheep, hogs and poultry when the pastures and poultry runs get dry in August and Sep- tember. They are not only of great value in maintaining the milk. flow of dairy cows during this per-
iod but frequently increase the: flow if started before the regular, pasture fails. it
Annual Pastures k i We have found oats sown at the; rate of about four bushels per. acre the most satisfactory supple-' mentary pasture for dairy cows.. One year, 100 pounds of Laurel; hullcss oats was sown to the acre on June 19th. The grain was abouti 8" to 12" high when the cows were, turned in on it July 24th. They were pastured for an hour in the forenoon for the first day or so and then an hour in the foreman and an hour on a half in the af- ternoon. The oats grew very strong although the land was a sandy loam and not considered in good heart. The area used was an acre and a half and it provided the equivalent of 201 cow pasture days or equal to pasture for one cow for about five months. Our tests in-p dicated that oats and early red. clover sown after the middle of June would maintain and even in- crease the milk flow when used to fill in immediately after the cattle had eaten off the flush of the June grass which usually ex- tends In this province well into July. The red clover made E good growth and gave an excellent af- termath that. was used for pas- lure later in the autumn. on rich. fertile land oats, peas and vetches are recommended for an- nual pastures. This mixture pro- vides a pasture much richer in
proteins. soiling Crops .
Corn is the outstanding soiling crop for this province. It gives a large yield of succulent feed and is much relished by live stock. Longfellow was the variety gener- ally recommended in former years.
