Bernadine Hall News

It has been a while but yes, we girls and guts of Bernadine are here to tell you what is going on with our residence. Some of you may think Bernie Hall doesn’t do much more than harbour book- worms, alcoholics and other “tal- ented” occupents. But that isn’t so!

The Residence Life Commit- tee organized a very successful hour of skating for both Marion and Bernadine Thursday Feb.8. And to prove just how gracious a hostess we are there were cookies and hot chocolate served. Now if that doesn’t impress you in the slightest you probably can’t skate anyway!!

Next on our busy agenda is a Balderdash tournament. This starts Tuesday Feb.6 through to Monday Feb.12. This game will provide ones vocabulary to

broaden greatly. So the next time you are at the Barn and some-

one is hitting on you, you can turn and tell them to take a ‘y- ing FARTLEK, they won’t know what you are talking about! But it will most likely get rid of them!

Keep in mind Feb 10 also my

friends! This is when we have our annual sleigh ride! This will be from 7-8 pm and transporta- tion leaves from the residences at 6:30 pm. It will cost $3.00 per person; but always keep in mind we are BACKING THE CAT!! Last year’s sleigh ride proved to be a great time. And we aren’t just saying that! When you think about it why would we do it again this year if it was a drag last year? So get your blankies and thermos full of hot chocolate and your best ghost story and get out there!

Now may be you aren’t into the outdoors thing if you are too sophisticated and suave to be around smelly hourses, we here at residence take that into consider- ation also. For these people and everyone else we have the UPEI semi-formai. This will be held at the Charlottetown Ballroom on Saturday March 3rd. It will be $12.00 a couple, with Sights And Sounds providing music from 9- 1 pm. We would really like to see everyone jump into their best duds and grab a date and join in. Tickets are available in Bernadine Rm 208 and 312 and Marian 213

Institute of Island Studies

The 1990 Island Lecture Se- ries, entitled “A Place Apart: Is- lands in Nature and Culture,” is now underway on Monday nights at 8 pm in the Hon. George Coles Building on Richadmond Street, announced Harry Baglole, Direc- tory of the Institute of Island Studies.

“Because of the long-standing controversy about the fixed link islands and their characteristics are very mush in the public mind,” says Mr. Baglole. “The series deals with questions about islands including: What, if any- thing, is so special about islands? And what features do islands ev- erywhere have in common?”

Biologist Dr. David Cairns, and Islander by birth, gave the

first lecture on Monday, Febru-

ary 19 on “ Islands in Nature’s Eye.” the following Monday, pat Wootton, Owner of Thomas and Herring Islands near Murray har- bour, PEI, spoke about the spiri- tual qualities of island living in a talk entitled “No Man Can Be an Island”.

March 5 — Kenzie MacNeill, “Cape Breton and Cultural meta- morphosis.”

March 12 - Eric Ross, “Pic- tou Island: The Rise and Fall of an Island Community.”

March 19 - Wayne Wright, “The magic Island: Prince Ed- ward island in Literature and Legend.”

March 26 — Wayne Bar- rett, “Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence: An Illustrated Talk.”

Next winners were The Flam- ing Fourth Floor Trio! their vic- tory was made easy by Louis.M., andy.f.( their recruit from Mar- ian) and Tanya.W. Better luck in your next game. But look out Samantha, Sandi and Tiffany, the tournament is not over yet!

“We are pleased with the ever-growing popularity of the Is- land Lecture Series,” says Mr. Baglole. “We hope Islanders will find this series as exciting and in- teresting as those held in years past. We plan to hold shorter ver- sions of the series in Summerside and Montague in April and May.”

The Island Lecture Series is sponsored by the institute of Is- land Studies with assistance from the St. Dunstan’s University Fund and the Prince Edward is- land Museum and Heritage Foun- dation.

Crime Stoppers Successful in First. Year

During it’s first full year of op- eration, Crime Stoppers of PEI has had a significant impact on the solving of criminal offences across the province. Crime Stop- pers received a total of 423 calls during the 1989 calendar year. This resulted in the recovery of nearly eleven thousand dol- lars worth of property, and drug seizures of over three thousand dollars The work of PEI Crime

Stoppers assisted the police forces in the province in the laying of 110 charges and the solving of 57 cases. A total of $1750 was paid out in Crime Stopper tipsers awards.

Crime Stoppers of PEI was es- tablished in late 1988 with the

board of directors recruited from business and community leaders across the Island. The of, ial launching of the program. took

place in early January of 1989. The phones for Crime Stoppers are operated by police represen- tatives.

So that just goes to show you, that yes the residence is more than studyholics and rumours. Congradulations are in order for 3rd floor Bernadine Hall. They are in first place for intramu- ral points within the building; and the Bernadine girls Intramu- ral Basketball team came in third place in the playoffs.

Come on girls (guys) let’s show this campus where the real spirit is!

The square is packed, the move is on Towards greater freedom and peace. Tents are set up, the posters go up. The noise makes it very hard to sleep. “Enough already”, the students yell.

Voices of the intellect.
