Death of Mr. W. A. Lefargey.

We deeply regret (o report the death of Mr. W. A. Lefurgey, son of the late Hon,

John Lefurgey. The sad event occurred at

Georgetown at half-past sx o'clock this morning. Mr. Lefurgey has long been in delicate health. On Friday last he took passage inthe 5. 5. Stanley, in the hepe that removal to a more moderate climate together with a change of air, would have a beneficial effect. We learn that he was il all the time he was on board; and that when the Stanley returned to Georgetown yesterday alternoon—having been unable to make the passage—he was very ill indeed. Dectors Barnes and Stewart, of George- town, were at oave called, and had him carefully removed to the house of Mr. Aitken. Recognizing that their patient wa, in imminent danger, they communicated with his family in Summerside. Mrs. Le- furgey, his mother, and his brother-in-law, J.E Wyatt, Esq., at once proceeded to Georgetown-—accompanied by the family physicians —by special tram They arrived there about one o'clock this morning, —but

only to be present as the life of the loved one ebbed out. It is consoling to learn that Mr. Lefurgey suffered no pain and that he died happy. His bereaved and widowed mother and her family have, we feel sure, the sympathy of the community

in this hour of sorrow.

Prices of Coal.

Ir seems quite clear that, in any event, the people of Canada will have to psy higher prices for coal as a result of the Whitney deal. The competition which has kept down prices has been destroyed. A coal manager at Pictou, interviewed, a

few days ago, said :

** With regard to the price of coal, it hes been sold in the upper provinces for years past at prices which yielded no profit. Ihe com- petition between the different compsoies was so keen, each individual company being 80 anxious to secure large contracts, that they cut prices to such an extent as ty make the business very unprofitable. With fewer com

snies in the field this competition will be mone done away. In the past, owing to this competition, coal bas been sold in Monte real as cheap as in the local or home mat ket. This is a hardly reasonable condition of affairs. Under the business conditions which this scheme opens up, it is possible that large railway comp soies aod gas companies may pay a little more for their coal, but there would

still be competition enough between the Cape Breton mines owned and controlied by this company and the other mines in Nova Scotia

—A defeated and discredited President of the United States has been appointed 1 judge of thé Supreme Court of the United States. In Canada such an act on the part of a Premier who had been defeated at the polls, would be highly improper. But in the United States—it's al! right.

—In the United States Commercial Un- ion or Unrestricted Recirprocity is regarded as but the preliminary to annexation. The Cumming Bill provides that ‘** there shall be a commercial union between the two countries until the Dominion is admitted.” This fact is death to the Unrestricted Reci- procity ‘‘fad” so far as Canada isconcerned.

—Aprop os of Russian seizures of British sealing vessels, and the treatment accorded the crews of the seiz°d vessels, Sir Edward Girey stated in Parliament the other day that the British ambassador at St. Peters burg had been instructed to ask that an enquiry be made into the matter and that redress be furnished. The Russian Gov- ernment had promised both. Some time must elapse, however, he added, before the question is settled. Coniinuing, Sir Ed- ward stated that another question was pending with Russia. The latter's claims to the Pamir country, revived through 4 collision between Afghans and Russians at Samsatash in July last, is at the present moment under discussion by the two Gov- ernments.

Boryep to Deatu.—A terrible and fatal accident happened at Richibucto the other day to an eighteen months’ old child of Robert Lennox, a farmer residing a short distane abd¥e Kiugston. The child was sitting io front of an open stove in a room in which a number of children were playing, while Mre, Lennox had gone down cellar for a few min- utes in the performance of the household duties. Attracted by screams, she returned te find the child enveloped in flames. The fire was smothered aa soon as possible, but too late to prevent ite deadly effects. The child lived only three hours, the flimes having entered ite moath and burned internally. The fire is supposed to have origivated from a spark falling on its clothing.

Frre Nores.—The arbitrators are at work te-day estimating the damage done to Messrs, J. M. McLeod & Co's. stock by the recent fire. Mr. R. K. Jost is acting for the insurance companies interested; Mr. Berj. Rogers is looking after Mr. McLeod's interests, and Mr. C. B. Warren is refereo.

Mr. E. L. Philps, lospector of the British American Insurance Company, arrived

this afternoon to look after the iaterests of the several companies concerned in the loss- es eusteined by Messrs Chappelle and Carter.

Mr. Theo. L. Chappelle is now doing brai- odes in one of the stores in the new Stamper Bloek.

THE “‘AT HOME” LAST EVENING.

Tue “At Home” given by the manage- ment of the Y. M. C. A. last evening to in- troduce the General Secretary, Mr. Ray- mond, and to open the season's work prov- ed a decided success. A large number of young men were present and the expres- sions of kindly fellowship and ready sym- pathy which were to be met with on all sides promise well for the future of the in- stitution.

The programme was opened with a quar- tette by Messrs. Davison, Turaer, Moore and Raymond, which called forth much fa- vorable comment. The President, Mr Fitzgerald, then in a brief and stirring ad- dress, jad before his audience the objects and aims of the institution. He dwelt es- pecially upon the fact that the work of the institution, 1 all its branches, physical, in- tellectual and spiritual, was in the fullest a religious work—a christian work—viz., the building up of fully developed christian young men. Towards this end the ¥. M. O, A. offer the yeung men of Char lottetown « good gymnasium, with com- pentent instruction, a reading room which is provided with an excellent selection of newspapers and magazines, educational classes in French, writing and arithmetic. He was also happy to be able to announce that a series of weekly “*talks had been arranged for, to commence oD Friday evening next, with an address from the Master of the Rolls. He dwelt upon the great need there was in Charlottetown of a good reference library, and ex the hope that before the present year has closed this would be added tothe many other attractions of the ¥Y. M.C. A, Fur. ther recognizing that man is a social animal, che management intended to at once fur- nish the parior comfortably, so that the young men could use it as a club room, in which they could spend their spare mo- ments in games, conversation oF reading. Lastly, he cal'ed their attention to the meetings held every Sunday afternoon at four e’clock, and urged all his hearers to come and take advanfsge of them.

After a most pleasing duet from Mrs. A. A. McLean ana Miss Daisy Lewis, Judge Hensley, in a short address, gave his hear- ers the benefit of his thirty-seven years’ experience with the Y. M. C. Association both here and abroad. He said that he could not too strongly express his belief in the great benefits which a Young Men's Christian Association conferred upon the community, and that many of the happiest experiences of his life were connected with his labors in Association work. He would strongly advise every young man to become a member and give all the assistance that lny in his power to making the work of the imstitution « success.

Professor Vinnicombe next favored the audience with « violin solo which was enthusiastically enoored .

The Rev. J. A. Gordon, representing the Ministerial Association, then delivered a powerful and effective address, putting clearly before his hearers what should be the true object of Christian Association work, viz., man-building, the culture and development cf the physical, satellectual and spiritual powers with -which man is endowed. And in this work he, speaking in behalf of the Ministerial Association, assured them the heartiest sympathy and co-operation of that body.

Mr. John Lewis next sang a very pleas- ing solo accompanied by Miss Fraser on the piano and Mr. Mitchell oo the cornet.

Mr. ©. B. Warren’s reading of ‘* The Light on the Range,” was most pathetically rendered and thoroughly appreciated. Messrs. Raymond and Mitchell foilowed in « cornet duet which was well received.

Being called upon by the President, Mr. Raymond took the platform, and in a few manly remarks announced his intention of identifying himself with Charlottetown and Charlottetown young men, and called upon his hearers to unite with him towards mak- ing the Charlottetown Y. M. ©. A. the most flourishing association in the Maritime Provinces.

Hon. David Laird followed with a few sensible and practical remarks, after which Messrs. Moore, Turner, Raymond and Mitchell favored the audience with another quartette.

‘The audience then repaired to the base- ment and did full justice to the refresh- ments so generously provided by the lady friends of the association.

J. Heber Haslam, of the C. P. R., Moncton, was registered at the Hotel Davies yesterday afternoon.

Joba F. Campion, a native of Souris, was one of the speakers at the Burns’ anniversary banquet ab ville, Col. In response to the toast “‘Scotchmen Abroad,” Mr. Campion made an able and eloquent address.

The Bridgetown Murder.

SOME PARTICULARS. A despatch from Annapolis furnishes particulars of the murder at Bridgetown, N.S. which have not yet been published here. A. D. Cameron, a former merchant and citizen, voluntarily gave up business within # year and retired to a house of Mr. Farnsworth at Hampton, on the bay shore, while his wife boarded at Bridgetown. Owing to business reverses and other causes, Mr. Came:o. was slightly weak mentally. Of late he was growing better. Last Thursday evening his wife went over the mountain to see him, but before leav- ing Bridgetown provided herself with thirty grains of morphine from a druggist named Taylor, who, by the way, turns out not to be registered under the laws of Nova Scotia. On arriving at the place where Cameron boarded, Mrs. Cameron told her husband that she had a presentiment the night before that he would surely die, and that she knew he was getting worse. Her actions excited the suspicion of Mr. Farnsworth, who advised Cameron not to take anything from her. After some time hed passed that evening Mrs. Cameron prevailed on Mrs. Farnsworth to make a cup of tea for her husband (Cameron), which was done, Mrs. Cameron taking the bread and tea into his room for him. She soon came out and stated that Mr.Cameron wanted another cup of tea, which with more bread was given. A short time after pertaking of the tea Cameron retired fur the night to wake no more. His heavy breathing at- tracted the rest of the household and a doctor was sent for, who pronounced Cam- eron dead trom apoplexy. Nasty rumors began to make headway, particularly as Cameron's body was about to be shipped off to Pictou, where he formerly belonged, for interment, his bereaved wife not even com- ing to Bridgetown with the remains. Cor- oner Primrose had the body taken into his custody as it was about to put on board the morning train, and taken to the court- house.’ A jury was summoned, who at once heard evidence, in substance as above des- cribed, resulting in a post mortem examina- tion being held. Drs. DeBlois, Barnal y, and Freeman held the post mortem, and found the brain net having the slightest sigu of spoplexy, of which he was supp sed to have died. The kidneys were alsv fairly sound. The stomach, etc., have been sent to Hali- fax for analysis. Mrs. Cameron procured the morphine from Taylor on the plea that she said she took it herself. The strange part not explained is how tbe druggist sold her so much when one-eighth of a grain makes a dose. It appears that if the coun- ty of Annap lis would have to pay some for expenses of inquest. snenscanetitli siti adit ain

European Armies.

The discussion of the Army Bill has‘ brought, among other facts, the ane that in the last twenty years Germany has spent $3,000,000,000 on her army, and that during the same period France has spent $3,650,000,000, both of these enormous sums being devoted exclusively to land forces, and not in any way including the amount spent in connection with the naval defence. These sums are also exclusive of | the amounts paid for pensions. Such fig- ures as these couvey no very definite im- pression; the mind is not able to grasp their significance on account of their vast- ness. If it were possible to make the peo- ple of France and Germany realize what this enormous military establishment has cost them it is not too much to expect that a reaction would at once set in; and yet, these sums cover only one side of the ex- pense of the military fystem. They do not represent the economic loss of the with- drawal of such immense numbers of men from all kinds of productive pursuits. The period during which this money has been spent has been a period of absolute peace, and the question at once arises, if peace has become so expensive, what would war mean in the way of financial expenditure and national exhaustion? The very excess to which the present wmilitary tendency is carrying Europe must eventually accomplish what the peace societies have sv far tried in vain to accomplish. Canada should beware of militarism.

THE CASE OF MABEL HALLER. Mrs. Stevens Charged With Murder.

Preliminary Examination. Moncton, Feb. 7.

The jury, in the inquest on the body of Mabel Hallet Stevens, returned a verdict yesterday, as follows: ‘*We find Mabel Glennie Hallet Stevens came to her death by a shock, the result of ill-treatment from Jane Stevens, wife of H. J. Stevens.

Crown Prosecutor Chandler at ence put himself in telegraphic communication with Attorney General Blair, and acting upon instructions, put Mrs. Stevens'under arrest charged with murder.

An Unhappy Woman Determined to Kill Herself.

ANNAPOLIS, Feb. 7.

Mrs. Cameron, in jail charged with pois- oning her husband, has made three at- tewpts to take her life since Saturday. The third one was yesterday afternoon when she opened the veins in her arm with apin. She is determined to kill herself, she says, and refuses to eat or drink.
