Kinetic Sculptures Help Provide Creative Stimulus For Children l

Kinetic sculpture. a form of ab- stract art beco ' easingly popular in Canada, is being put to practical use by an llmglirh hos- pital and a Japanese dentist.

Often made of brass and tin in strange shapes. the sculptures, or "mobiles" as they are sometimes called hang from wires and move as currents of air strike them. They can also be made from paper or plastic.

In the children's ward of Whit- tington Hospital. London, the mo- biles are practically as good as medicine.

"When children are sick they need color and movement and beauty all the more." said Dr. Si- mon Yudkin who sponsored the idea at the hospial.

Stimulates Imagination

"During the day, toys and books contribute something but often it is after dusk when these are put away that home seems far away and tears are the result. It is at this time the mobiles hung on the cote have been so rewarding."

"The youngsters imaginations are stimulated to an extraordinary degree by the twisting and shim- mering shapes and the play of light and shade on the metal," he said.
