Tue Copan.—The steamer Coban en route from Quebec to Charlottetown, came in collision with the sunken lightship at Tra- yerse, a short distance from Quebec, and as a result had to return to port. Upon examina- tion the damages were found to be slight, and she will resume work at once, sailing for this port to-morrow.

Fact Herning.—Fishermen in the eastern section of the Island have been doing good work lately catching herring, Some of the nets set off Souris were filled with herring larger and of better quality than any that have been taken for years back. Several of the fishermen caught ten, fifteen and twenty barrels each, while Edward Cheverie, ,the highliner, caught thirty barrels.

Fine.—We regret to learn that the horse- stable, new barn, full of hay, grain, straw, etc., a straw shed and many utensils in the farmstead of Mr. Samuel Drake, West River, were destroyed by tire om Sunday afternoon. A, Starr, Captain Ferguson, from Hali- fax vta intermediate ports, and which was delayed somewhat by unfavorable weather, arrived here at eleven o’clock yesterday fore- noon. She brought a cargo of general mer- chandise, and had Mr. A. L. Bridges as_pas- senger from Port Hastings. She is now being loaded with canned meats, oats, pressed hay, ete., and will sail on return about midnight.

Tue First Meetinc.—The first annual meeting of the Literary and Scientific LInsti- tute will be held in Caledonia Club Room to- morrow (Tuesday) evening at 8 o'clock, when the officers for the comiug year will be ap- pointed. The President will also deliver his opening address with an account of last year’s work, Other matters of importance will be discussed at the meeting, and a full attend- ance of members and others interested is respectfully requested.

Mauve a Horse.—A young man named Archibald McCormack, living in the neigh- borhoed of Souris, got full of liquor a few days ago. For so Sale he was remonstrated with by his father, to spite whom he went out to the stable and proceeded to brutally beat one of the horses therein with an axe, For thus exercising his muscles he was arraigned before Messrs. John McLean and Jrmea. R. McLean, J. P.'s, who sent him up for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court. He was taken to Georgetown jail by Sheritf McDonald on Saterday evering.

The grand total of goods entered for consumption was $8,465,000. October's exports from Canada totalled $10,841,000. The balance at credit of depositors in the P. O. Savings Banks at the end of October was $19,779,000.

KiLttp By Tie TrRatN.—The Scuris freight train, in charge of Conductor Mchie, on Sat- urday evening ran into and killed a horse at Heard’s Crossing, near the St. Peter’s Road. The animal was badly mutilated, and the timbers of the culvert into which the horse was thrown after being struck, were broken off at one end. The horse was evidently turn- ed out to graze for theznight, as there was no trace ofharness or halter about him. We have not heard the name of the owner. iiieppiandiies

A Fart Bapy.—There is on exhibition at 119 Granville Street, (opposite Kaisers) a New- foundland baby, 43 years old, 44 inches high, and weighing 150 lbs. She was a twin—the other died. This prodigy takes an interest in all childish affairs, toys, etc., and talks as any other child of her age. An ilea of her proportions may be gained from the fact of her ankle being 18 inches around. The par- ents are ordinary sized people-—the father weighs 167 Ibs. and the mother perhaps 120. . -Halifax Recorder.

Tae DaNceRovs SipewaLks.— Time and again we have called attention to the danger- ous condition of the sidewalks throughout the city, but as they continue inthe same state it would appear as if the authorities do not in- tend doing anything inthe way of giving citizens that accommodation to which they are entitled. The city, however, may have to foot up a bill one of these days, when some pedestrian sustains an injury through the defective and negligent state of the sidewalks, and then they will likely repairthem. The city of St. John, on Friday last, was mulcted in $2,000 damages, besides costs, for allowing the sidewalk of one of the streets of the city to get out of repair. The City Council here should profit by the St. John verdict.

Two Isuanpers Aproap.—On Wednesday night, says the T'ranscript, there arrived from Prince Edward Islands at a Moncton hotel two men named Ross and Cameron bound for Bangor, Me., where they intended to obtain work in the lumber shanties of the State. The men took a room together at the hotel and went to bed. They were slightly intoxicated at the time. During the night Ross got up unknown to the hotel clerk, left without set- tling his score, and took the night train for St John, ex route to Bangor, Me. Cameron when he came down in the morning, was sur- prised at Ross’ departure, and accused the lat- ter of having taken with him his (Cameron’s) purse, containing about thirty dollars, and a new fur cap, leaving his own old one behind. Cameron appeared much troubled over his loss. He was with Ross to have bought his ticket for Bangor, Me., here, but having no money he started on foot for Point du Chene to take the boat for the Island.

says the Star, that the Province of Quebes is at a stand still. Nonsense. Those who say so do not read as they run. Look at the railways that have been built for the last ten years, and look at the railways now commenced or in contemplation. ‘Chere is the Temiscouata, the St. Jerome, the Gatineau Valley, the St. Anne de Beaupre, and other lines al- ready decided on or under consideration, while the Hon. Mr. Mercier has promised torun aline that will connect St. John with the Ottawa Valley and tap the head waters of the St. Maurice, the North River, the Rouge, the North Nation, the Gatineau, and the Ottawa. This will be a great undertaking. If continued to Sud- bury cn the C. P. R., it may take a great deal of the carrying trade to Quebec, but in any case it will open what explorers describe as a fertile country that can support an in- mense population.

It has been remarked that the convert- ed Souix of the Indian Presbytery of Da- kota during the past ecclesiastical year gave

Archdeacon Farrar says that Cruik- shank, the artist, offered $500 for proof of a violent crime cominitted by a total ab- stainer from intoxicants, and the money re- mains unclaimed to-day. The Archdeacon says that he will give the same apwunt for proof of any one case, ‘‘either in the church or out of it, where drunkenness, has been cured without total abstinence.”

Limerick, Nov. 27.

An attempt made to-day to hold a de- monstration im honor of the Manchester martyrs was suppressed by the police. The unveiling of a statue to. commemorate the hanging of the nen was set down as a por- tion of the programme. Fearing inter- ference with the statue, a guard surrounded it during the night. Mr. McInerney, of New York, was chosen to preside and to address the people. The police then drew their batons and made an onslaught on the crowd. This was answered by stones. In the encounter many persons were hurt. Troopss now occupy the thoroughfares. To-night a crowd stoned and hooted the police who cleared the streets with batons and bayonets. They met with great resistance and many constables were injured. The wounded were convey- ed to the hospital. The police acted reck- lessly. The windows of hotels in the streets where the trouble occurred were tilled with onlookers. Many taunted the police who replied, throwing staffs and stones, and breaking a number of windows. Thirty persons wounds were dressed.

Attack on the Salvation Army. QueBeEc, Noy. 26.

The Salvation Army was attacked on Thursday night by an organized mob of 600 French-Canadians, many of whom were students of Laval University. They sang French songs, assaulted the Army and stormed the barracks. The feeling among French-Canadians over the attack on the Army is very strong. They claim if the authorities will not allow them to enjoy the saine privileges as the Salvation Army in parading the streets they will take the law into their own hands. Great fears are en- tertained as to the peace of the city, as the affair is «<lwindling down to race _pre- judices.

Mayor Langlier has written to the Salva- tion Army asking them not to parade the streets in a body until Wednesday next, when he will give them reinforced protec- tion. I[t is rumored to-day that a meeting is to be held to-morrow night for the pur- pose of organizing a mob to attack the Army and their protectors on Wednesday should they parade. revolvers were purchased yesterday pre- sumably for use last night.

Hanlan Again Beaten.

Sypney, N.S. W., Nov. 26. The boat race between Beach and Hanlan for the championship of the world took place to-day in the Nepeau River and was won by Beach. The race was an exciting one.
