A farmer named Robert Stewart was waylaid, robbed and brutally murdered, near Port Hope, Ontario. His body was found on the road, on Wednesday, in a frightful condition.

riage and two back-boards, of Canadian make, from a Quebec manufacturer, for Cyprus.
The Cabinet was in council again to-day. Nothing new has transpired, but a rumor is afloat that Parliament will be called to meet for the despatch of business about the iniddle of November. Nothing definite can be known before Tuesday or Wednesday next,

New York, Oct. 4.
The Telegram says: ‘* A despatch was received in this city this morning from the leading sporting men at Auburn to the effect that the most intense feeling exists in that city against Courtney, as they believe he sold the race. A large number congre- gated at Cosgrove & Miller’s place in Gene- seo Street, and it was proposed by some to drive Couriney out of the town when he should return home. Many have lost heavily on Courtney, mostly merchants, who helped to subseribe funds to aid him,
in the hope of bringing the race to Owasea Lake.

The rumor of the betrothal of Prince Louis Napoleon to Princess Thira of Den- mark is revived.
The British brig Anglo, from St. John, N. B., for Queenstown, was sighted on 5th of September with her foremast and jib- boom gone, and ten feet of water in her hold. She refused assistance.
Lonpon, Oct. 4.
In reference to the statement published yesterday in the Morning Advertiser, that the Admiral of the East Indian squadron had been ordered to send a number of ves- sels into the Persian Gulf, a despatch from Constantinople says : ‘* Layard, the Bri- tish Ambassador to Constantinople, is in- formed that the pirates have made their appearance in the Persian Guif and Gulf of Volo, and has asked permission from the Porte to send British men-of-war to oper- ate against thein.”

A despatch from Florence says the popu- lation is excited because a member of the International was killed in a duel by an officer of a bersaglieri regiment. The troops are confined to barracks, and it is hoped agitation will subside without dis- turbance.
VIENNA, Oct. 4,
The following official telegram has been received : ‘‘Serajevo, Oct. 4.—The Aus- trians entered Vesegroid this morning, un- opposed. The insurgents evacuated their entrenchments, abandoning tents, cannon and allammunition. The Austrians entered Gasazda yesterday unopposed, and to-day occupied it. The Cajuica district of Fagia is cleared of insurgents, and thus the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina is subdued, and the country in our hands.

‘“‘All the consummate rascality of the Jacques Cariicr election has at length been revealed by means ef the detectives. In number 2 poll, St. Ann’s, 50 ballots for Girouard were extracted, and 50 for Laflamme substituted. The ballot box was placed cn a side-board over a trap, and aman in the cellar took it in, made the change, and returned it to his place, while the returning officer went for a glass of brandy to cure a sudden and convenient colic. Girouard’s majority is at least 40, and Laflamme claimed only 13. There is great amusement and indignation over the clumsy bit of villainy. The Sun remarks that: “Tf the Pr- mier had expected the overthrow of his party he would have acted very differently. As it is, he has involved himself in some rather perplexing snarls, depending -on a Parliamentary majority to get him out of them. There is the Pembina Branch Rail- way contract, for instance. He asked, last session, for power to lease that road to an American Company, of which Mr. Donald A Smith is a member, for ten years, and the Senate defeated the bill. ‘Very well,” said Mr. McKenzie, ‘‘we will act without the Senate’s leave. The House of Com- mons is at my back, and I will do asI please.” And then he went on with his long-lease scheme, to give Mr. Smith’s Minnesota company a ten years’ monopoly of the carrying trade of the North Wost, in the confident belicf that the noxt House of Commons would endorse his action. Now, when he looks forward to a meeting with a House of Commons which has no confidence in him, he must be sorely perplexed in re- gard to this business. Should he ever be- come Premier again he will not be likely to violate the law with the expectation that a Parliament to be elected will condone the offence.

A Bucharest despatch says it is rumored that there wili be a new convention be- tween Russia and Roumania, which will give to the former the right of passage through Dobrudja in case of further wars with Turkey.
The Glasgow *‘ Herald” says that rumors are current that some of the directors of the Glasgow bank received enormous ad- vances out of the funds they were admin- istering. It is reported that a large ship- building firm in Glasgow failed.
The totaljliabilities of Smith, Fleming & Co., are estimated at $10,000,000. The liabilities of their corresponding firms, which fail with them (Wm. Nichol & Co., of Rombay, and Fleming & Co., of Kur- rachee), are considerably lower.
A Denver special says it is reported that the Cheyennes are committing horrible outrages east of Denver and north of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, killing ranchmen, burning shanties, etc. Thirty-seven men are reported to have been killed at Buffalo Station.
A despatch from Simla says the British forces have advanced to oecupy Jamrood, at the north of Khyser Pass. The Ameer is making a levy and thousands are flocking to him. An advance on Cabul is soon to be made. A St. Petersburg despatch says the Russian papers are increasingly saucy relative to Afghanistan.
A despatch from Kasaulie says a move- ment against Cabul will begin immediately] A similar despatch reports that no commu- nication has been received from the Ameer. The natives bring dewn word that the Ameer is collecting his forces from all quar- ters to meet the advance of the English.
The ‘‘ Times” financial article says : ‘‘ The revelation of the details of the failure of the Glasgow bank is accompanied with no fresh signs of disturbance in money market, and a calmer feeling prevails.’ The ‘‘ Financier” estimates that the share- holders of the Glasgow bank must meet the deficit of $20,000,000.
A considerable increase occurred in the yellow fever mortality at Memphis yester- day, seventy-one fatal cases being reported, against forty-two on Friday. There were sixty-six deaths in New Orleans yesterday, and two hundred and ninety-eight new cases reported. Reports from various points in Mississippi show that the scourge
