I understand that Iome reference to this statement has been made over American radio stations-and that. it has been drawn to the at- tention of the President of the United States.

Lest there should be any misap- prehension in the United States-I mould like to make the following comment:-

1. The statement of the Premier of Ontario does not represent my view—-nor the view of the depart- ment of naval services-nor the view of the government of this country.

2. The dispositions of naval ves- sels are not like the movements of certain Hollywood actresses. Not always can they be made known to the world. There are usually very excellent reasons why they should not be made known. But the fact that ilie disposition and move- ments of ships are not known. is not to be taken as an indication that they are in hiding,

3. Japanese treachery at Pearl Harbor dealt s. heavy blow to the United States fleet-but notwith- standing. it is mighty and powerful. The courage of is personnel has nlr-andy been proved-and will, I know—bc further proved whenever the opportunity offers.

4. This country has every reason to be eternally grateful for (lie moral signport and the material aid that has come to us and our cause from the United States. A vcar and a half ago-and long before the country entered the war-she gavo to the Royal Navy 43 destroyers- and seven destroyers to the Canad- lan navy. These have proved to bc of the greatest value.

Furthermore—at this very mom- ent-ships carrying the American flag are engaged along wit: Can- adian shins of war-in nrotectnrs! convoys that are sailing from the American continent to the United Kingdom. They certainly are nct in hiding. '

It is no secret- to say that vessels of the United States navy are dis- persed in two great oceans -the Atlantic and the Pacific. I shall not say where these vessols are-

nor in what strength ti": stand. But I can say thist-Ea'l of these United States naval forces repre-

sents "a fleet in bcingW-and there- fore each constitutes a threat a- galnst any enemy attccnpt to 0111")’ the war into the vicinity of the coast-line of North America.
