Governor Robinson on P. E. Island and Canada.

GOVERNOR Rosrxson,-— the _Jast governor sent by Great Britain to this is'and,— lately delivered a lecturi entitled “On Duty in Many Lands,” in which be gives his impressions of the verious colonies in which he has held office. These include the West Iudies, (Montserrat and Dominica,) the Falkland Is'ands, Prince Edward Island, West Australia, the Straits Settlements in the Strait of Malacca, the Malay Peainsula, West Australia and South Australia were heis now stationed. The lecture was delivered before the Young Men's Cristian Association in Adelaide. It is | of interesting information, respecting a! the colonies named; and the account given of the Island, as to position, his- tory, polities, society, requirements and eepabilities, is one of the truest and best we have seen in print.

The Concert Last Evening.

Club, assisted by the City Cornet Band, gave a musical cntertainment in Y. M.

| On Thursday evening the Emerson Glee C. A, Hall, toa highly appreciative audi-

evce. The Concert was a grand musical success, under the directorship of Prof. | ‘ ° y . | Friese. The opening overture by the Bind |

with excellent execution. In the ‘* White Squall,” Mr. Beer enunciated his words well, and gave evidence of a thoroughly trained voice. The ‘‘ Hunter’s Chorus” was simply grand, the voices beautifully blending together in a free and unaffected manner pleasing to all. This was really the piece of the evining. The Band executed the ‘‘ Andante and Waltz’ selection well. Mr. Kane’s solo was very sweet, and the words plainly uttered—the encore, ‘‘The old Oaken Bucket” was good. In the ‘‘Belfry Tower,” the execution was perfect, the ‘“‘cres’ and ‘‘dim” passages were grand, andthe exact ness with which the directr’s baton was followed, proved the thoroughness of their drill. The trio, ‘‘O Restless Sea,”’ brought out the rich, deep tones of the Professor’s voice, and was rapturously encored. The solo, ‘‘Sleep Well,” by Miss Knight, fully established her character asa singer. The encore ‘“‘Stilly Night,” so familiar to the audience, was sung very sweetly. The ‘Mountain Miner,” was the most difticul: to render of theentire programme, being composed of broken time throuvhout, yet, not a single mistake occurred. Miss Bessie Lewis, who accompanied all the pieces sung showed her quickness in adapting herself to the various styles introduced. At the close,the band, club, and audience heartily joined in rendering the National Anthem. We congratulate the Emerson Club on the good impression made upon the public, by the efficiency manifested at this concert, and irust that our citizens may have many opportunities of listening to the well cultivated voices of our young friends SPECTATOR.

ANOTHER OPINION.

A small and not very enthusiastic aud - ence assembled in the Y. M.C. A. Haii last evening to listen to the concert given by the Emerson Glee Club, assisted by the City Cornet Band, under the direction of Mr. Worth. I honestly confess that I was disappointed, not at the instrumental por- tion of the entertainment, for that was rendered in « manner creditable to the per- formers, and, I believe, was fully appreci- ated and enjoyed by the audience. Miss Findlay’s piano solo, ‘*The Witches Dance,” was perhaps the most pleasing feature of the evening. We hope to hear her per- form many times during the Concert season. As to the vocal portion of the pro- gramme I must eay it was but indifferently rendered. The Club sang several glees, which went off very well, particularly the Jast two, although I think thev would have been improved had the bass been heavier. Four of the members of the Club sang a quartette. I hope to offend none when I say that a waut of sympathy and blending of the voices was noticeable, and the parte were not equally balanced, the bass being too light and the tenor deficient in clearness of tone, and not atall blending with the other parts; moreover, they sang out of tune. The solos, ‘‘ The Old Sexton,” by Mr. Peters, and *‘The White Sgqnall,” by Mr. Beer, | have heard sang on several occasions in this city, and in a much more finished and pleaving manner than they were last evening. Nevertheless they re ceived a vigorous encore from the musica! critics in the back seats. Mr. Kane sang a pleasing song in a very pleasing voice. He received the most hearty encore of the even- ing, and responded with a verse of the “Old Oaken Bucket” Miss Knight sang “Sleep Well” in her usual quiet style, and received an encore to which she responded. The Trio, “O Restless Sea,” by Miss Knight and Messrs. Kane and Frieze was well sung, and also received an encore, Miss Lewis, the Accompanist, performed her part admirably. Towards the close, Mr. Frieze thanked the audience for their patronage and attention.

Supper at Crapaud.!

The supper, in aid of the Presbyterian manee at Hampton, which took place at Crapaud Corner, on Wednesday evening, the Srd inst., proved a great success, not- withstanding the fact that the weather was very unfavorable. Abont $120 were realized. One of the most interesting features of the entertainment was an election to ascertain who was the most popular man in the dis- trict. Measrs. O B. Wadman, William Patrick and John Mc®ae were selected by the committee to run as candidates: and, after a lively contest, uhe following result was declared :—

He was sold for $150 to Mr. Thomas Essory, who resold him for $200 to Mr. Keegan, of Augusta. We learn the owners of Bijou have been offered $12,000 for him. Daring Escape of a Convict from Kingston Penitentiary.

A few days ago William Johnson, alias Jacobs, made his escape from the Kingston Penitentiary at considerable peril to his neck. Before taking his usual exercise in the dome of the prison as usual or. Sanday he made a dummy and placed it in his bed ia the cell, slipped out of sight into the south wing, and worked a way between the dead walls to the roof. At the top he struck astone and cement wall and broke through and got upun the roof. With the aid of a bell cord he made a descent to the yard, passed the guard-house, spliced a tadder, scaled the walland was free. He was not missed until next morning, and when the dummy was discovered and did not rise when ordered the guard reported te the Deputy Warden that the convict was dead.

A Gaelic Idyl in New York.

The New York society for the preserva- tion of the Irish language has for its object, the encouragement of the siudy and _ the disseminatiom of Irish literature, the culti- vation and practice of the national wusie of Ireland, and the establishment in that city of an Irish literary institute. The society aiso desires to encourage a familiar use of the language by those who know how to speak it, and to cffer premiums for pro- ficiency in its study. Their was produced at Steinway Hall Thursday night, for the first time, a new work composed for the society by Mr. Pan] MacSwiney. Its title was ‘An Bard ’Gus an’ Fo,’ which means in English ‘The Bard and the Knight.’ The work is a Gaelic Idyl, and the chorus sing- ers who assisted in its presentation were residents of New York.
