Destructive Fire i Carterton, N. B.—A fire broke out about 2 o'clock yesterday morning On the other side of the har- hour which proved quite disastrous. It originated in a house situated on King-street, occupied by Mr. Christopher Male- man, which was totally destroyed, together with several buildings adjoining to the Westward. ‘The loss is estimated as follows :~

Christopher Maleman, iwo story dwelling house, valued at £300, unitsttred ; Wm. Thompson, two story dwelling house, valued at 4400, uninsured; Wm. H. Olive, stores and dwelling, £200, iisured for £400; James Thompson, house oeeupied by T. E. Streek, as a store and dwelling, valued at) £350, uninsured; John Cook, large dwelling and store, valued at £800, ihsured for £500. Another bailding in the rear ofthe one owned by W. H. Qlive, and octupied by labouring families, and uninstred, Was totally destroyed.

Large quantities of goods and household effects were placed in the streets, where they remain, and it is said that the occu- pants of the houses destroyed will find difficulty in procuring tenements, a3 all the houses in Carleton are occupied. The loss, especially at this season of the year, must be severcly felt.

We learn that the Carleton Engine Compatties were early at the seene of disaster, but much difficulty was experienced in obtaining a supply of frater, the tide being low at the time. |

The train, consisting of fouttcen cars, left the depot, on Seventh street, at 9 o'clock, crowded with inyited guests, a half hour after the time advertised. By the time it reached Iiermann this delay was fully recovered, thus shewing the good condition of the track. After leaving Hermann, the train proceeded with good speed, and without the least difficulty, until it reached the Gasconade, when one of the most disastrous | accidents occurred which has yet thrown this city into mourning.

The bridge across that stream gave way, and ten of the ears were precipitated a distance 6f gwenty-five or thiriy feet. The locomotive, from all appearances, had reached the edge of the | first pier, when the structure gave way, and in falling reversed | its position entirely, the frout turning to the east, and the wheels upwards. On the locomotive at the time, were the President, Mr. H. E. Bridge, Mr. O'Sullivan, the Chief Engi- neer of the road, and an additional number of employees.

Mr. Bridge, it is supposed, is the only one saved of the individuals named. An hour after thé disaster voices from | beneath the wreck of the locomécive were heard asking for assistance, and when we left the scene of disaster, active efforte were making to relieve the sufferers. It is possible—nay, it is to be hoped probable, that some of these unfortunates may have been reseued.

The road enters the bridge with a curve, and this cireum- stance, perhaps, prevented the disaster from being more fatal, as the cars thereby were, diverted, and thus prevented from falling directly ina general melee. Enough of injury, however, was accomplished. The baggage car, next the engine, went down, to use the expression of one who was in it ‘‘ extremely | easy,’ without causing any serious casualty. The first and second passenger cars followed, and in these several were killed | and a great number more or less mangled.

In the third car ore or two were killed ofly. This car, altogether in a dangerous position, and almost entirely demolished, was less fatal to life and limb. {n the fourth and

HE subscriber, thankful for the very extensive patronage . ‘receivéd at his establishment at ORWELL for the past twelve years, trusts in future to merit a continuance of public favor, not only at the above establishment, but at his new store at MONTAGUE BRIDGE, which will be conducted on the same

Mechanics’ Institute Soiree.
