Has there been a Conservative Re-action ?

Ws have stated on several occasions that a Conservative re-action has been taking place throughout the Dominion during the last three or four years. In proof of this, we now give a few extracts from the official returns of the General Elections in 1874, and of the partial elections since held. ‘Lwo facts are established by these figures— first, that there has been a great re-action since the advent of McKenzie to power ; and, secondly, that the Grit victories of 1874 were brought about by bribery and corruption. (The name of the successful candidate in each case is given in italics) : OHAMBLY COUNTY. Jodoin (Liberal), 848. Benoit (Conservative), 742. Mr. Jodoin was unseated, and a new

writ gave Jodoin, . 863. Benoit, . 817.

Mr. Jodoin was again unseated, and this time disqualified for corruption. A third election resulted in Mr. Benoit, the Conser- vative, being elected by 150 majority.

CHARLEVOIX COUNTY. P. A. Tremblay (Liberal), = 1377. Chaveau (Conservative), 1104.

On Mr. Tremblay being wnseated for

bribery, a new writ, in 1875, gave Langevin (Conservative), 952. Tremblay (Liberal), 741.

Mr. Langevin was unseated on account of clerical interference, but was again elected by a majority of 56. Thus a Liberal majority of 273 was changed into a minor- ity of 56.

DIGBY COUNTY, N. 5S. Oakes (Liberal),. . 1168. Savary (Conservative), 631.

On Mr. Oakes’ appeintment to Legisla-

tive Council, a new writ gave Mr. Vail (Liberal), . 932. Taylor (Conservative), 656.

On Mr. Vail’s resignation, for violation of Independence of Parliament Law, a new writ gave

Wade (Conservative), 1210. Vail (Liberal), 845.

A Liberal majority of 537 was changed

into a Conservative majority of 365. DRUMMOND AND ARTHABASKA. Laurier (Liberal) 1,786. Tesseir (Conservative) 1,548.

On the appointment of M. Laurier to a seat in the Cabinet :

Bourbeau (Conservative) 1,902. Laurier (Liberal) 1,880.

Again, a Liberal majority of 238 was

changed into a minority of 22. KAMOURASKA COUNTY.

Major Walker was disqualified for bribery and corruption. A new writ resulted :—

On Mr. Stuart being unseated for bribery and corruption, the Conservative candidate was elected by a majority of 156.

a Conservative majority of 351, and yet the Grit organs will not admit of any re-ac- tion.

In this county a Liberal majority of nine- teen was changed into a Conservative majo- rity of 98. In Queen’s County, P. E. L., another Conservative victory was gained two years ago.

Will the Patriot tell us the cause of the remarkable change in public opinion? If he will not admit the word “ re-action’,

what will he be willing to call it? a

Masor WALKER, who was unseated and disqualified for bribery and corruption, by the Courts, has been again nominated by Reformers as an ‘‘elevator of the standard,” and yet our friend of the Patriot has noth-

ing to say against such a course. The most corrupt candi are pure as snew, in his pinion, if they support the party.

Unpatriotic Silence.

Tar Patriot is ominously silent respect- ing the refusal of Perry, Yeo, Davies, Mc- Intyre and Sinclair to accept a seat in the Cabinet. They have been—according to Mr. Perry—false and traitorous to the in- terests of the Province which trusted and elected them? But the Putriot (save the

mark) is silent. _- Grit Consistency.

Iv is very strange how great men over- look their own inconsistencies. The faults they are so ready to detect in others, they can not believe to exist in themselves. Perhaps the excessive watching they bestow on their neighbors is the reason of their personal neglect. Or perhaps they expect the grand qualities they possess to over- shadow the weakness they share with their fellow men. They wish peculiar attention to be paid to their great points and peculiar

‘| indifference to be shown to their weak ones.

And they generally measure themselves by a protracted contemplation of the former. But they should not be disappointed if a glance be taken at the latter. For the principles to which a man professes to guide his conduct should apply generally, in mat- ters of small as well as of great importance. Observers should extract the same princi- ple from his action in different cases. No one, we presume, will question the truth{of this.

Now, we all know the side which the editor of the Patriot has taken on the sub ject of trade. He would have it free—as free as the sunlight at mid-day in August. Restrictions, in themselves barbarous, are only to be defended as a means of rais- ing a revenue. The very idea of Retaliation in matters of Tariff rouses a storm of righteous resentment in his Liberal soul. To try to make the strong deal fairly with the weak, to try to establish equitable rela- tions, the one with the other, might make the gulf between them wider. It might in- duce the stronger, from pure spite, to in- crease his advantage. And the result would, of course, be doubly disastrous to the weak aspirant for equality. Such seems to be the view of the editor of the Patriot.

Time was, not long ago, when he sang a different tune. We all remember how en- thusiastic he was when he heard the false report that the bully of at Montreal school had been faced and thrashed by a younger pupil, who had stood in awe of him before. To be sure, the tyranny of the stronger was unjust, exactly as the protectionist tariff of the United States is unjust. But resistanc, to the former he admired, because of its good effect. Resistance to the latter, on the contrary, he considers stupid. Nay! it is traitorous. Conspirators against their country’s weal are all they who oppose the present arrangement of the tariff. No matter if the finances of the country are go- ing behind hand. No matter if a national debt is being imposed on the Dominion which it will require the most prudent man- agement of the public moneys to check, much less to remove, any attempt in this direction would be ‘‘retaliation,” and this

the men that make us their dupes. Let us wait for the conversion of the United States to Free Trade principles, says the Patriot. Yes, but if Canadian legislation can hasten that conversion, let it be tried. This is the

The Evidence at the Inquest.

Sueciac, May 25.

David White testified that he saw a boy in a wagon, near to Atkinson’s ‘ane, on the morning of the 13th Oet. He did not re- cognize the wagon or its occupants. It was about sunrise. A horse held by a man was in the field not far from the wagon. Wit- ness did not know the wagon or the horse. horse. Thought he could recognize the man if he saw him now. Witness stopped his horse, and the man in the field left his horse andjghowed an uneasy ianner, and seemed a he thought witness was the proprietor.” The horse had been apparently taken through the fence, close to where the wagon was. The fence was not down sutli- cient to admit the wagon. The boy was about 12 years old, and looked cold and fidgety, as if in trouble. He saw ne one besides the boy and man. The harness was on the horse. Never saw horse nor man or boy before, and the strange circumstance of their being there at that hour struck him( forcibly. Was not in through the bars for three or four days before or after the 12th Oct.; passed the bars on the morning of the 13th, but noticed nothing wrong. The strange party were gone when he returned. Believed he purchased trees from Myric and partners about the 12th Oct.

Cross examined by Mr. Gilbert—Harry Osborne was not the boy, and John Os- borne was not the man he saw. Did not think it could have been possible for a wagon to traverse the beach of the river in rear of Atkinson’s the morning of the 13th, on account of the high water. The wagon meant was a common country single driving wagon, of rough build.

Dr. Chase W. Hewson was called. He lives at River Hibbert, Cumberland Co., N. S. ; was in Shediac 12th October and stayed at the Weldon, House ; was, during the evening in the company of the Dentist Campbell, and thus did not go over to the Waverly House that night. Told Mr. Barnhill that the description of the man | who was in the Waverly House that night | answered to C. C. Hamilton, of Newcastle, in whose company he also was at the Wel- don House during the evening of the 12th. Thought Hamilton enquired there who was keeping the Waverly. Hamilton left the Weldon House that night, which astonished him. He did not know McCarthy.

The next witness was James E. Link- letter, of Moncton. Had seen Mrs. Os- borne and Mr. Osborne at Kirk Hotel, Moncton. They were moving from Shediac to Moncton. This was on a Thursday, and the Osbornes were arrested on Sunday. On meeting Osborne the witness told him he was buying stock for Joshua Corkery, of St. John, and that he had no news save the McCarthy mystery, which was all the talk. Osborne said it was no mystery to him, for he knew two years ago that McCarthy in- tended leaving his wife. Osborne said that McCarthy had left the place ; and witness wondered why deceased had not settled up his business. Osborne said McCarthy would give almost anything to leave his wife. Witness asked Osborne where he thought Mc@arthy was, and he replied that he thought McCarthy was running a house in Ontario. This was in a house in Moncton. They came down stairs; then Osborne went out. Witness asked Mrs. Osborne what she thought had become of McCarthy. She replied she thought he had fallen over the bridge in the Scadouc river, and asked if he was found inthe river with clothes and money and watch on his person, could they do anything on them. He told her no; that people would think he had been drowned. She said Osborne was sick on the 12th Oct.

SATURDAY’S PROCEEDINGS. Sneprac, May 25. Linkletter’s evidence continued :—Cross- examined by Mr. Gilbert: I was in Monc- ton at the time of the investigation; did not think my evidence of suflicient impor- tance to communicate it to the authorities; don’t know Morris O’ Neill; saw no acquain- tance of Annie Parker’s; don’t know her

Wilson it looked like a great undertaking to get the body out of the Waverley House door. He never had any conversation with Harry or Eliza Osborne. Did not go to Osbornes asa spy. Annie Parker’s pub- lished testimony and the Osbornes §state- ments were so different that it weighed heavily on his mind.

Wm. Cummings testifies: He lives in Shediac; is a labourer; has been in P. E. Island the last two months; went there on 15th October, before knowing that Mc- Carthy was missing; came from Charlotte- town yesterday; knows the Osbornes; re- members when they came here in August last, and visited them. He was working at Shediac on October 12th; was not in Os- borne’s house day or night of the 12th, nor the 13th or 14th. Knew McCarthy to. see him; knows nothing about how McGarthy came to his death; had an India rubber coat on; the coat was his brother’s, who got it from Bliss Smith. He was at home about 11 o’clock on the night of the 12th of Oc- tober.

To Mr. Gibert— Had lived in same house with Miss Rielly; was at Joe Oak’s to dance a few nights before he left for the Island; cuuld not swear if dance was the night of the 12th; could not swear Annie Parker wasn’t there; did not see McCarthy among the crowd ; drank a good deal of liquor, but was sober that evening; Charlie Welling was at the spree; Oak’s house is near the river, and there is deep water there.

Mr. Tuck—You remember going home on the night of the 12th Oct., and went to bed. Can’t you tell where you went home from ?

Witness did not remember from where; the folks home said he was in the house

was based on what they said. He drank occasionally at Osborne’s; saw Annie Par- ker there; would not know her on the street: never was a companion of Harry

‘the same way.

To Mr. Gilbert—Had no acquaintance with McCarthy; flever spoke to him in his life. During the spree outside a man was knocked down; helped the man up, but do not know who he was. He was a medium sized man. George McAflee, jr., and Chas. McAffee were there; do not know if the Riley girls were there; did not know them; the man knocked down walked away in the oppusite direction of the Scadous River. The man was not Timothy McCarthy.

Wm. P. Warman lives three miles out of Shediac, and is in E. J. Smith’s employ. Lived here nineteen years. Know Scadouc River very well. Assisted in taking logs up to the mill from the river last fall ; deals from the mill are brought down on rafts, His dwelling is at the mill and was there the night of the 12th of October last. Remember the big storm on Friday, the 12th, because he made repairs at the mill that day, and was ordered to look after lumber adrift in the river. Next morning, Saturday, he came down river to farmer Atkinson’s by horse. The upper bars above the railway crossing were down, and a wagon had gone through. The men, when they saw the wagon track, remarked Mr. Smith had been up very early this morning. Did not notice the length of the track. Went through Atkinson’s lane to the shore of the river. Opened the gate close to the barn, leading frem the lane to the shore. This was about 6.30 in the morning. Drove to the river and got poles, and went back Walked down again that morning about 9.30. the bridge below the mill. After following the bank of the river down, saw a wagon track in the Atkinson field, which went to- wards the shore and returned. Did not notice if this track went all the way to the shore or not. If his memory serves him, the track led toa point where Mr. Smith was in the habit of driving. A wagon on the bank would be about 30 feet from the water. It is about nine feet between high- water mark and the bank of the river. There is a slant of about ten feet from the top of the river to the water. Noticed a wagon on the side of the road running past Atkinson’s on Saturday morning. A man was in the adjoining field, leading a horse harnessed. James Atkinson’s horses were also in the field. He was leading a horse towards the river. The man was distant from witness 250 yards. The strange man’s horse had a white spot on his face and a white hind foot. Did not know the man. A boy about 16 years old was lying in the seat of the wagon. The boy had on a homespun coat, and a rubber on one foot and a shoe on the other. Spoke to the boy, and he replied, but do not remember the answer given.

Mr. Gilbert’s cross-examination brought out nothing new. However, the evidence was not closed, Mr. Gilbert not having fin- ished.

Adjourned until 10 o’clock on Monday.
