Mr. Ewen Campbell, who has been teach- ing in West Kent Street School during the past three months, was re-appointed for the balance of the school year, ending 30th June next.

Gooderich (Ont.) advices of the 3rd say : i Ar the assizes to-day the case of Elizabeth Edwards, charged with having, in March, 1888, administered arsenic to her late hus- band, Hugh J. Whitely, with intent to The most important witness for the Crown was a young woman named Minnie Jonnston, who had lived with the Whitelys as a domest'c. She testified that she had pur- chased arsenic for Mrs. Whitely, and had seen her, on several occasions, pat some of it in her husband’s food; that Whitely al- ways became very sick after partaking of the food thus tampered with, and that on her remonstrating with Mrs. Whitely about her conduct, she said she did not think it wasany harm to put a man like Whitely out of the world, Ifthe evidence of this witness is true, the crime was one of the most cold-blooded on record. The defence denies the truth of the girl’s story, and al- leges that Whitely died from natural causes. The druggist from whom the girl alleges she purchased the poison denies having sold any to her, and the doctors called to-day ciffer as to the cause of death. A later despatch says: The poisoning case was concluded this forenoon. His Lord- ship Judge Street charged strongly in favor of the prisoner, and took the ground that the girl Johnston, who was the prin- cipal witness against Mrs, Edwards, if her story was true, was an accomplice, and that her unsupported testimony would not war- rant a conviction. He also pointed out vital discrepancies in the story tuld by the girl Johnston, The jury retired and re-

At the recent meeting of the Marine Board in Halifax, Mr. Frederic K, Nelson passed as mister. Says a London despatch :—‘‘The Marquis of Normandy is dead at Brighton. He was in his72nd year. At different times he held the governorship of Nova Scotia, Queensland, New Zealand and Victoria.” The marqnis was governor of Nova Scotia thirty years ago. Duriug his term of office there were some very stormy political battles. Mrs. Anna Carr died at Geary, Suobury County, N. B., on April lst, aged 100 years and 23 days Judge Ko'sford, of Moncton, is dead. On the evening previous to his death he acci- dentally fell from a window fifteen feet above the grouna. He was a heavy man (about 199 pounds) and was so badly injured that he could not recover.
