Rev. A. E, Burke, of Alberton, was in the city to-day.

Miss Margaret Weeks, whose sad death is recorded in another column, was winner of the Governor-General’s medal in Prince Street School in 1882, when Mr. Mellish was Principal.

It is stated that Rev. B. B. Keefer, well known in Cha:lottetown in connection with his lectures on ‘*The Failure of the Scott Act,” has abandoned the regular temperance platform and returned to his clerical duties purely and simply. He is now engaged in revival work throughout Ontario and is meeting with great success.

AS8t. John despatch says:—B. McCrossin died this afternoon. He came here from P. E. Island forty years ago and for many years kept a grocery on King square, afterwards removing to the store on Sydney street where he has since remained in business

An Ottawa despatch of the 17th says:— Premier McLeod and Provincial Secretary Ferguson, of Prince Edward Island, who have been for the past weck here interviewing the government io regard to matters pertaining to the ‘*Tight Little Island,” left for home this morning, it is understood, well satisfied with the result of their mission.

Referring to a paragraph in one of the Halifax papers, it may be as well to state ) that the young man Carran, who accompanied the missing witness at the time of her sudden cisappearance was recently in the employ of the P. E. Island Hospital for the Insane, and that he has now no situation. Its about a year and a half since he was in the employ of Mr. Arthur Peters.

At Charlottetown, March 18th, after a lin- gering illness of about four years duration (disease of the stomach) Mary Hooper, daughter of Henry Hooper, Sr., and beloved wife of Alexander Horne, (of the firm of A. Horne & Co.) in the 44th year of her age. She lesves behind her a sorrowing husband: and six emall children—two boys and four girls—to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother, besides alarge number of relatives and friends, But their loss is her gain. was badly damaged by wet last season.

The grain is light, bad, and shrivelled, and

for the most part scarcely fit for seed.

Hitherto, the practice was to renew the

seed by exchanging from one locality to

another, and the process was attended with good results. But last year the scourge was general and the usual resource fails.

Apart from the rust{plague altogether, my

opinion is that the drift of the common

black variety of this cereal (the best we have on the Island) has been towards deterioration for several years past, and that an entire renewal of seed from abroad has become a want generally felt and

acknowledged .

The renewal of course would take some years to accomplish. :

In the meantime would you advise an importation by the Local Government of 4 quantity of fresh seed to start with in the spring as a basis for such renewal and if so from what part of Britain, the Continent or elsewhere, would you recommend the im- portation to be made ?

Frem what i know of the prevalence of ‘rust in P. E. 1., during the past year I fully ex- pected that your grain wasseverely injured and Ihave no doubt that its germinating powers are greatly impaired. I have sent to all the newspapers in your Island a copy of a letter on this subject inviting farmers to send samples to the Experimental Farm to be tested and as postage is ies toand from the Farm there should be no reason why farmers should neglect this precaution. I think the course you suggest of the importation of new strains of oats is just what is needed for your people. i have succeeded in obtaining a limited quantity of Black Tartarian oats from Scot- land, which I expect in very shortly. As soon as they come I will mail you a sample bag and I will also send you one of Carter's Prize Cluster Oats, which we have been dis- tributing to a considerable extent among the farmers of the Dominion. We could send a few samples of the black oats to farmers in your Island, but could not supply many. I think we have enough white oats probably to supply any person who would ask. A 3 Ib. bag should produce two or three bushels for next year, and in the course of two or three years this kind of distribution would meet the difficulty, but if it is important that this change of seed should be made on a larger scale, your Local Government might take the matter in hand and obtain a quantity of seed for this purpose to supply the farmers at cost or on such other plan as they considered de- sirable. I think the best Black Tartarian oats can be got from Scotland. We purchas- ed ours from Mr. James Biggar, Dalbeattir, and the price paid him for the grain i: 28 shillings per quarter of 352 lbg. there. The sample from which these were purchased was as fine a sample of Black Tartarianas | have ever seen, and weighed 41 lbs. to the bushel of 34 Ibs.

Montague Notes.

It, is asserted “by late newspapers that Windsor, N. 8., is to the front with heavy ladies, of whom the heaviest is 278. Now there is living in the vicinity of Montague a lady who tips the scales at 324—46 more than the Windsor lady. Besides this, there are several others whose combined weight, if ascertained, would equal if not exceed the total weight of an equal number of Windsor ladies.

As far as heavy men are concerned, Mon- tague will compare very favorably with any other town or village, when population and distance are taken into consideration. Take, for instance, a distance of 1756 feet on the same strect, and on the same side of the street, and there are found four men, all actively engaged in their various duties ot life, weighing respectively 265, 230, 219 and 217, making a total of 931 lbs. Taking all together, it would be hard to find four sueh well-proportioned and good-looking gentlemen in any other part of the Do- minion. In fact, Montague is noted for good-looking people. When Mr. A. C. Macdonald was up to Ottawa attending to his legislative duties, the Ottawa papers de- clared that he was the handsomest member in the House of Commons, and the state- ment has never been contradicted.

Mr. Peter Gordon, our attentive and obliging Postmaster, is giving universal satisfaction. Although quite unostenta- tious in manner, yet his whole desire is to perform the duties of his office to the satis- faction of the public and with credit to himself.

A very flattering compliment was paid to one of our medical gentlemen a short time ago. Having been summoned a dis- tance of about twenty miles to visit a sick person he hastily arrived at his destination and was accordingly ushered into the sick room. While examining his patient, he was at the same time taking in the sur- roundings, and at once concluded that the prospects of getting his fee was very uncer- tain, even inthe dim future. He said to the sick lady: *‘ How is it that you sent such a long distance for me, when you knew that you would not be able to pay me?” Her reply was: ‘**Shure. that is all true, but when I was sending for a duc- tor | thought I might as well send fora good one.”

Little W— is a bright little fellow, at- tending one of our schools. Being rather late one morning his teacher said that all allowance would be made as he was the baby. Little W—, straightening himself up, and standing on his dignity, exclaimed, ** He would not be the baby very much longer, as he heard his mamma tell his papa so this morning.”

The ice on the river is fast breaking up. The roads are in an almost impassible state. The consequence is that trade is very dull at present.
