Jay Ruzesky Conquers Confederation Centre;

The Winter's Tales Authors Reading Series got off to a great start on Saturday, September 21, with a inspiring performance by poet Jay Ruzesky. The reading, which took place at Confederation Centre Public Library, was Ruzesky's first stop on an East Coast tour which will include five additional performances in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.

Ruzesky's reading was well received by the audience which was largely composed of UPEI students and professors.

Jay's poetry is drawn from an endless variety of sources; however, it manages to hold onto the feeling of being forged from daily life— As he explains, "One of things that I like about poetry is the way it gets me to pay attention to the world. For me writing isn't so much when I'm sitting down and doing it — I tend to think of writing as the rest of the time. I have a little notebook that I carry around with me and when I see things I just jot them down. Usually just a few lines, an idea, an image. It's like a seed. Something to start with."

Jay was born in Edmonton and raised in Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Calgary, and Kelowna,

to the Eastern part of the country: "One of the things that I like about the Maritimes is the sense of community... I've always found a very warm, wel- coming atmosphere when I come here."

Ruzesky's books include "Writing on the Wall", "Am I Glad to See You", "What Was Left of James Dean", "Painting the Yellow House Blue", and "Blue Himalayan Poppies." He is on the editorial board of The Malahat Review, teaches at Malaspina University-College, and lives in Victoria.
