Viscount Boyle, son of the Earl of Shannon is said to have purchased a valuable cattle ranche, forty miles west ot Fort Macleod in the Canadian North west.
The Canadian Government will, as usual have an exhibit thoroughly re presentative of the agricultural products of the Dominion of the royal Agricul- tural show at Shrewsbury England.
Another party of young girls was sent out to Canada last week by Miss Rye from her “Home” at Peckham. Lord Shaftesbury was amongst the company who assembled to witness the departure of the youthful travellers from Euston, Miss Rye herself proceed ing with them to Liverpool.
Sir Charics Tupper has accepted an invitation to attend a meeting on be- half of the Woman's Emigration Society of Lord Salisbury’s mansion, in Ariing ton street. The Marquis of Lorne is to preside. The High Commissioner has alsofeonsented to act as one of the stewards at the banquet to be given to the Marquis of Normanby, at Willis’s Rooms, upon bis return from Australia.
The Rev. Mr. F. D. Perrott, of the
St. Peter's Emigration Club, West Bromwick, thus writes: “The first married man to emigrate to Canada
from our Club, and remain there, a short time ago sent home £20, and his wife and family sailed a short time ago to meet him at Toronto. He has only been out about ten months. Another wife has been seut money, and she goes
in about a fortnight. These are the first cases of married men sent out
from the club.”
Though Canada is not represented as she might and ought to have been, at the Forestry Exhibition at Edinburgh, which opened on Tuesday, two exhibits are being made on her behalf by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and New Brunswick respectively. The Company's exhibit, organized by Mr. Alexander Begg, was in thorough or- der on the opening day, and has already attracted much favorable notice. One special feature is that the cost of every article on the Manitoba Farm which the exhibit represents is given, so that intending settlers may gain an accurate idea of the expenditure necessary in starting a new home in the North- West.
There is evidently no falling off in the sympathy ard interest which have been aroused in the emigration move- ment. The meeting at Kensington which we record this week, shows that a recognition is spreading of the needs of other districts than the east of Lon- don. This is satisfactory; but it is still more gratifying to find Lord Lorne emphasizing, in a manner about which there can be no mistake, the necessity for the most careful selection of suit- able persons. The distinction which he pointed out ina single sentence— “town workers were not required, country workers were’—is all impor- tant, and must be thoroughly realized and constantly borne in mind in all ef- forts to promote or carry on assisted emigration.
In the view of the importance of canned salmon as an article of diet, lec- tures with demonstrations are given at the International Health Exhibition, under the superintendence of Mrs. Charles Clarke, Lady Superintendent of the National Training School of Cook ery, South Kensington. Thursday is io particular set apart for demonstrations, when canned salmon is cooked and served in three different ways—mayon naise, croquette, and scallop. Already there is exported annually from British Columbia canned salmon to the extent of 10,000,000 Ibs, valued @ about £200,000, and the trade is largely on the increase. Of the above total Great Britain takes 250,000 Ibs., the United States 300,000 lbs., and Canada and Australia 70,000 lbs. The retail price of the best brands is about 7d or 8d per lb., and experts claim that on the two important points of economy and nu- trition canned salmon compares favor- ably with any other article of diet.
