Student: Objection : to Hiring of New Prez
HALIFAX (CUP)-About 40 students at St. Mary's- University last week protested the manner in which the university's new president was being hired.
'Ihe students waited outside the board's . meeting for an hour until the board agreed to let three representatives cone into the closed meeting to present their brief.
'lhe brief charged the Board with giving students insufficient notice of presidential forums as well as poorly advertising them. ' 'Ihe students also did not agree with the procedure which was used to
consider the candidates. Of 60 to 65 applicants, only four were interviewed and the final two candidates' resumes were not shown to students.
'lhe demonstrators told the Board to postpone the election and to reopen nominations.
Ellis was the first tine students were allowed to present a brief to the Board meeting.
Despite the protest, the election took place and Kenneth Ozmon, Dean of Arts from the University of Prince Edward Island, was chosen as president.

The author of S_he_ Stfls to Conquer, Oliver Goldsmith, has a unique reputation in that he excelled in several

His only novel, A Vicar of Wakefield, is a well—known classic. _S_h_e S s to Con r, one of his two plays, has been extrenely popular since it was first produced in 17.73; in fact, it is probably revived as often as any older caredy ' besicbs Shakespeare's. The University 'Iheatre Committee production will be staged in the Steele Recital Hall in mid— March. According to Dr. Pratt, rehearsals will get underway with- in the next few’weeks. He points out that the schedule will be worked around the availability of the cast, but the smaller roles will initially involve one
rehearsal per week .
No previous acting experience is required, but Dr. Pratt says he
would like all inter— ested persons to be prepared to read sene-
thing at the audition.

Many students have already had a bitter taste of the job market that awaits them in their
sumier jd) searches of the last few years. He advised teachers to capitalize on the students' career concerns by making it clear that knowledge of French , offers them an extra qualification in the eyes of the prospective employers.
"A unilingual Canadian in this country, who is not able to break through the language barrier is working with a puzzle from which some of the pieces are missing," he said.
