DETROIT. July 9 -- (AP) -- Chryslcr Corporation announced today that virtually all its Mirn- sive Michigan operations will hr closed down for lack of steel by next Monday night.

The shutdown will affect about 88,000 workers. Of these, 14,500 will he recalled to fake inventory.

Will Replace Maggie Within Three Years

OTTAWA. July 9 -(CP) .. A new aircraft carrier designed to fit into the jet-aviation age is being built for the Royal Canadian Navy in a Belfast, Northern Ireland, shipyard.

She will cost more than 320,000.- 000 and is scheduled to replace the navy's one carrier, the 18,000-ton Magnificent within two or three years. Construction of the ship was started a few years ago for the Royal Navy but never was com- pleted.

The newcomer, yet unnamed,will be thorolighiy modern and capable of handling jet aircraft with a new British device nicknamed the "Steam Slingshot" which hurls them into action. ,

one big difference will be that Canada will own her outright while she has had the Magnificent -biggest ship in the fleet4on a loan basis from the Royal Navy for several years. The Maggie was launched late in the war and com- missioned in 1948.

Canada is buying the new carrier so she can incorporate in her cer- tain American and Canadian de- velopments which the R. C. N. would like to have for its small. four-squadron air arm. she will be heavy with radar and submarine- detecting gear. Canadian officers will go to Belfast to hclp supervise construction. g'I'he new ship will be a so-called light carrier of about. the same tonnage as the Magnificent. She will become the queen of the ion- ship navy Canada plans to have by 1954, a fleet consisting of two cruisers, 25 destroyers and escort vessels and other smaller craft.

Murder Trial

A sharp verbal battle between opposing, counsel yesterday after- noon featured the opening of the trial of Joseph Gabriel MacDon- ald, Chepstow, charged with the murder of Mrs. John (Mary Ann) MacKinnon. Little Harbour. The trial opened in Supreme Court. Georgetown, with the selection of the petit jury in the morning.
